Sydney Swans AFLW signings: internet hit Brenna Tarrant, Jaide Anthony join

She was an over excited schoolgirl who became an internet hit when told she had been drafted to the AFLW. Now she’s heading home to join forces with the Sydney Swans.

Three years ago her squeals of excitement when picked in the draft were videoed by a mate and went viral.

Now Blue Mountains gun Brenna Tarrant is return home to the Swans for their first season in the AFLW with two seasons of the top women’s competition under her belt with the Melbourne Demons.

Tarrant, who started her Aussie rules career at the Glenmore Park club near Penrith and played with the East Coast Eagles in The Hills, said she and her family have always been Swans fans.

“My family and I have followed and supported the Swans for years now - I’ve never wanted anything more than this opportunity,” said Tarrant, who arrives at the club equipped with the invaluable experience of 12 matches for the Demons after being told she had been drafted to the AFLW while studying for a school exam back in 2019.

“I’ve been fortunate to have played AFLW over the past couple of years, including having finals experience, so I want to use that experience to help lift team and get us to a level where we can perform really well in our first season – and in the seasons to come.”

Coach Scott Gowans said her versatility is what appealed to him.

“Brenna is a very versatile player, she can play back, mid or forward, and we’ve really gone for her experience in that, playing through all three lines at AFLW level,” Gowans said.

“She’s come from a good program in Melbourne, and we believe she’s got some really good growth in her football that we can use.”

Also joining the Sydney Swans from the Dandenong Stingrays is 18-year-old utility player Jaide Anthony.

Other Sydney Swans signings are NSW athletes Alice Mitchell, Maddy Collier, Sarah Ford, Inner West Magpies midfielder Ella Heads and North Shore Bombers Zoe Hurrell, North Melbourne’s VFLW captain Molly Eastman, Hawthorn VFLW midfielders Lauren Szigeti and Aimee Whelan, track athlete Montana Beruldsen, former Carlton and GWS forward Rebecca Privitelli and Ruby Sargent-Wilson, the clubs first signing.
