Champion Data has made its annual pre-season delivery to KFC SuperCoach AFL players – and this year there are some gift-wrapped surprises and some big lumps of coal.

After poring over vision of AFL and lower-level matches the gurus behind the stats that power KFC SuperCoach have assigned every player a position for the game in 2022.

And there are some big moves that will impact KFC SuperCoach plans.

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL THE KEY 2022 POSITION CHANGES

Some of the most popular picks in 2021 have lost dual-position status, including Patrick Dangerfield, Dayne Zorko and Rory Laird – who are all now pure midfielders – and Saint Rowan Marshall, who can only be picked in the ruck.

Meanwhile, star forward selections last season in Aaron Hall, Jack Ziebell and Jarman Impey are now classified is defenders – no surprise to anyone who watched the Kangaroos or Hawks in 2021. Callum Mills has also moved from DEF only to MID only after making his long-awaited move into the Swans centre square.

But it’s not all bad news.

The list of players to have gained dual-position status – by playing at least 35 per cent of game time in a particular spot on the field – includes Cat Mitch Duncan (MID/FWD), Bulldog Adam Treloar (MID/FWD), Carlton recruit George Hewett (DEF/MID), Essendon matchwinner Jake Stringer (FWD/MID) and Giant Lachie Whitfield (DEF/MID).

Duncan spent 40 per cent of his 10 matches playing as a forward in 2021, earning DPP status. That was his fewest number of appearances in six seasons and his KFC SuperCoach average of 99.2 was his first time under 100 since 2016. Put him on your summer watch list!

The Giants have delivered one of the most flexible KFC SuperCoach line-ups for 2022 with Stephen Coniglio and Tim Taranto both listed as MID/FWDs, along with Jake Riccardi. We even have a DPP tagger in Matt de Boer (MID/FWD).

North Melbourne also has a fresh MID/FWD trio in Jed Anderson, Tarryn Thomas and Tom Powell, but draft watchers might be disappointed to discover No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis is a MID only.

One player some KFC SuperCoach players were hoping might earn DPP status was Nat Fyfe, who spent plenty of time in front of goal early in the season. Unfortunately, he spent his last eight games playing in the guts, resulting in a season-long split of 79 per cent midfield, 21 per cent forward – well short of the DPP threshold.

One player who just got over the line was exciting Demon Luke Jackson, who spent 64.3 per cent of the season playing as a forward and 35.7 per cent in the ruck.
