CARLTON v RICHMOND

BLUES

There are plenty of points – and value – at the Blues in 2022 if they can keep up this kind of form. Patrick Cripps carried his red-hot pre-season form into Round 1 with a dominant display, and he could be the midfield buy of the year after starting at $454,800. He was supported by recruits George Hewett and Adam Cerra, while Sam Docherty wound back the clock and almost hit 100 points by halftime. The Blues didn’t just deliver at the top end – Mitch McGovern took some great intercept marks in his new role down back and forward rookie Corey Durdin was very lively and will make plenty of cash if he can keep scoring in the 70s.

TIGERS

Jayden Short, Dustin Martin and Josh Gibcus are the three most selected Richmond players in KFC SuperCoach and they were about the only shining lights on a tough Thursday night for the Tigers. Short racked up plenty of kick-ins early and although his scoring dried up as the Blues’ fine-tuned their goalkicking radar, he still top-scored for his team, just ahead of a fast-finishing Martin. Gibcus took a while to find his feet but showed plenty and should improve on his 56-point return. Mid-pricer Shai Bolton (three goals, 101 points) also deserves a mention.

MELBOURNE v WESTERN BULLDOGS

DEMONS

Christian Petracca picked up right where he left off in the grand final, putting up a huge Round 1 score – well played to the 17,000 players (12 per cent) who picked him in their team. Clayton Oliver and Max Gawn weren’t helped by the free kick count – Oliver gave away seven and Gawn six, sending their scores backwards. Gawn has remarkably failed to top 100 points in his past four Round 1 matches despite averaging over 120 points a game since 2018.

BULLDOGS

The usual suspects got it done for the Dogs with Jack Macrae (133) and Josh Dunkley (117) both solid captaincy choices. Bailey Smith topped them both and the biggest surprise was Tim English, who outplayed Gawn on his way to 123 points – he could be a very astute selection with RUC/FWD eligibility. Bailey Dale and Caleb Daniel offered great value as defenders.
