Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan isn’t sitting on the fence for tonight’s AFL grand final.

He has made a bold call by picking a team to support in the biggest game of the year.

Just hours before the first ball was bounced at Perth’s Optus Stadium, McGowan uploaded a selfie to Twitter of him on a packed train with several Melbourne supporters.

The WA Premier’s followers noticed a detail in the corner of the photo — he had a red and blue Demons scarf over his shoulders, making it clear where his allegiance lies.

“Incredible vibe on the train to the Stadium,” McGowan wrote on Twitter. “Grand Final fever is well and truly here!”

The decision to side with Melbourne instead of the Western Bulldogs is an intriguing one, given both grand finalists are Victorian teams.

The image attracted the attention of the Channel 7 commentators, who were surprised McGowan has decided to pick a side to support at all.

“He’s made a statement there, I did not expect that,” James Brayshaw said.

Abbey Holmes added: “That’s controversial.”

McGowan was also spotted posing for photos outside the stadium with his Demons scarf on full display.

Western Australia is hosting the Grand Final for the first time as a result of the AFL being forced to move the game from its traditional MCG venue for the second consecutive year as a result of the pandemic.

A capacity crowd of 60,000 has packed into Optus Stadium to make the most of the rare opportunity to witness the season’s final match.
