Round 11 feels like a decisive week of trading in SuperCoach.
Do you grab a value premium knowing they’ll have a bye coming up?
Or, are you willing to take the risk and bring Zac Fisher back after a big three weeks?
These are among the questions our SuperCoach experts are asking themselves as they lock in their trades.
But at least there’s one move they are almost all settled on.
Scroll down to see what each of the experts have planned.
AL PATON
IN: Joe Richards, Zac Fisher
OUT: Hugo Garcia, Colby McKercher
Trading McKercher back in looked like a genius move until his foot injury flared up. I expect North to give him plenty of time to recover and with byes around the corner I’m using a third trade on him this year.
Fisher is playing McKercher’s role, which we know is a free pass to SuperCoach points especially now Harry Sheezel is a full time midfielder. I will bring Zac into my defence but the plan is for him to use his DPP to get him to the other end of the ground, where there is a chance he could be a top-eight forward from here.
Picking another Collingwood cheapie makes me nervous but Richards has looked great in his first two games; if he and Lachie Sullivan can survive until the Pies’ round 15 bye it will be a huge win.
I have had Nic Martin on my radar for a few weeks but he slips through again, he’s going to be a tough watch against the Tigers.
THE PHANTOM
OUT: Darcy Wilson, Riley Garcia
IN: Clayton Oliver, Joe Richards
With Dayne Zorko taking priority last week — for good reason — I waited on Clayton Oliver . But after what we saw over in Perth, I’m more than happy to jump on at $524k to finish my midfield. A bit early to chop Riley Garcia? Maybe, but he did get Bevo’d out of the game last week. If the premo is in reach, take it. That also rings true with Darcy Wilson, who’s had a standout debut season. I’m only trading him over Sam Darcy due to the breakeven — I’m not expecting another big score from either this weekend.
TIM MICHELL
IN: Zac Fisher and Joel Freijah
OUT: Bigoa Nyuon and Will Graham
Or...
IN: Jordan Dawson and Joel Freijah
OUT: Sam Clohesy and Will Graham
Am I completely sold on Fisher? Absolutely not. But watching him roam around the backline without an opponent against Essendon and rack up 30 easy disposals and 116 points was sickening. He’s $440k which is value for a player in such a dominant SuperCoach role. I don’t like that he doesn’t tackle or mark often so relies largely on kicks, but it probably doesn’t matter in the North backline. It’s an issue he has a bye in round 12 but in all likelihood I wouldn’t be interested if he’s $480k come round 13. I’ll shift Sam Clohesy instead of Graham should Graham be named this week to try and maximise their money-making. At risk of sounding like Marge Simpson holding a potato, I just think Joel Freijah is neat. He plays halfback, uses the footy well enough and Bevo seems to like him. Two 60s in rounds 12 and 13 might even make my best 18. I’m scared about not having Dawson against West Coast but based on break evens, Fisher is likely the best option this week. Maybe I’ll toss a coin and decide on Friday.
PATCH
IN: Matt Rowell, Joel Freijah
OUT: Colby McKercher, Will Graham
The last time I tried a dinky or clever way to make cash (Colby McKercher) it all came crashing down in a hurry so I’m hesitant on both of them, and as President of the United States George W Bush once said, “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, can’t... can’t be fooled again”. So, that means no Fisher and no Sexton for Patch this week. We’re doing a vanilla downgrade and a vanilla upgrade, albeit it to someone I really wanted at the start of the season but was put off picking due to the bye. Although that said, Fish is *very* cheap. And his role is *very* lucrative. No, I couldn’t. Unless...? No, I’m being silly. Well, maybe. Who am I to refuse the siren cool of being fooled again? Fisher would also give me 200k to splash next week? That sounds fun! But the looming bye means I don’t know who I’d be splashing it on. I’ll probably end up a fool no matter what I do.
DAN BATTEN
IN: Dan Houston and Joel Freijah
OUT: Darcy Wilson and Riley Garcia
Alex Sexton or Sam Flanders/Dayne Zorko? That was where my mind was at earlier in the week. Then after assessing my byes and the find from Tim Michell of Zorko not being able to walk after a game due to soreness, I think Houston may be the solution. I do have four Dockers and Zak Butters as it is, but I should still be able comfortably field 18 in Round 13 and another R14 bye player (Sexton or Flanders) will throw things out of whack. Houston is at a tempting price of $570k with a favourable match-up against North Melbourne at Blundstone, where long bombs down the line are generally the order of the day. I will then plan to grab Zorko fresh off his bye in a fortnight.
CHLOE WILLIAMS
IN: Joe Richards, Coen Livingstone (vomit emoji)
OUT: Darcy Jones, Sam Naismith
This is so boring. I wanted Fisher, but with one downgrade and an attempted upgrade from Williams, I fall just short. So, two downgrades it is. I want to make sure I’ve got a playing rookie in Richards ready for the byes, and Naismith to Livingstone is a very minor cash grab now that all hopes of any more Cray sightings have been dashed. In the meantime, I’ll keep playing Tetris to try to fit Fisher in ... while regretting ever trading him out.
DOS (PHANTOM JR)
OUT: Will Graham, Marcus Windhager
IN: Alex Sexton, Zac Fisher
Izak Rankine is out. Should I trade? Almost certainly. Am I going to? NO. I’m living by the two words that have earned me the title of Phantom Junior and current number one ranked coach on The Phantom’s Lair podcast…
“Upgrade Cadence”.
I’m refusing to trade any top-line premium (whether injured or out-of-form), and Rankine – a likely top-six forward – is no different. My cadence journey continues this week as I bid farewell to a cash cow and a failed POD to play the breakeven game.
