Gaven Johnston-Smith will this year take on the head coaching role for the QFAW Division One lady roos side with the current squad including his daughter Lexie and his wife Jamie.

Unnerved by the prospect of mentoring his loved ones, Johnston-Smith has instead embraced the challenge as he prepares to try and steer the 2019 preliminary finalists to the final game of the season.

“They have the ability to do that,” he said.

“It’s my goal to take them all the way this year.”

Johnston-Smith joins the Roos after spending the past few years developing youth talent at the Palm Beach Currumbin Lions, successfully steering the Under-14 boys to a premiership last year.

Johnston-Smith even played his final three years of football at the Roos in the 1990s but will this year aim to lead Robina to their maiden Division 1 decider just one season after joining the league on the back of Division 2 dominance.

“The girls have had two years under two different coaches so I’ve made a point of going back to basics and trying to get those fundamentals right,” he said.

“The culture at the club is really good at the moment.”

While Robina have lost a handful of players to opposition clubs, they have managed to recruit Kaycee Richards and Montana Williams from 2019 grand finalists Burleigh while Tamsin Perry has joined the Roos from Bond University.

“The girls we’ve lost, we’ve seemed to have replaced them with similar players which is a great start,” Johnston-Smith said.

Robina is hoping to field two sides, both in QFAW Division 1 and Division 2 with the season set to commence in April.
