Missing rookies Chris Burgess, Will Setterfield and Jordan Clark can still help your SuperCoach score

Popular SuperCoach rookie Chris Burgess won’t be in Gold Coast’s Round 6 team, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have value for your SuperCoach side. Here’s how a rookie being dropped can help boost your score.

Rookie omissions can give us some major SuperCoach headaches.

Cat Charlie Constable hurt plenty of SuperCoaches last week when he was unexpectedly “managed” by coach Chris Scott. Now, it is teammate and fellow cash cow Jordan Clark who is in the same boat, rested for Geelong’s Round 6 clash against the Eagles.

THE PHANTOM: TOP CAPTAIN PICKS FOR ROUND 6

He isn’t the only rookie out of action, with young Roo Bailey Scott (in 46 per cent of teams) and mature-age Sun Chris Burgess (33 per cent) both dropped after a disappointing fortnight.

If they are in your team, it’s not all doom and gloom thanks to a nifty SuperCoach trick that can give you a scoring edge this weekend.

While not playing it stifles their cash generation (or in Burgess’s case, cash depreciation), it gives us the chance to use these non-playing rookies to our advantage via the emergency loophole.

This tool allows us to get two bites of the cherry — in essence, enabling us to choose between two rookies for our on field score.

It can add vital points to our tally, sometimes adding an extra 50 to our overall total.

For instance, those who used the emergency loophole on West Coast livewire Jack Petruccelle last week (with the help of suspended Blue Will Setterfield) were able to take his 100 SuperCoach points over Matthew Parker’s score, a modest 51.

This week, SuperCoaches with Bailey Scott who also traded in ball-winning Tiger Jack Ross and stuck the ‘E’ on him were able to benefit from his 89-point score.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get any more use out of the omitted Kangaroo, as North Melbourne faces the Power on Friday night.

But let’s look at how this can work with Geelong’s Jordan Clark, with Geelong playing the final game on Sunday afternoon — the perfect loophole timeslot.

LOOPHOLING CLARK

Many of the popular cheap SuperCoach defenders — Sam Collins, Jack Scrimshaw and Xavier Duursma — feature in games before Geelong’s match on Sunday.

The best player out of this bunch to focus on is Collins. After scoring a dismal 45 points last week, we can’t rely on him to produce a solid rookie total.

However, the mature-age defender has also notched some impressive scores, scoring 79 points or more on three occasions this season.

You can hedge your bets by simply plonking Collins on your bench. Nominate him as an emergency, and put Clark on the field.

If Collins has another stinker, sub Clark off for whichever playing defender is sitting on your bench. This will ensure you don’t have Collins’ score as one of your 22.

In the event that the 24-year-old has a day out and scores 80-plus points, keep Clark on the field to allow you to get Collins’ score (as emergency cover for his zero).

This way you get two chances to be able to get a solid rookie total as one of your on-field scorers.

LOOPHOLING BURGESS (playing Saturday 1.45pm)

SuperCoaches with Burgess in their side as a defender will only be able to use this tool with Xavier Duursma, who plays on Friday night against North Melbourne.

If Duursma scores a fruitful total, keep Clark on your field. This will allow you to nab his score over another rookie defender.

But if Duursma falls below 60 SuperCoach points — which he is yet to do this season — it might be worth considering playing your other cash cow defender over him.

If you have Burgess as a forward, Power draftee Connor Rozee is the sole forward that can be loopholed with Burgess.

LOOPHOLING WILL SETTERFIELD (playing Sunday 3.20pm)

Many SuperCoach players have the trio of Setterfield, Matt Parker and Jack Petruccelle.

With Setterfield sitting out another game with suspension, you can get the pick of the other two rookie scores by putting the E on Parker and seeing how he goes against Adelaide on Saturday.

If Parker scores well, leave Setterfield on the field and you’ll get the Saint’s score.

If he’s underwhelming, take Setterfield off and put Petruccelle on the field before the Blues play on Sunday.

Petruccelle scored 100 last weekend but if Parker manages anything over 70, it’s sensible to put that in the bank considering the Eagles play at GMHBA Stadium.

LOOPHOLING PATRICK BINES (playing Sunday 4.40pm)

While Bines is unlikely to play a game this season, he may be one of the most vital players in our SuperCoach sides. For those who swung Bines into the forward line when trading in Reilly O’Brien last week, any forward rookie can be emergency loopholed with him.

Any player besides Jack Petruccelle that is, who plays in the final game on Sunday afternoon.
