AFL 2024: Live updates, SuperCoach scores from Super Sunday of round 9
Nick Daicos versus Harley Reid, Collingwood’s brand new SuperCoach rookies and the winners and losers from the Crows-Lions draw. Here’s what we learned.
SuperCoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Adelaide and Brisbane finished the round with a thrilling draw after Collingwood showed off its premiership credentials in a bug win against the Eagles.
Here’s what we learned for SuperCoach.
Scroll down to recap all the action from Super Sunday.
NICK IS STILL THE MASTER
Nick Daicos and Harley Reid were matched up head to head for stages of the Collingwood-West Coast game. The No.1 draft pick had some impressive moments, but there is no doubt who is still the king of SuperCoach. Daicos had 36 disposals, seven tackles and a goal for 147 points. More than 29 per cent of coaches ranked in the top 10 per cent had the C on Daicos this round – an example we can follow every week. Reid, meanwhile, finished with 59 points which will just about max out his cash generation as one of the year’s most successful rookies.
COLLINGWOOD ROOKIE FACTORY
The Magpies’ long injury list – which had three more names added to it today – has opened the door for some kids and fringe players, and they showed plenty on Sunday afternoon. Joe Richards ($123,900 FWD) was drafted from the Wangaratta Magpies two years ago and starred in his AFL debut with 18 disposals, six tackles and a goal for 107 SuperCoach points.
Lachie Sullivan ($102,400 MID) is on the bubble this week and did his hopes of playing a third game next weekend no harm with 75 points from 18 touches, three clearances and a goal. And Finlay Macrae ($144,700 FWD/MID) is back on the radar after kicking three goals from 18 touches (93 SuperCoach points) in his first full game of the season.
RANKINE F3?
The search for any reliable high-scoring forwards apart from Isaac Heeney and Sam Flanders is ongoing, but Izak Rankine put in a fantastic audition to join them in the premium club. Rankine split his time between the midfield and forward line – attending 10 centre bounces – and lit up the Crows wherever he played on the way to an equal game-high 142 points. That score will push his price over $500k but that figure looks a lot easier to stomach after a glance at the fixture reveals match-ups against West Coast, Hawthorn and Richmond in the next month.
Here’s how Super Sunday played out ...
6:44pm: A DRAW
Wow.
90-90.
What a game.
Crows captain Jordan Dawson, who was huge in the last term, had the chance to be the hero with a flying shot at goal with about a minute left – but it sailed through just left of the goal post to tie the scores.
He spoke to Fox Footy after the siren.
“It’s a bit of a weird one, I probably over-pulled that last shot on goal ... it’s a game of inches, isn’t it,” he said.
“It’s a great game, it can leave a pretty empty feeling at the moment.
“I haven’t played in a draw before, it’s just a weird feeling.”
Asked if he could go again if extra time was in play, Dawson said: “It would be nice to have an outcome.”
6:39pm: HOLD THE PHONE
Callum Ah Chee didn’t read the home-town script. He kicks his fourth goal and scores are level again with 3:36 on the clock.
6:36pm: CROWS IN FRONT
Jordan Dawson AGAIN. He sets up another Darcy Fogarty goal with a perfect 40m kick.
Crows by six points with five minutes left.
This crowd is going bananas.
6:31: ALL TIED UP!
Darcy Fogarty ties the scores with a set shot after another inside 50 from Jordan Dawson who stormed through the centre of the ground – the Crows skipper has found another level and has jumped to 112 SuperCoach points with those two massive plays.
6:28pm: GUESS WHO?
Cometh the hour ... Izak Rankine is the man to keep the Crows alive – and it was a long bomb into the 50 from Jordan Dawson, who has had a quiet last quarter so far, that set up the goal.
Back to six points, 10 minutes to go. Anyone’s game!
6:15pm: LIONS THROW DOWN GAUNTLET
Big goals from Jarrod Berry and Callum Ah Chee give Brisbane a 12-point break.
According to Fox Footy the Lions’ pressure rating in the last quarter is a sky-high 249.
What have the Crows got?
6:10pm: BRAIN BUSTER
Lions sub Shadeau Brain is on the field and almost immediately he’s wrapped up in a huge Darcy Fogarty tackle and pinged for holding the ball.
6:04pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
Darcy Fogarty flies high just before the siren and wins a free ... then hooks his shot at goal on the buzzer way right. But it gives Adelaide a one-point lead at the final change.
Don’t go anywhere!
5:57pm: IZAAAAK
Izak Rankine slams home his second goal after intercepting a Harris Andrews kick from the goal line and dodging a couple of Lions defenders – and the Adelaide crowd erupts.
Full credit to Ben Keays whose diving tackle on Andrews forced his kick off target.
Rankine shoots up to 119 SuperCoach points and it’s still not three quarter-time.
Have we found a premium forward?!

5:55pm: RANKINE CRACKS SUPERCOACH TON
Izak Rankine is the first player to 100 SuperCoach points, with six minutes left in the third term.
Jordan Dawson (89) is having a big day while Harris Andrews (90) has been impassable in defence for the Lions.
5:45pm: CURTIN SUBBED
Adelaide has subbed out prized draft pick Dan Curtin for tactical reasons for hte second week in a row.
But the move might backfire on the Crows as defender Josh Worrell comes from the ground with a serious wrist injury.
5.20pm: HALF TIME SUPERCOACH SCORES
Izak Rankine has been braining it for the Crows, with a mammoth 65-point half, with Jordan Dawson not too far behind.
Dayne Zorko is rewarding those who’ve jumped onto him, while Rory Laird and Jake Soligo have been industrious in the midfield.
Bruce Reville on 32 and Logan Morris on 29 despite two goals, while Dan Curtin is on just 10 SuperCoach points.
4.56pm: JORDAN WATCH
Hello friends, your pal Patch jumping in to give the marvellous Al Paton a breather.
I’m also jumping in to inform you Jordan Dawson has been ROBBED of a contested mark and a goal in the second term.
He went up for a mark in the square with Harris Andrews going back with the flight and punching the ball right out of his hands after he’d already marked it by chopping the arms.
How much my opinion of the incident is clouded by me owning him and wanting him to go really big in SuperCoach is up for debate (it was probably just a really good spoil).
Me yelling at everyone to give it Jordan Dawson. Got the proper #SuperCoach brain worms on this game. pic.twitter.com/s8MlNGffyT

He’s had nine touches and three tackles for 49 points, but I have extensive notes on every time a Crow spurned him and went with another option if anyone wants them.
In players who aren’t Jordan Dawson, Izak Rankine is on 62 (!!) halfway through the second term and looks dangerous for the Crows, while Jake Soligo is on 37.
No-one is running with Josh Dunkkley or Lachie Neale, but neither are doing much damage with 34 and 24 points respectively.
Bruce Reville is up to 33 and Logan Morris is on 25, while Zorko the Magnificent is being followed around by Ben Keays, yet the maestro has 47 points off halfback.
4:47pm: BRUCE WATCH
Papua New Guinea-born rookie Bruce Reville caught the eye of fans and SuperCoaches in his AFL debut last week, and he has started brightly today.
Priced at just $102,400 and a MID/FWD dual-position player, Reville has nine touches and 30 SuperCoach points early in the second term.
He’ll be on the bubble this week.
4:35pm: QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Dayne Zorko all scored 160-plus last week, but they aren’t having it so easy today.
Rory Laird has nine disposals – four more than anyone else on the ground – and Izak Rankine looks super dangerous every time he goes near it.
4:22pm: RANKINE CAUSING HAVOC
Izak Rankine is the danger man here and he’s causing plenty of headaches for Chris Fagan early.
He boots his first goal from outside 50 to go with five disposals and three tackles.
He’s the highest ranked player on the ground for SuperCoach with 40 points midway through the first quarter.
4:02pm: ADELAIDE OVAL IS GO
We’re away in the last game of the round. Izak Rankine starts in the centre square and Charlie Cameron boots the first goal of the game, but the Crows answer via Elliot Himmelberg.

3:31pm: PIES WIN, JOE RICHARDS TONS!
West Coast kicked the first goal of the game through Ryan Maric, Collingwood responded about a minute later and didn’t look back.
Nick Daicos was huge with a game-high 36 disposals and there were some great signs from Collingwood’s new faces, led by Wangaratta’s own Joe Richards who scored 106 SuperCoach points in his first AFL game.
Harley Reid finished with 58 points and will get a small price rise this week.
3:18pm: MORE PIES INJURIES
Collingwood’s injury crisis has only gotten worse today, with three Collingwood players now ruled out of the game.
Jeremy Howe was subbed out early with a groin injury, small forward Harvey Harrison hurt his ankle and sub Jack Bytel has failed a concussion test.
Bobby Hill is out there but seems to have a serious limp.
West Coast has copped it as well. Jeremy McGovern has been taken to hospital after a heavy collision left him with suspected internal injuries, following Jack Petruccelle’s ankle injury in the first quarter.
3:11pm: FINAL TEAMS FOR CROWS v LIONS
There are no late changes for the final game of the round.
Brisbane debutant Shadeau Brain, who has one of the great names in footy history, will start as the sub in his first AFL game. Luke Nankervis is Adelaide’s starting sub.
3:00pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
How high can Nick Daicos go?
Harley Reid has 36 points and still needs six more to hit his Break Even this round.
2:44pm: NICK DAICOS WATCH
Nick has hit the SuperCoach ton halfway through the third quarter.
He has 25 disposals, six tackles and a goal, and has upped his efficiency to 65 per cent.
He’s on for a massive score!
2:20pm: HALFTIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
Coaches with Nick Daicos as captain will be happy with how he’s travelling, and we suddenly have some Magpie cheapies on the radar!
Harley Reid has 30 points at halftime, still 12 under his Break Even of 42. He has made $227k this season but might have nearly topped out.
1:57pm: PIES ROOKIE WATCH
Collingwood’s injuries have opened the door for some fringe players, and they could become steals in SuperCoach.
Joe Richards ($123k FWD), drafted in 2022 from the Wangaratta Magpies, is finally getting his chance and is grabbing it with both hands – he has 61 SuperCoach points before halftime in his first AFL game.
Another mature-ager Lachie Sullivan ($102k MID) has booted a goal and has 43 points in his second game. He’ll be a popular trade target on the bubble this week.
And Finlay Macrae ($144k FWD/MID) is back in the team and doing his best to set up a decent run in the seniors with two goals and 55 points.

1:50pm: DAICOS OFF TARGET
Nick Daicos streams through the 50 but his shot at goal sails wide – and it fits a pattern today.
He has been everywhere early in this game, racking up 14 disposals halfway through the second quarter, but is using the ball at just 43 per cent efficincy.
He has a very healthy 57 SuperCoach points but could be on a lot more!
1:40pm: HOWE OUT
Collingwood has activated its sub with Jeremy Howe sitting on the bench with a huge ice pack on his leg.
Jack Bytel is into the game.
1:35pm: QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
A strong start from Pies first-gamer Joe Richards, who could have had more points if he hadn’t missed two shots at goal. Harley Reid has 21 points at the first break.
West Coast has also pulled the trigger early on its sub with Harvey Johnston replacing Jack Petruccelle (ankle) early in the second quarter
1:23pm: HARLEY TAKES OFF!
Not happy with Nick Daicos getting all the attention Harley Reid launches himself over Jack Darling and Billy Frampton to take a huge grab on the wing.

1:12pm: SUPERCOACH ALERT
Nick Daicos has started this game on fire – he has 34 points, and we’re not even halfway through the first quarter.
29 per cent of SuperCoaches ranked in the top 10 per cent have Daicos as captain this round.
Harley Reid’s first touch was a free kick against, sending him to -2, but a long kick inside 50 has him back in the positives.
Darcy Cameron, Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom are all flying as the Pies take an early lead.

1:08PM: HOWE ABOUT THAT
Jeremy Howe is playing at full-forward to cover for a host of injured Magpies and he has an early goal after winning a free for holding the ball.
After Ryan Maric kicked the first goal of the game Collingwood has replied in quick fashion with goals to Howe and Patrick Lipinski – and Nick Daicos let’s fly from 50 and it’s home!
1:02PM: WE’RE AWAY
Play is underway at Marvel Stadium – and Harley Reid is standing next to Scott Pendlebury at the opening bounce.
12:30 FINAL TEAMS
The team sheets are in and there are no late changes for either side.
Ex-Saint Jack Bytel will start as the sub in his first game for Collingwood. Harvey Johnston is West Coast’s starting sub.
