NORTH Melbourne veteran Brent Harvey didn’t need any reminding when he slotted through a goal late in the final quarter of Sunday’s nailbiting five-point win over Melbourne.
His sixth for the day was a career-best haul after 412 games and 20 years in the caper, and he said it was one statistic that he was already all over.
Not only for himself, but for the Roos as they looked to pile on as many points as possible with the Demons surging.
“I did know that (it was my record) — it’s about all I knew,” Harvey said after the game.
“I’ve already been reminded by a few of the boys.
“But it’s always good — it’s been a long time between drinks.
“I was pretty excited when I got my sixth, and it was a crucial time of the game as well. All of those goals in the last quarter were going to be beneficial for us.”
The 37-year-old admitted he “doesn’t like the close ones”, but said four points is all that matters, particularly when it’s been 11 years since the Kangaroos notched wins in the first three rounds of the season.
For as far as Harvey is concerned, he’d much rather be getting the credits in the bank now rather than having to pick up any slack closer to September.
“Similar to the first two weeks, we haven’t played fantastic footy, but we’re still winning, and that’s a huge bonus for us,” he said.
“In previous years we’ve won late games to make the finals, and you spend too many tickets doing that. It’s good winning the early games because you don’t have to make them up at the end of the season.”
