ADELAIDE
Premium: Jordan Dawson $647,600 MID — The Crows skipper graduated to the midfield last year and combined contested-ball winning with his elite kicking, a perfect formula for SuperCoach. He averaged 115.9 in his first full campaign as an on-baller.
Mid-pricer: Matt Crouch $490,800 MID — His career as a Crow looked over with a few months left of 2023 before he won his spot back in round 19. Crouch averaged 108 in the last six rounds of the campaign.
Rookie: Daniel Curtin $175,800 DEF-MID — The No. 8 draftee should slot straight in across halfback for the Crows, adding height to an injury-hit defence. The Champion Data boffins will love his intercept prowess.
BRISBANE LIONS
Premium: Josh Dunkley $644,000 MID — Took his premium numbers to Brisbane with him, producing his best SuperCoach average since 2019. Amazing what happens when you play a gun midfielder as a full-time mid.
Mid-pricer: Keidean Coleman $398,800 DEF — One of the standout mid-price prospects of the year. Scored 127 SuperCoach points in both the preliminary and grand finals. Will take over as the general in defence after Daniel Rich’s retirement.
Rookie: Kai Lohmann $150,900 FWD — There was a bit of chat about Lohmann joining a Victorian club during last year’s trade period, although it never materialised. He’s an exciting talent who was a top-20 pick only a few years ago.
CARLTON
Premium: Sam Walsh $576,800 MID — Priced at 103 after going 117 and 111 in the two years before an injury-affected 2023 season. Walsh can rack up disposals — and SuperCoach points — in a flash.
Mid-pricer: Zac Williams $216,100 DEF — The dashing defender has played 34 games in the past four years due to a wretched injury run. Looms as the bargain of the season if he can stay on the park.
Rookie: Jaxon Binns — $123,900 MID — Carlton is suddenly a hard team to crack in to but Binns is the most-likely of the rookie-priced Blues. He impressed in the VFL last year but is behind Blake Acres and Ollie Hollands in the queue for a wing spot.
COLLINGWOOD
Premium: Nick Daicos $650,000 DEF-MID — Would have won the Brownlow Medal last year had he not been injured with three games to go. The only silver lining for SuperCoaches is that Daicos kept DPP status. Scored 123 points or more in 12 of 20 matches.
Mid-pricer: Ash Johnson $277,900 FWD — Never a prolific scorer, averaging 49.7 points from 15 games in 2023. But someone needs to stand up in the absence of Daniel McStay and some Pies fans are bullish about it being Johnson. He should certainly average above 50 with greater opportunities.
Rookie: Finlay Macrae $152,600 FWD — Surely the time is now for the brother of SuperCoach hall of famer Jack Macrae. Taylor Adams’ move to Sydney should open up the midfield opportunities Macrae has been fighting for in the VFL.
ESSENDON
Premium: Zach Merrett $650,100 MID — The Bombers skipper has averaged at least 112 for the past four seasons in SuperCoach, a record which sits comfortably among the best midfielders. He averaged 123.4 from round 10 onwards.
Mid-pricer: Nik Cox DEF-MID $234,700 — Not a great crop of mid-pricers at Tullamarine, but if Cox or Elijah Tsatas ($245,900) can become senior regulars they have money-making potential.
Rookie: Nate Caddy $166,800 FWD — The talk out of Essendon is that Caddy has made a big impression in his first pre-season as he looks to add another dimension to the Bombers’ forward line. Scored 72 points in one VFL appearance for Carlton and averaged 107 in his draft year for Northern Knights.
FREMANTLE
Premium: Caleb Serong $621,600 MID — The Dockers are a popular team with SuperCoaches as they avoid the early bye caused by opening round. No Docker averaged more points a game than Serong last year as he scored tons in 16 out of 22 games.
Mid-pricer: Heath Chapman $251,700 DEF — The talented Docker was restricted to three matches last season by a long-term hamstring issue and shoulder dislocation. Chapman has been earmarked for the wing role left vacant by Liam Henry and averaged 75 only two years ago. He just needs to get his body right.
Rookie: Jeremy Sharp $123,900 MID — No guarantees to make the round 1 side, but the former Gold Coast Sun should be a contender for a wing role. He averaged 65.4 from nine games in 2021 but has only featured 12 times since. Averaged 84 ranking points in the VFL last year.
GOLD COAST
Premium: Noah Anderson $586,300 MID — Anderson graduated into the elite scoring bracket last year, averaging 104.9 to rank 23rd among midfielders in SuperCoach. In round 8 against Melbourne he had 37 disposals, six tackles, 10 clearances and scored 189 points.
Mid-pricer: Sam Flanders $494,200 FWD-MID — Flanders blossomed in the last 10 rounds of 2023, moving into a full-time midfield role and averaging 107.1 points.
Rookie: Jake Rogers $148,800 MID — Compared to Suns co-captain Touk Miller, Rogers averaged 134 points in the Coates League and 108 points at the Under-18 National Championships. He’s built to be ready for round 1.
GEELONG
Premium: Tom Stewart $635,300 DEF — One of the most consistent defenders in SuperCoach history, Stewart has averaged 107.6, 109.7 and 113.7 in the past three seasons. Rarely drops below 90 points and went as high as 167 points in 2023.
Mid-pricer: Cameron Guthrie $420,800 MID — The experienced midfielder was restricted to six games in 2023 by a toe injury which required surgery. Guthrie averaged 113.3 points in 2021 and 99.2 in 2022 but is priced to average in the 80s.
Rookie: Jhye Clark $123,900 MID — The No. 8 draft pick from 2022, Clark featured once last season as sub. His debut campaign was eventually cut short by a stress reaction in his foot.
GWS GIANTS
Premium: Kieren Briggs $608,800 RUC — One of the breakout SuperCoach stars of 2023, Briggs averaged 108.9 points in 14 games as GWS’ No. 1 ruckman. He posted 10.6 contested possessions (ranked elite) and 6.5 clearances (elite).
Mid-pricer: Harry Himmelberg $450,400 DEF — Giants coach Adam Kingsley settled Himmelberg in defence in the second half of 2023 and he averaged 94.5 SuperCoach points in the final 12 rounds of the season. Himmelberg has lost FWD status but remains at an affordable price.
Rookie: James Leake $135,300 DEF — The Tasmanian, who was drafted at pick No. 17 in last year’s draft, averaged 108 ranking points and 5.6 intercept possessions in the Coates League last year. He plays a SuperCoach-friendly game.
HAWTHORN
Premium: James Sicily $637,400 DEF — The second-most expensive defender of 2024 behind Nick Daicos, but worth every dollar. Has averaged 113.5 and 114.1 in the last two seasons, ranking elite for metres gained and intercepts in 2023.
Mid-pricer: Josh Weddle $373,800 DEF — Vindicated Hawthorn’s faith for trading up in the 2022 draft with a stellar debut campaign which included a ton in his fourth match. Track watchers at Waverley are excited and there’s talk of him pushing onto a wing.
Rookie: Nick Watson $189,300 FWD-MID — The young gun known as ‘The Wizard’ is much more than a small forward, averaging 20 disposals, 8.2 contested possessions and 108 ranking points in the Coates League last season.
MELBOURNE
Premium: Christian Petracca $667,700 MID — The Demons star has now averaged 111 points or more in the past four seasons and posted a career-best 119.5 despite spending about 30 per cent of game time forward. His three games under 100 were 95, 97 and 97.
Mid-pricer: Jack Billings $243,900 FWD — Job security and injury history are the only real issues with starting Billings in SuperCoach. He has only averaged less than 75 points twice since 2015 and that’s a steal at his starting price. Now, it’s over to Simon Goodwin and the Demons’ selection panel.
Rookie: Marty Hore $123,900 DEF — Returns to the AFL ranks five years after he was one of the best SuperCoach cheapies of 2019. Hore averaged 70.6 points in 14 games that year. He has averaged 116 and 122 ranking points in the last two VFL campaigns for Williamstown.
NORTH MELBOURNE
Premium: Luke Davies-Uniacke $635,100 MID — Had it not been for several injury issues, LDU would likely have been one of the topscoring SuperCoach midfielders of 2023. Eight of his 14 matches resulted in scores of 122 points or more.
Mid-pricer: Jy Simpkin $443,400 MID — Simpkin’s best SuperCoach seasons were scores of 97.2, 93 and 90.9, well below the top echelon of on-ballers. There’s no doubt he’s underpriced for his potential output, but how regular will his midfield time be in Alastair Clarkson’s evolving side?
Rookie: Colby McKercher $202,800 MID — Last year’s No. 2 draftee was one of the most prolific players in the draft crop, averaging 32.8 disposals and 150 ranking points at the national carnival. He also averaged 144 ranking points in the Coates League.
PORT ADELAIDE
Premium: Zak Butters $636,100 MID — After two tons in the first seven rounds, Butters went bananas for the rest of 2023. From round 8 onwards he averaged 121.6, including a run of 134, 137, 139, 129 and 158 to round out the season.
Mid-pricer: Ollie Wines $463,600 MID — Found himself pushed out of the centre square at times and his SuperCoach scoring dropped dramatically as a result. After three years averaging at least 104, Wines averaged 83 from 23 matches in 2023. Can he unleash the inside bull again?
Rookie: Jase Burgoyne $179,700 DEF — Hard to pinpoint an obvious cheapie at Alberton, but Burgoyne has been on the fringes in recent years and will be pushing to break into the best 23 in 2024. If he gets a role at halfback, Burgoyne will have money-making potential.
RICHMOND
Premium: Tim Taranto $596,100 MID — Taranto’s maiden season as a Tiger was his best yet in SuperCoach, averaging 106.7. He started brilliantly but only averaged 86.9 from round 16 onwards. He managed 6.2 clearances a game and 6.7 tackles in his first campaign at Punt Road.
Mid-pricer: Thomson Dow $254,800 MID — Dow never cracked a regular opportunity under Damien Hardwick, but has reportedly been one of the most impressive Tigers in the club’s first pre-season with Adem Yze as coach. His VFL numbers are encouraging, but a kicking efficiency of 55 per cent in the state league would cap his scoring if it translated to AFL level.
Rookie: Tom Brown $154,200 DEF — The No. 17 draftee from 2021 starts with a higher rookie price after debuting in round 24 last year. Brown had 16 disposals and six marks in that match against Port Adelaide and will be pressing to be a regular part of the Tigers’ defence.
ST KILDA
Premium: Rowan Marshall $639,100 RUC — Marshall’s first season as the first-choice ruckman at St Kilda was a huge success. After averaging in the nineties as Paddy Ryder’s understudy, Marshall scored 15 tons and averaged 114.3 points.
Mid-pricer: Jack Hayes $228,000 FWD — Hayes made a flying start to his AFL career after being drafted out of the SANFL, averaging 89.3 in the first four rounds of 2022. But he has only played twice since, going down with an ACL injury and battling further issues last season. Looms as the perfect foil to Marshall when fit as a forward who can pinch hit in the ruck.
Rookie: Darcy Wilson $130,800 FWD-MID — St Kilda’s first pick of the 2023 draft was the running machine from Murray Bushrangers who averaged 125 ranking points from 11 Coates League matches last year. DPP and pushing for an early debut already.
SYDNEY
Premium: Errol Gulden $622,100 MID — Gulden’s 2023 campaign will go down as one of the great SuperCoach breakouts. He lifted his average from 85.7 in 2022 to 111.3 and was a leading captaincy option by the end of the season. Could get an even bigger lift with more time playing on the inside.
Mid-pricer: Brodie Grundy $481,900 RUC — Grundy scored 143, 144 and 128 in games where he was the No.1 ruckman at Melbourne. Don’t overthink this one. Top ruckmen aren’t often available for less than $500k.
Rookie: Matt Roberts $156,800 MID — Plenty of SuperCoaches flocked to Roberts when he shook off the sub tag and scored 93 in round 5 last season. But he was injured the next week and didn’t return until round 22. His scoring potential but job security looms as a problem.
WEST COAST
Premium: Tim Kelly $574,100 MID — The only player on the West Coast list who averaged more than 100 points last year (102.7). Liam Duggan ranked second with 90.1 points a game. Unlikely to improve much on last year’s numbers until the Eagles start winning more often.
Mid-pricer: Alex Witherden $472,300 DEF — The former Lion looks most likely to be the beneficiary of Shannon Hurn’s retirement. Someone needs to bank all the kick outs at West Coast. Hurn took 92 kick-ins last year and Witherden 89. If that number increases to 120+ it will be a boost for his SuperCoach prospects.
Rookie: Harley Reid $207,300 FWD-MID — In case you somehow haven’t heard, Reid is a very good footballer. He averaged 102 ranking points in three VFL matches, 135 in six Coates League games and 112 in the national carnival last year. Reid being listed as a FWD makes him a must-have, if he already wasn’t.
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Premium: Marcus Bontempelli $724,600 MID — The most expensive player in SuperCoach after averaging 10 points more than any other year in his career. Bontempelli scored tons in 22 games last season and hit 120 points in 15 matches to be a regular captaincy option.
Mid-pricer: James Harmes $258,300 FWD-MID — Greater opportunity beckons for Harmes after Bailey Smith’s ACL injury. He was squeezed out of Melbourne’s star-studded midfield but has averaged
Rookie: Ryley Sanders $184,800 MID — Averaged 36 disposals and 170 ranking points at the Under-18 carnival and 143 in the Coates League. Already winning plenty of admirers in the west.
