It has been an incredible four years for the Atherton Roosters, since the commencement of the women’s FNQ Rugby League, with memories that Teesha Potts will never forget.
The Roosters captain has hung up the boots following the clubs grand final defeat, looking to step into a coaching role.
Potts said it was time to rest the body.
“I have loved every bit of playing with the girls not just this year but over the past four years,” Potts said.
“I have played a lot of footy and I coached for the first time this year and I really enjoyed it.
“I would like to step up and continue that and give my body a little bit of a rest before I jump back into it for a few more seasons.
“I am very sore, I have been with the team from the get go, it has been a great for years but that is about it for me.
“I love the sport and want to be part of it but just in a less taxing way at the moment.
“I am very easily persuaded though, so I am sure the girls could entice me to play next year.
“But for now, my goal is to continue coaching the juniors or perhaps take the next step in coaching as well.”
The 18-year-old took her footy to the next level in 2024, debuting in her first Foley Shield side for Cairns while competing for Northern Pride’s Harvey Norman Under 19s.
Potts played all six games for the Pride this year, captaining the side in the round 5 draw with the Capras.
Before she became the Roosters halfback, Potts was a dominant player for Mareeba Bulls Football Club.
Potts reflected on the year and was happy knowing her side game it their all in 2024.
“I have lost grand finals before and it was definitely different this time around because even though we lost, the girls were definitely happy with their efforts,” Potts said.
“I kept reminding them to keep their heads high because we got that far and it was good to just make a grand final.
“I was telling myself all season that I don’t think I will be playing next year, so I wanted to go out this year and do as much as I could and the best that I can.
“I think I have definitely ticked that off my bucket list and getting to play rep, it opens up the competition to down south and shows us what is out there and available.
“So it gives you bigger opportunities to play bigger and better football.”
It was announced the Northern Pride will be looking at forming a team to enter the BMD competition in 2025 and will be chasing a coach.
“No I don’t think I would go that high to start with,” Potts joked.
“I think I will start from the bottom and work my way up but we will see where it takes me.”
