GWS GIANTS

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Toby Greene ($354,600, Fwd)

Take on trust. An interrupted pre-season is far from ideal preparation for the firebrand forward but Greene – at his best and fittest – must be considered.

Jye Caldwell ($162,300, Mid)

The Giants’ No.1 draft pick is sure to get his AFL chance early. After an injury-interrupted under-18s season, Caldwell looms as the key replacement after the Giants lost Dylan Shiel, Ryan Griffen and Tom Scully in the off-season.

Shane Mumford ($320,200, Ruck)

Can Mummy return to the bullocking big man we know and love? After a year out of the game all eyes will be on Mumford, and at 320k, he’ll be a bargain if he can reproduce his SuperCoach best, having averaged 90-plus for eight straight years between 2010 and 2017.

HAWTHORN

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Chad Wingard ($481,100, Mid-Fwd)

Take on trust I. If anyone can get the best out of two-time All-Australian Wingard consistently it is Hawthorn premiership mastermind Alastair Clarkson.

Tom Scully ($334,900, Mid)

Take on trust II. The ex-GWS Giants wingman averaged 88 and 97 before breaking down last season with a serious ankle injury. Monitor closely despite no official timeline set for his return.

James Sicily ($570,400, Def)

A breakout season for the young swingman that came to a premature end due to injury. Can Sicily back it up in 2019? If he remains in the intercepting/playmaking defender role, lock him in.

MELBOURNE

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Clayton Oliver ($622,600, Mid)

The apprenticeship is over for the 21-year-old bull after averaging 71, 111 and 114 the past three seasons. Has the tools and the team to break through the 120-point barrier this season.

Michael Hibberd ($398,700, Def)

You’ll be understandably cautious when it comes to the rebounding defender after a role change in 2018. However, the return of Jake Lever and addition of Steven May will hopefully see the playmaking weapon return to SuperCoach stardom.

Max Gawn ($692,100, Ruck)

The best genuine ruckman in the game? Yes. Brodie Grundy has Gawn covered around the ground but at stoppages there is none better than the 27-year-old, fresh off a career-high 127.5 average.

NORTH MELBOURNE

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Tarryn Thomas ($175,800, Mid)

One of the most talented prospects in the draft, the Tasmanian has all the tools to make an impact in 2019. He wins the ball in the middle but is also strong overhead and kicks goals when pushing forward.

Aaron Hall ($389,200, Mid)

A new lease on life at Arden Street could bring the best out of the ex-Gold Coast speedster. Likely to start forward at the Kangaroos and rotate with Shaun Higgins through the midfield.

Jared Polec ($513,500, Mid)

The former Power midfielder had a career-best year in 2018, averaging 94 points. However, can he replicate that at the Kangaroos? He’ll certainly have plenty of opportunity with few outside players to steal possessions.

PORT ADELAIDE

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Robbie Gray $525,500 (Mid-Fwd)

After two disappointing (from a SuperCoach perspective) seasons, is 2019 the year of Gray’s return to must-have status. After sharing midfield-forward time with Chad Wingard, Gray could move back to a full-time midfield role this year. It would be music to our ears.

Tom Rockliff ($405,900, Mid)

Has the SuperCoach legend become a SuperCoach burnman? In his first season with the Power, Rockliff logged his lowest average since his debut season in 2009 when he played just one game. If you’re still a believer he’s a bargain.

Connor Rozee ($189,300, Def-Fwd)

The No.4 draft picks looms as the immediate replacement for Chad Wingard in the Hawthorn forward line. The exciting youngster is expected to debut in Round 1 and while he’s expensive shouldn’t lack for opportunity.
