Josh Giddey has had such a brilliant start to his NBA career that it’s hard to remember he’s still basically a kid with some bad mistakes in his game.

And on Tuesday (Australian time) the 20-year-old made a doozy of a blunder when he threw an inbound pass into his own backboard.

Giddey’s silky passing and incredible vision have put him right up with some of the best passers in the league.

But he’d desperately want this one back.

With his Oklahoma City Thunder up 64-58 over the Boston Celtics and just under two minutes left in the second quarter, Giddey had an inexplicable brain fart, throwing the ball straight into the backboard.

He tried to play it off, regathering the ball and passing it out, but the blunder had already taken place.

The commentators were equally stunned by what had transpired, calling it a “mental lapse”.

“A turnover you basically never see as Giddey hit the underside of the backboard trying to inbounds it,” the commentator said. “You could watch every game all season and not see that.”

It gave the Celtics in their own half. Mercifully, Jaylen Brown missed a three-point attempt and the Thunder were able to take a 69-62 lead into the break.

However, the Thunder couldn’t hold off the Celtics, who responded to post a 126-122 win.

But the pass had left many people stunned.

Last week, Forbes’ Nick Crain tweeted: “Josh Giddey is the best inbounder in the league. It’s not close.”

It was after a no-look inbound that found Luguentz Dort to send the match against the Milwaukee Bucks to overtime.

He even had a spectacular pass earlier in the match, finding Kenrich Williams in the corner for three.

Despite his classy touch, fans were quick to roast Giddey for the unusual moment.

It was a mixed night for Giddey, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists, but also seven turnovers.
