North Melbourne young gun Tarryn Thomas is caught up in a police investigation amid allegations of malicious behaviour to a former partner.

Thomas, 22, has found himself under scrutiny over a recent dispute with his ex-girlfriend.

The Herald Sun understands that he has been accused of several instances of intimidatory behaviour, including comments regarding personal photos and videos.

An AFL spokesman said the league’s integrity unit had been made aware of the matter.

A North Melbourne spokesperson said: “The club is aware of a current police investigation involving a player. The player is co-operating with police and the club has reported the matter to the AFL’s Integrity Unit.”

Thomas is on leave until pre-season training begins on December 5.

In a separate issue, it has emerged that Thomas’ car was impounded in July when he was checked at a booze bus site and found not to have a valid licence.

Police confirmed a 22-year-old man was found to have been driving on a suspended licence when the check was made on King St, West Melbourne.

The man was forced to pay $878.50 and his Mercedes-Benz CLA200 was confiscated for 30 days.

Thomas, drafted at pick eight in the 2018 AFL draft, is regarded as one of North’s most promising players.

He signed a two-year contract extension at the start of this year, but managed only 10 games in 2022 as he struggled following the loss of his grandmother.

“In Tarryn’s situation, he had some things going on in his life. It is a good reminder that sometimes what goes on in life is much more important than what happens in a footy club,” Alastair Clarkson said of Thomas after his appointment as coach in late August.

Earlier this month, he went public to deny talk that he wanted to leave Arden St and said he would be staying until the end of his contract in 2024.

His latest issues come as further bad news for the embattled Roos.

The club had been on a high after Clarkson’s appointment, but he stepped aside after the Hawthorn racism scandal broke last month.

Clarkson was due to commence in his role as Kangaroos coach on November 1, but the AFL-appointed, four-person panel tasked with investigating the issue has not yet begun its work, with the terms of reference for the probe still being finalised.

President Sonja Hood last week lamented: “Although we can’t comment on the allegations or the AFL’s process, it’s important to note that the way events have unfolded over the past fortnight has created damage for our club and our people – our players (Indigenous and non-Indigenous), our staff, our members, and of course Alastair himself.”

North’s teenage No.1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis was also last week traded to Port Adelaide after he decided he wanted out.

Horne-Francis took a swipe at the uncertainty surrounding the Kangaroos during his first media appearance with the Power, saying: “I wanted to make sure I was in a stable environment coming into next year.

“I think a lot of people know it might be another unstable year at North. We just thought to go back home to a great club like Port Adelaide would be best for me.”
