A lifeless second half that nearly cost a QAFL powerhouse a win, the ‘Mayor of Moncrieff’ arrives to play alongside a future AFL star, a former Sun takes a mark of the year contender and a QFA team is giving their coach heart problems.

Plus, inaccurate kicking costs one team a Cup and will COVID-10 threaten the QFA Division 2 competition? We tackle all the big news coming out of the QAFL and Division 2 South competition from the weekend.

QAFL

POST-GAME sprays are rare for winning sides but Palm Beach Currumbin coach Jess Sinclair delivered an almighty one after a second half fade out nearly cost the Lions their second straight QAFL victory.

The Lions were up by 48 points over Sherwood at halftime on Saturday at Salk Oval, kicking 19 scoring shots to six. But the Magpies got within nine points by the final siren, Palm Beach sneaking away 12.11 (83) to 11.8 (74) winners.

“We were as good as I have ever seen in a first quarter and as bad as I have ever seen after halftime,” Sinclair said.

“We just stopped. They didn’t attack the game anymore and Sherwood deserved to win it.

“I could sense the mood at halftime that they thought the job was done. They seemed flat and lifeless. We dodged a bullet.

“It almost felt like a loss after the game and I did give them a spray about not getting complacent and ahead of themselves.”

VFL recruits Matt Gahan showed glimpses of their quality but Sinclair said both will improve after not playing in a long time.

The Col Bourke Cup sits at one-a-piece after reigning premiers Surfers Paradise Demons beat Labrador Tigers 14.2 (86) to 9.14 (68) at Cooke Murphy Oval.

Labrador had the breeze at theIr backs in the first quarter but were ultimately made to pay for inaccurate kicking after finishing the first term leading 3.7 (25) to 1.0 (6).

The Tigers managed to hold a two-point lead at halftime but the Demons superior form in front of goal proved the difference.

“We were all over them in the first quarter and things didn’t go our way,” Tigers coach Liam Burke said.

“We couldn’t convert. They were genuine chances from a few set shots and blokes were rushing, thinking they were under more pressure than they were.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Mayor of Moncrieff’ kicked six goals to guide Broadbeach to a 15.11 (101) to 6.8 (44) win over Mt Gravatt at Dittmer Park.

Jordan Moncrieff excelled on the back of an enormous work rate, leading the goalkicking count for the game while Alex Davies showed why he is the Gold Coast Suns leading draft prospect with a strong performance in the midfield.

“We were a bit rusty early on but we settled and got on top in the later stages of the first quarter,” Cats coach Craig O’Brien said.

“It felt like we got the cobwebs out after the bye in Round 1. We have some big bodies in the side this year who won’t be taking a step back.”

QFA Division 2 South

VERSATILE athlete Josh Hall has an early contender for mark of the year in the QFA Division 2 South competition.

Hall, a former Suns AFL player who spent time at NRL club Penrith Panthers, managed to leap on to the shoulders of Carrara’s ruckman before taking a mark with one hand in Burleigh’s 15.15 (105) to 10.5 (65) win over the Saints at Bill Godrefy Oval.

Hall went on to kick a goal from 65m out in a dominant display from the man who won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Youth Athletics Championships.

Further north Bond University escaped with a one point win over Kenmore in another gritty performance.

Edward Delany equalised with three minutes left before Bond University managed a behind in the dying seconds to secure the 7.11 (53) to 7.10 (52) win.

“We battled and it was an ugly win,” Bond University coach Sam Whish-Wilson said.

“Winning ugly is good but I hope we don’t do that every week. My heart doesn’t need that.”

Meanwhile Tweed Coast Tigers coach Hamish Mitchell is keeping a close eye on the Queensland-NSW border following his team’s 20.8 (128) 2.0 (12) win over the Lismore Swans at Oakes Oval on Saturday.

It was a dominant performance but Mitchell is aware of the threat COVID-19 poses for the competition that has teams on the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers.

One junior side couldn’t make the trip south from Queensland on Saturday because many players pulled out of the game due to the border crossing.

Tweed Coast has won four senior premierships in its 11 year history while playing in the Northern Rivers and gaining traction in the bigger QFA Division 2 South league is their priority.
