SuperCoach AFL 2024: Biggest winners and losers from round 20

Harry Sheezel or Nick Daicos? Both dominated in round 20 and there were a lot of other huge scores – but one player has the rare distinction of scoring 0 points two weeks in a row.

Who would you take in a SuperCoach keeper draft today – Harry or Nick Daicos?

Daicos produced the best first two seasons from a player in recent memory, averaging 91 and 116 in SuperCoach, then Sheezel came right along and matched him – averaging 99.5 and 118. Has he gone past the Magpies superstar?

The pair started round 20 in second and third spot on the season rankings for SuperCoach defenders, but both leapfrogged Luke Ryan with huge games.

Sheezel now holds the title, leading Daicos by 24 points for the season with four rounds to go. Can he hold on?

They were just two of the stars to go big in round 20, but there were some failures as well. Check out all the hits and misses below.

WINNERS

HARRY SHEEZEL – 160 POINTS

The Kangaroos’ boom youngster had a day out against the Cats with 36 disposals (29 on target), 25 contested possessions, nine clearances, five tackles and a goal.

TRISTAN XERRI – 151 POINTS

Rucking against youngster Shannon Neale, Xerri took full advantage with a career-high 25 disposals to go with eight tackles and a massive 54 hitouts.

NICK DAICOS – 147 POINTS

Daicos looked like he could break all kinds of records when he had 18 disposals to his name at quarter-time, but he slowed down a little after that with some attention from Liam Baker and young Tiger Seth Campbell to only finish with 42.

TOM STEWART – 139 POINTS

The Cats veteran has been building since his move to a new centre square role six weeks ago, and he played like a dominant midfielder on Saturday – 32 disposals, 18 contested possessions and nine marks. We could have got him for $460k after Geelong’s bye – since then he’s averaged 114 points per game.

JACK STEELE – 136 POINTS

Steele has many terrific attributes in his game but goalkicking hasn’t been one of them – until Saturday. After booting three goals in the first 19 rounds, he snagged three in quick time against the Bombers to go with 21 disposals and five tackles.

CHARLIE CURNOW – 119 POINTS

Coaches who traded in Curnow after Carlton’s bye were celebrating after round 15 (118 points v Geelong) and cursing after rounds 16 and 17 (54 and 33 points against Richmond and GWS). Things have been looking up in the past three weeks as he builds each week with scores of 89, 106 and 119. What can he produce against the Pies next week?

HAYDEN YOUNG – 117 POINTS

A popular pre-season pick, it has taken Young a while to get going. But he has been in brilliant form since the Dockers’ bye including four 100-plus scores in the past month. Twelve tackles and seven score involvements helped him boost his tally in the derby.

SCOTT PENDLEBURY – 115 POINTS

The Pies champ was subbed off at three quarter-time to keep him fresh for game 400 next week but it was still a vintage Pendlebury display. He kicked the first goal of the game and logged 22 disposals at 91 per cent efficiency.

OLIVER DEMPSEY – 108 POINTS

He seems to have the Rising Star Award in the bag, and Dempsey has a good case as one of the SuperCoach rookies of the season. Three goals and five tackles against the Roos delivered a third ton of the season.

JY SIMPKIN – 99 POINTS

The Roos veteran has been a revelation for coaches who snapped him up for the bargain price of $343k seven weeks ago. Since returning to the side in round 13 he has averaged 97 points a game which has got plenty out of jail at F6.

MATT ROWELL – 97 POINTS

It’s been a rough couple of months for Rowell owners and while he didn’t quite manage his first 100-plus score in eight weeks, he came very close after jagging a goal to go with 21 touches and six tackles.

LOSERS

LUKE RYAN – 75 POINTS

Eight disposals in the final term helped Ryan pass his lowest tally for the season, but being forced to take more responsibility down back has delivered a bit hit to his SuperCoach output. Sheezel and Daicos have now both gone past him as the topscoring defenders of 2024.

CONNOR ROZEE – 73 POINTS

Rozee has been a great value buy for the 30,000 coaches who have traded him in over the past four weeks but this was his first score under 100 since round 14. A disposal efficiency of 62 per cent didn’t help the Port Adelaide skipper.

MASSIMO D’AMBROSIO – 57 POINTS

D’Ambrosio had one point to his name midway through the second quarter before he got going, but finished with just 11 disposals and five tackles. After an incredibly consistent run of seven scores in a row between 90 and 107, he has gone 30, 106, 57 in his past three.

TIM TARANTO – 48 POINTS

Usually one of the most reliable players in SuperCoach, Taranto didn’t look right all day and was eventually subbed out in the third quarter with a back complaint with just 11 disposals to his name.

CHAD WARNER – 39 POINTS

It’s not often Corey Warner gets bragging rights over his older brother at the family dinner table. But the seven-gamer outscored his big-name teammate with 58 SuperCoach points, while Chad could manage only 39 – second-lowest for Sydney behind injured defender Lewis Melican – after just 11 touches against the Dogs.

JORDAN RIDLEY – 33 POINTS

Disaster for his owners when the Bombers defender was subbed out with a hip injury. And to make matters worse, he’s already been ruled out of next week’s clash against Fremantle.

JACK BILLINGS – 28 POINTS

It feels an eternity ago that Billings was a popular trade target after scoring 119 points against the Bulldogs in round 1. He has spent time as the sub and in the VFL since then, and played a full game on Saturday night for 12 disposals and three clangers.

AARON CADMAN – 3 POINTS

Full-forward can be a tough position especially for young players but you would hope for more than two kicks in 78 minutes of game time. Cadman did manage to give away a free kick, though.

DAVID CUNINGHAM – 0 POINTS

Cuningham has the rare – possibly unique – distinction of back-to-back zeros in SuperCoach. Last week he was the sub and never got on the ground, then on Friday night he was subbed off injured just seven minutes into the first quarter before he had touched the footy.
