With the preseason competition already half way through, Paige Cardona and Andrew Weaver have another look at where their Classic teams sit heading into the JLT Community Series Round 2.
Chatting on Slack, the duo compared the changes they have made to their sides, new players in common, those that were different, and what their one player they really want to see in JLT Series Round 2.
RAMPAIGE: 11 CHANGES
IN: Brodie Smith, Jordan Clark, Marty Hore, Chris Burgess, Tom Liberatore, Zak Butters, Charlie Constable, James Worpel, Will Setterfield, Willem Drew, Nick Parker.
OUT: Jake Lloyd, Isaac Quaynor, Callum Wilkie, Tim Sparrow, Nick Hind, Tom Atkins, Dayne Beams, Josh Dunkley, Tom Wilkinson, Jack Petruccelle, Ben Cavarra.
WON’T WIN: 11 CHANGES
IN: Zach Williams, Marty Hore, Jack Macrae, Brad Crouch, James Cousins, Charlie Constable, Brett Bewley, Zack Clarke, Archie Smith, Devon Smith, Willem Drew
OUT: Alex Witherden, Conor Rozee, Isaac Quaynor, Dayne Beams, Tom Rockliff, Xavier Duursma, Ian Hill, Tim English, Darcy Fort, Josh Dunkley, Matthew Ling
AW: The first thing that stands out for me is that you're sticking with the Grundy — Fort — Mumford plan. Which was my idea! Have I mentioned that? I don't think I have. It was my idea and I'm not running with it … yet.
PC: Yes Weaves, it was your idea. But is it REALLY your idea if you’re not even brave enough to roll with it? I mean in saying that, Fort is going to be on the express train out of my side if he doesn’t pull his finger out in JLT2. Zac Clarke is waiting in the wings for that R2 spot.
AW: After all that confidence that I had in my backline, all it took was one look at Zac Williams and he was straight into my side, and similarly watch Quaynor shank every kick put me right off him — better to go for Hore as he also brought the ball back into play on a couple of occasions. I'm still not certain he'll be there in Round 1 for the Dees, but we will know more soon you would expect.
PC: I see you’ve dumped the best SuperCoach ruckman in Grundy and gone for Todd Goldstein who beat up on a ruckless St Kilda outfit in JLT1. My only question is, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! I cannot take you seriously if you do not start Brodie Grundy. I’m also glad to see that one of us (that person being me) already had Williams in their SuperCoach team before JLT1. #faith

AW: I never had Grundy — I think Goldzilla will crush all comers, and Grundy is too pricey for me to back up his 2018 with similar numbers. I'll wait for his price to dip a bit before I try and get him in, if he comes close to last year's output. Is that a case of pot calling the kettle black? I note you didn't have Brodie Smith previously, and now he's D4 for you.
PC: Yeah look, we’re all mugs in this game. And Rory Laird said that Smith would take the kick-outs for the Crows and would proceed to play on at any opportunity, so with that, I have to include him. What selection headaches are you having at the moment? I’ve had Lloyd in and out of my side all week. I think i’m getting hotter for Worpel, but if that pest from GWS lights it up in JLT, then he’ll earn a spot in Worpel’s place.
AW: If Toby Greene showcases his wares this round coming up, he'll be straight into my forward line. Once again, it's really only the backline that I'm reasonably comfortable with at this point — I think there's better value than Lloyd available, and if he doesn't play on from his kick-ins, I definitely won't be going near him. I have had Dustin Martin in and out of my side a mountain of times this preseason already, and I still can't get him in, while Darcy Moore's relatively low score for high percentage of game time has me worried.
PC: You’re not wrong on Dusty. But I just can’t bare the thought of him completely destroying Carlton in Round 1 and spitting out a 130+ SuperCoach score to get my year off to a flyer. The backline is stacked with value this year. I’m contemplating going skinny up forward with just two premiums and the rest being $250,000 or less. I’d love to start all of Lloyd, Laird, Roberton, Williams and Smith. If not Lloyd, then Whitfield. But hey, let’s talk about the distinct lack of quality rookie DPPS this year, specifically in that MID/FWD position. It’s grim.
AW: Yes, there's not many immediately recognisable valuable DPP rookies, Setterfield aside, but the premiums are high quality performers — Dangerfield and Heeney are in both our sides, while I've also got Smith, and we've both had Dunkley in there too over the preseason journey so far. I think this is the first year I'm really not bothering with running a strong DPP strategy, but instead going for players in fixed positions who I think will play bigger roles for their sides — we've both got faith in Liberatore and Roberton, for example, to more than justify their circa $300k price points.
PC: It’s not a bad point you make. But flexibility wise, I don’t mind having that ability to switch and flex between positions. Willem Drew was quite impressive against the Crows who has MID / FWD eligibility. But here’s a big question for you … Michael Gibbons. Had a good score. But what are you going to do if he scores sub 70 against Collingwood in JLT2? There are so many impressive midfield rookies, and although Gibbons is cheap, I don’t think i’ll start him if there are better averages out there from both JLT games.
AW: I think the thing with Gibbons is that he SHOULD be a starting midfielder in the Carlton set up, but it appeared in the JLT Series win over Essendon that he was more fulfilling the Matty Wright role of the smaller pressure forward. If he doesn't move through the midfield more in JLT2, I can't see me having faith in him, in which case I'd be keen on Zak Butters, potentially, or shuffling things around a bit to get Parker from the Saints in there.
PC: Good point on his position, I think that’s going to be something SuperCoaches will have to be wary of. There’s a raft of mature-age players putting their hands up. I mean, the two suns boys Burgess and Collins looked bloody good in those conditions. Imagine them on a dry day!

ONE PLAYER YOU WANT TO SEE IN JLT SERIES ROUND 2
AW: I can’t wait to see what Toby Greene does. To be honest, even if he just ‘gets through’ I may very well be tempted to add him straight in — he’s a star of a player, and is at ‘fallen premium’ price at this point in time. He's simply too good a player to reject at that sweet, sweet sub-$360k price point and a Round 1 Break Even of just 64 SuperCoach points.
PC: If Tim Taranto can back up that monster JLT1 effort in JLT2 against the Crows with Josh Kelly back in the team, well then I’m going to start him. He is so good and looks to be the major beneficiary of Dylan Shiel’s departure.
