Where best to play rising Sun?

He’s one of the Suns’ great rising hopes but there remains doubt over where to best play him.

MEDIUM-SIZED Sun Callum Ah Chee has provided class at both forward and back, so where do Gold Coast plan to deploy him in 2019?

Ah Chee, 21, plied his trade as a junior as a forward and was drafted for his skills in front of goal in 2015 before showing he was equally adept coming off halfback under coach Stuart Dew last season.

UNCAPPED PAIR SET FOR AFL DEBUTS

Suns football manager Jon Haines said they remained open to using the 182cm talent in both positions this year but suggested the competition for spots in Gold Coast’s forward line and Ah Chee’s presence at the back in their JLT Series win over the Western Bulldogs and subsequent defeat to Sydney showed he would likely start the season there.

“The beauty of Callum is he can play multiple positions,” Haines said.

“He played the majority of his junior footy at forward and has shown he can play that role at AFL level and also at halfback.

“With his closing speed, kicking ability and competitive instincts he is certainly attractive in the back half.

FIVE THINGS WE LEARNT FROM SUNS

“We remain open about it to be honest.

“It will certainly be competitive in our forward line as we have many small or medium-sized players there so it if suits us better to have him at the back and suits him then we will look at that.

“Last week’s game against the Bulldogs probably gives you a line of sight in terms of our thinking.”

Ah Chee has been among the best for Gold Coast in their scratch match against Brisbane and JLT Series win over the Western Bulldogs and Haines said it hadn’t been missed by the football department.

“Callum is in a really good head space,” Haines said.

“He had a couple of interruptions in the preseason but he has done the bulk of it and is in a really good space off the field.”
