AFL 2024: All the SuperCoach takeaways and analysis from Super Saturday, round 22

An incredible day of footy ends in heartbreak for two clubs, as SuperCoaches continue to search for the number one ruck option. See the three SuperCoach takeaways from Super Saturday below.

Essendon’s season is all but over after Mac Andrew’s after-the-siren sealer gave the Suns their first victory on the road.

The young back-turned-forward finished with four goals, five marks and 75 SuperCoach points.

All teams who have trailed at three quarter time so far this round, have won.

The Cats proved too strong for Fremantle in Perth, celebrating Cameron’s 250th game in style following a Mannagh match winner.

The Dockers have now lost five games which they’ve led at three-quarter time.

Essendon and Melbourne’s finals hopes are all but gone after they fell to Gold Coast and Port Adelaide respectively.

Earlier, the Eagles and Giants pulled off upset wins to kickstart Super Saturday.

Recap all the action and the three SuperCoach takeaways below.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

DON’T FORGET ABOUT SCALING

It is one of the joys of SuperCoach, the scaling system.

We saw Heeney earn 80 points in the final quarter last night, but tonight, respective skippers Max Gawn and Zach Merrett too capitalised on this system.

Merrett (50 points) and Gawn (47) added considerable numbers too their tally as they attempted to drag their sides across the line.

It wasn’t enough in the end, but it comes as a reminder to make sure you have the match winners in your side.

When choosing who to target with your final trade, keep your eyes peeled for the game-changing stars with easy match ups.

Remember, we’ve done all of the analysis for you here.

RUCK BATTLE RAGES ON

Who will claim the All-Australian ruck blazer?

It may still have to be Gawn after today’s valiant performance - but Xerri was just as good as his Roos also failed to claim victory.

SuperCoach wise, Xerri has now scored eleven consecutive score above 100, and boasts a three-round average of 134.7.

Across the season in it’s totality so far, Gawn boasts 16 tons, while Xerri has 17.

In terms of the All-Australian blazer, how much recency bias comes into it?

In SuperCoach terms, Xerri has me sold. He has blazed home to finish the year strong, and looms as the perfect starting pick for 2025.

Tonight, though, Gawn reminded us all why he is one of the best SuperCoach players in recent times.

Is it too soon to give up on him?

CASH COWS ARE COMING

Once you run out of trades, it’s only natural to look to 2025.

Many young stars staked their claim to be in cash cow contention come next year, with Giants trio Finn Callaghan, James Peatling and Darcy Jones looking to finish the year with reasonable price tags.

Another player I have my eye on is Reuben Ginbey, who has responded well after missing the start of the year through injury.

Sam Durham may finally string together consecutive tons in 2025 after pushing to do so this year, while Horne-Francis remains under $500k ... for now.

FT SuperCoach Analysis

Gawn and Picket did all they could, but it wasn’t enough to save their season.

Super-sub Quinton Narkle rose to 37 points after his last quarter heroics, but it was Horne-Francis and Butters who lifted Port Adelaide to glory.

FT SuperCoach Analysis: Melbourne v Port Adelaide

Mac Andrew was the hero at Marvel, but Merrett was another skipper who never gave up.

Essendon controlled the contest late, but Collins and Anderson steered the ball back into the Suns’ forward half, while Rowell returned to his bullish best.

Caldwell scored only 55 points after losing his centre bounce attendances upon Parish’s return.

10.15PM: ANDREW BURIES BOMBERS

That’s the game as an incredible mark from Andrew in the dying minutes sees him sink the Bombers after the siren.

It comes after he was a key contributor to the half-time melee, injecting energy into the second half, where he scored three of his four goals.

It will be incredibly difficult, now, for Essendon to break it’s finals drought, while Gold Coast were able to break a hoodoo of it’s own.

After 23 rounds, it’s now clinched it’s first win in an away game - and ironically, it came at Hardwick’s hated Marvel Stadium.

10.06PM: DRAMA AT MARVEL

Jade Gresham ran into an open goal square, looking to all but secure victory and finals hope for Essendon - but a free kick was paid against him for pushing his opponent.

Gold Coast have transferred the ball forward ...

One minute remains.

10.05PM: CHAOS BALL

It is contest after contest as Essendon fights for it’s season.

Skipper Zach Merrett sits on 142 points.

10.03PM: POWER WIN

Port Adelaide have beaten Melbourne by two points at the MCG, ending the latter’s finals hopes.

Gawn (177) did all he can despite battling injury, while Horne-Francis (144) willed his side over the line.

At Marvel, three minutes remain.

Jake Stringer has missed a series of shots, with Essendon leading by five points.

Can they hold on?

9.57PM: A POINT A PIECE?

One-point leads have emerged for Essendon and Port Adelaide.

It feels like the next score wins in either game, and the SuperCoach scaling will be off the charts for whoever can record - or prevent - a major score.

9.52PM: A GOAL A PIECE

Both games currently see one-goal margins, and will both shape the eight at the end of the round.

That was, until, Narkle scores! And Flanders! Within a minute of each other!

You wouldn’t read about it - both games are tied.

Gold Coast have won five of the last six clearances at Marvel.

9.50PM: SWALLOW ON

Gold Coast has activated it’s sub, with David Swallow replacing Walter (tactical).

9.44PM: DRAPER MISSES, KOZZIE FIRES

Pickett slots his fourth to recapture the lead for Melbourne at the MCG, while Draper fails to find a fourth of his own at Marvel.

It is second-gamer Archie Roberts who puts Essendon in front with his first AFL goal.

Wow.

Rowell has 16 contested possessions, but the Suns are starting to look shaky.

Can they get the win on the road they so desperately need?

9.30PM: POWER IN FRONT

At the MCG, Port Adelaide take the lead from Melbourne through a Dixon major.

Pickett and Butters respectively loom large in this ladder-shaping contest.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis

In a low scoring affair, Melbourne 6.5(41) lead Port Adelaide 5.8(38) heading into the final term.

So far this round, all winners have trailed at quarter time ...

Butters lifted in the third and is on the brink on breaking the ton.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Melbourne v Port Adelaide
3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Melbourne v Port Adelaide

There’s been no more melees at Marvel, where Gold Coast lead by four.

Another close contest means some nice scaling for SuperCoaches, but another nail biter for Bombers fans.

Martin has lifted, while Rowell has fallen away.

9.20PM: BOMBERS BREAK AWAY?

Caddy kicks another, and with 65 points, he will record a career high.

The Bombers are unable to break away, though, as Jed Walter kicks two back-to-back goals.

9.14PM: SATURDAY SMILES

Here is some good news for your Saturday, especially if you support Brisbane, North Melbourne or Fremantle ...

At the MCG, Gawn (107) and Pickett (100) have broken the ton, with Horne-Francis (96) not far behind.

9.08PM: FUEL TO THE FIRE

Lead melee contributor Mac Andrew has kicked two goals to start the second term.

Was the brawl what the Suns needed to bring them back to life?

Draper - who was too heavily involved - slots the reply, but tempers remain mellowed.

This contest in becoming an end-to-end affair as Gold Coast mids Flanders and Rowell propel the ball back into their forward half.

8.55PM: MARSHALL OUT

At the MCG, Marshall failed his concussion test.

He’s been replaced by Quinton Narkle.

Menwhile, Melbourne extend their lead through Kozzie Pickett, who kick his third goal for the night.

HT SuperCoach Analysis

Horne-Francis has shaped the game, while Gawn is willing his side towards victory.

Jase Burgoyne ($436,700) boasts a three-round average of 96 and is well on his way to achieving this number once more.

Connor Rozee (32) and Zak Butters (45) have been quiet, while Clayton Oliver sits on only 18.

Here are the leaders:

A melee ensued at half time at Marvel Stadium, which is bound to add flare to an already contested game.

Merrett and Rowell lead the way in the middle, but the difference in their SuperCoach output comes down to efficiency.

Caddy (52) is on track to beat his career-best of 59, while Nic Martin (50) should break the ton.

Caldwell sits on only 26, and those without him may have the upper hand with the anti-POD play.

8.40PM: FREES AGAINST

That’s two free kicks against Alex Davies in a row.

This results in a total of eight points lost.

Luckily, only 261 coaches own him.

Essendon lead by 10 points.

8.34PM: MERRETT REMAINS ON TOP

Essendon’s skipper has 66 points with six minutes to play, and will be instrumental if they are to keep the lead at half time.

Rowell only has 47 points from a whopping 18 disposals, with an efficiency of only 50%.

8.33PM: MCG LEADERS

Gawn and Horne-Francis both sit on 71 points nearing half time as Melbourne lead by three points.

8.3oPM: PURPLE PATCH

Gold Coast have kicked three in a row following impressive patches of play from Bailey Humphrey.

The purple patch ceases, though, as Caddy and Sam Durham provide replies for the Bombers.

Jason Dunstall continues to question players bouncing the ball ... should someone inform him of Cench’s zero-bounce team?

8.29PM: CONCUSSION SCARES

Nik Cox (concussion) has been subbed out for Essendon at Marvel Stadium, replaced by Hobbs, while Todd Marshall is undergoing a concussion test at the MCG.

8.27PM: GAWN GOOD TO GO

Around the grounds, Max Gawn just won a free kick - that’s SuperCoach Gold.

He sits on 55 points with five minutes to play in the first half in what is currently a four-point contest.

8.23PM: KING x3

Ben King remains in the Coleman Medal race, with 52 goals to his name after recording three so far.

Nik Cox was collateral damage in King’s latest goal, heading to the rooms following a big hit.

Essendon’s sub Ben Hobbs is getting warm.

8.17PM: BACK TO BACK

Essendon go back-to-back at Marvel Stadium with two incredible goals.

The first bodes well for SuperCoaches, with popular pick Jye Caldwell (31% owned) pulling off an incredible snap.

His centre bounce attendances and scoring output continue to remain low, though, following Parish’s return.

Sam Draper also fired from long range, lifting Bombers fans to their feet.

8.10PM: HORNE-FRANCIS GOES AGAIN

It’s now his second goal for the game, extending the Power’s lead to eight points as they look towards the top two.

He’s risen to 34 points and at only 10% ownership, looms as a scary finals POD.

7.59PM: SUPERCOACH ROOKIE FLYS

Sam Clohesy no longer graces as many teams as he once did - now at 16% ownership - but he has graced the skies and the SuperCoach leaderboard alike tonight.

He sits on 41 points with two minutes to play.

7.55PM: MERRETT LOOSE

Eight disposals and three clearances already, Zach Merrett will be a problem all night for the Suns.

The contest remains end-to-end at Marvel, with Harry Jones getting the Bombers back within a point.

7.53PM: JHF STEADIES POWER

Jason Horne-Francis’ goal wasn’t very steady itself, but it does keep Port Adelaide in the contest early, preventing the Dees from kicking away.

7.51PM: ROWELL RETURNS

Recapturing his start-of-season form last week with a score of 122, Matt Rowell is another player who is on fire early.

Regardless, the clearance count remains even early.

7.49PM: DEES START HOT

At the MCG, Melbourne have started strong with the first two goals of the game.

Despite speculation about whether he will finish the season, SuperCoach favourite and Dees skipper Max Gawn sits on 17 points.

7.42PM: FLANDERS FIRES

Sam Flanders has started strong once more.

Despite ending his consecutive streak of tons last week, with his first sub-100 score all year, Flanders has started hot, sitting on 24 points after seven minutes.

7.30PM: SUBS NAMED

The substitutes have been named for tonight’s matches, with Ben Hobbs (ESS), David Swallow (GCS), Quinton Narkle (PORT) and Jake Melksham (MELB) starting on the sidelines.

FT SuperCoach Analysis

While the Dockers didn’t get the win, Ryan owners sure did as he reclaimed the title of kick-in King.

Clark followed suit, while Serong was also massive.

Mannagh finished with a respectable 72 points after sealing the match winner, while Jackson (81) had minimal impact despite Darcy’s absence.

Holmes continues a strong season, breaking the ton once more.

Here are the leaders:

FT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong
FT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong

7.06PM: MANNAGH THE MATCH WINNER

With just over a minute to play, it seems to be all but over after a major from Mannagh.

He will be the beneficiary of some serious scaling, as the Dockers are now two kicks away from the lead.

Is there one more twist in this tale?

7.03PM: THREE TO GO

There’s three minutes to go, and Dangerfield just missed a soccer shot on goal.

A score review destroyed any opportunity for the Dockers to capitalise when the Cats were on the back foot.

Moments later, the skipper misses another - this time a set shot.

The pressure is high and the scaling will be off the charts.

6.50PM: SERONG GOES AGAIN

That’s his third goal of the day to accompany 20 disposals and six clearances, willing the Dockers back in front.

Karl Worner comes into the game, replacing Matt Taberner (tactical).

The crowd at Optus Stadium lifts to its feet - but not for long, as Geelong go coast-to-coast as Neale kicks another.

Geelong’s pressure rating sits at 213 to Fremantle’s 179, and you can tell.

6.45PM: DANGER ZONE

I know, it’s a cheesy title ...

But a huge contested mark for Geelong great Patrick Dangerfield sees his side recapture the lead in what has become an end-to-end contest.

The Cats’ pressure has lifted once more, reminiscent of their first quarter endeavours.

I think Clark will need some more pickle juice!

3QT SuperCoach Analysis

Clark continued to fire in the third term despite evident cramping, while Geelong were wasteful in front of goal.

Ryan is rewarding owners who held him - or are stuck with him after running out of trades - breaking the ton for the second consecutive week after four sub 100 scores.

Jeremy Sharp remains in 12% of teams and could very much assist owners in a head-to-head finals victory.

Jackson, however, will need to do more, sitting on 60, while Geelong’s Humphries has only 38 points.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong
3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong

6.30PM: NEV AMISS

After a quiet night, Amiss doesn’t miss from straight in front to grant Fremantle the lead.

Bench press extraordinaire Patrick Voss’ double fend-off allowed him the mark to take the set shot.

In what’s been a close contest all evening, Geelong have kicked 1.5 this quarter - will it rue inaccuracy?

6.22PM: SUPERCOACH SPECTACULAR

Popular SuperCoach selections Serong and Jackson were the only goal scorers for the term - until Shaun Mannagh joined the party. The third scorer is yet another popular pick, with the rookie sitting in 33% of teams.

6.15PM: MID FIRES AGAIN

Serong once again marks down forward - this time on the lead - and converts his set shot.

He’s inflicting damage all over the ground, which is bound to see his score rise.

His recent form is pushing him right back into Brownlow contention.

6.10PM: JACKSON EMERGES

Jackson levels the game once more, extending his output to 59 points.

6.06PM: BRUHN OUT

Young mid Tanner Bruhn (concussion) will exit the game for the Cats, replaced by Oisin Mullin.

HT SuperCoach Analysis

A great contest is unfolding in Perth, with the Cats leading by a goal at the main break.

Clark tops all SuperCoach scorers, while fellow milestone man Cameron sits on 51 points.

Jackson has largely failed to fire, and another low scoring second half looms, but popular picks Serong, Ryan and Young are battling hard for the home side.

Here are the leaders:

HT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong
HT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong

5.39PM: WHERE’S JACKSON?

Darcy’s absence was music to Jackson-owners’ ears after 48 SuperCoach points last week, but he’s currently being outscored and outplayed by Stanley.

Meanwhile, Luke Ryan is getting his ankle strapped - lets hope he returns for the second half.

5.24PM: YOUNG AGAIN

Young from 55m on the run from centre bounce - for the second week running - shortly after a goal assist!

There’s no wonder why he’s so highly rated at the moment.

The retro guernsey makes it even better.

Sam Sturt has levelled the contest.

5.22PM: MESSI MIERS

Did you see that? An incredible snap from the boundary line from Gryan ‘Leo Messi’ Miers as this contest heats up.

5.18PM: FREO FIGHT BACK

Fremantle now lead the disposal, clearance and inside 50 count and it asserts itself to begin the second quarter.

Serong has been immense, almost doubling his SuperCoach score in only five minutes.

QT SuperCoach Analysis

A hot start from the visitors saw Cameron and Dempsey rise to the top, while Stanley has 14 hit-outs to Jackson’s 6 at the first break, despite Sean Darcy being a late out.

Young started strong but sits on only 19 points, while Stewart has only 13 after only three disposals and one mark.

Here are the leaders:

QT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong
QT SuperCoach Analysis: Fremantle v Geelong

5.05PM: COOL CALM CLARK

In his 100th game, Jordan Clark went back a slotted a set shot from long range, only to finish off with an Olympics-style celebration.

He closes the margin to 13 points at quarter time.

4.56PM: PRESSURE’S HOT

The Cats have brought the heat, although Perth is already hot ...

Sitting at 238 on the pressure gauge, they have the ascendancy over the Dockers, who sit on 145.

4.53PM: MID, FWD?

Caleb Serong won’t ever be a mid/fwd in SuperCoach, but so many of his early season tons came off the back of his ability to hit the scoreboard.

He registers the Dockers’ first.

A quick side note - I don’t know about you, but I’m loving Fremantle’s retro guernsey - is Pav coming on soon? I’m sure we could all use him in our SuperCoach sides at the moment!

4.49PM: MID FIRES

Hayden Young (19% owned) has a three-round average of 117, and is the highest rated player in the competition since Round 17.

He currently has 23 points from only three disposals.

Meanwhile, Geelong rookie Lawson Humphries has seven points from five disposals due to two early turnovers.

4.48PM: FOUR IN A ROW

Geelong have piled on the pain early at Optus Stadium with three goals, including one each to POD Jeremy Cameron (8% owned) and rookie-turned-cash-cow Ollie Dempsey (9 % owned), who both sit on 25 points early in the piece.

Jackson has 24, leading the way for the Dockers.

4.20PM: DARCY LATE OUT

Luke Jackson’s SuperCoach owners can rejoice — Sean Darcy is a late out for today’s clash with Geelong.

Jackson will be rucking against Rhys Stanley.

If you had traded Jackson out this week, use update trade in SuperCoach to reverse that move quickly!

4.10PM: THE GIANTS ARE IN FRONT!

Darcy Jones kicks a goal after Aaron Cadman’s snap and GWS leads at the Gabba!

This crazy season might be about to take another big turn.

4PM: MCGOVERN FLYING

Did anyone hold Jeremy McGovern while he was out injured?

He’s on 115 early in the third quarter against North Melbourne and has a game-high 11 intercepts.

The next best is Charlie Comben with seven.

The Eagles have drawn level in Tasmania, with two thrilling finishes in store for the Saturday afternoon games.

3.48PM: WHITFIELD BACK ON

GWS has made its sub — and it’s not Lachie Whitfield.

After being assessed for an injury concern in the third quarter, he’s back out there.

Harvey Thomas has gone off and Conor Stone is into the game.

It looks like Whitfield has gone forward in a Nic Martin-style move from Aaron Cadman.

He’s set up an Aaron Cadman goal and gone above 70 points now.

3.40PM: CATS LATE CHANGE

You can all breathe — the Geelong late change you knew were coming has happened.

Gary Rohan won’t play against Fremantle.

He’s been replaced in the side by Oisin Mullin.

Mullin is the sub, while Karl Worner is sub for the Dockers in a crucial game for the top eight.

3.35PM: WHITFIELD DOWN TO ROOMS

Bit of concern for one of the hottest players in SuperCoach — Lachie Whitfield has gone down to the rooms.

The Lions have made a point of physically testing Whitfield today and he was crunched in a contest midway through the third quarter and looked to come off second best.

Whitfield is on 64 points after live scoring had him on 34 at quarter-time.

“He went to take off his boot before the physio grabbed him,” Alastair Lynch tells Fox Footy.

“He really struggled for two minutes on the ground.”

3.30PM: TREW STORY?

We kind find anything that suggests they are related, but it’s been a good week for athletes with the surname Trew.

First, Arisa Trew won a skateboarding gold in Paris.

Now, Zane Trew is enjoying his breakout game for West Coast.

It could be an interesting call for abour 40 SuperCoaches in the top 1 per cent who have Trew on their benches.

Would you take a premium off to loop a 100+ score? I would.

North Melbourne has a comfortable lead in Tasmania, while goals are proving hard to come by in the third quarter at the Gabba.

3.20PM: NEALE GETS ON BOARD

Lachie Neale has seized advantage from a freekick to deliver an important goal for Brisbane — and his SuperCoach owners.

Neale was only on 31 points at halftime after being closely watched by Toby Bedford but has already had five disposals in the third quarter to jump to 62 points.

3.15PM: XERRI HAS TAKE OFF

Tristan Xerri’s SuperCoach owners were concerned when live scores showed him on less than 20 points at quarter-time. Since then the Roos ruckman — touted as an All-Australian favourite — has scored almost 70 points in little more than a quarter.

Xerri is owned by 37.5 per cent of coaches in the top 1 per cent of SuperCoach and 27.2 per cent of those have him as vice-captain today.

Colby McKercher and Harry Sheezel are also scoring well while Tom Powell is on track for his best score of the year.

Well done if you held Powell this long, very few of us did.

Half time scores - Brisbane v GWS. Picture: Supplied.

Will Ashcroft is having his best game this season and it’s showing in SuperCoach. He has 17 disposals and 84 SuperCoach points. Jarrod Berry is next best with 71. Finn Callaghan is the best for the Giants with 68 after kicking a goal in the first half and having 12 disposals. It’s been a tough half for Lachie Neale, who is being tagged. He has 30 points. In the other match, Tristan Xerri and Colby McKercher are the leader in SuperCoach with 81 and 80 respectively. McKercher has had 24 disposals in the first half and is on track for a big number. The best Eagles player is Zane Trew who is on 59.

3pm: Stats for both games

North v West Coast

Goals: North - T. Powell 2, T. Pink, E. Ford, R. Hansen Jr, H. Sheezel, B. Teakle; West Coast - J. Darling, Z. Trew, J. Williams

Disposals: C. McKercher 24, H. Sheezel 20, T. Powell 15, J. Simpkin 15, D. Tucker; West Coast - R Maric 13, T. Coles 10, T. Kelly 10, J. McGovern 10, Z. Trew 10.

Brisbane v GWS

Goals: Brisbane - C. Ah Chee 2, J. Daniher, C. Cameron, O. McInerney, L. Morris; GWS - F. Callaghan, B. Daniels, T. Greene, J. Hogan, C. Ward

Disposals: Brisbane - W. Ashcroft 17, J. Berry 15, J. Dunkley 12, D. Zorko 12, C. Cameron 11; GWS - T. Green 13, C. Idun 13, L. Whitfield 13, F. Callaghan 12, J. Hogan 9.

2.55pm: Lions lead despite Giants comeback

GWS kicked five goals in the second term to come back into the contest but the Lions remain in the lead at the main break. Brisbane leads by 11 points. Score: Lions 6.8.(44) to GWS 5.3.(33).

2.53pm: North leads at main break

North Melbourne have kicked the last five goals of the game and lead by 22 points at half time. The Kangaroos kept the Eagles goalless in the second term and kicked three goals themselves. Score: 7.6.(48) to 3.8.(26).

2.48pm: Kangaroos kicking away

Tom Powell kicks two goals in the space of a couple of minutes and North leads by 21 points closing on half time. West Coast have been kept goalless this term. Meanwhile Harry Sheezel has gone off and into the change rooms with an injury but it looks like he’ll be okay.

2.45pm: Giants close to within a goal

Brent Daniels is starting to become a star of the game. He’s helped the Giants come back and kicks a goal to reduce the margin to six closing on half time.

2.32pm: Close contest in Hobart

There is nothing between the Eagles and the Kangaroos. North leads by five points but neither team have kicked a goal in the second term.

2.28pm: Giants respond

This has been some response by GWS. The Giants have started to win the ball in the middle and have kicked three goals on the bounce. Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene have also got on the scoreboard, each kicking a goal. Suddenly the margin is 12 points and the Lions will rue not kicking more goals in the first term.

2.19pm: Lions dominate first quarter

This game should be over but the Lions have kept the Giants in the hunt with their inaccuracy. Brisbane leads by 30 points at the first change but have only kicked four goals from 11 scoring shots. All up, the Lions had 15 shots on goal with a couple going out of bounds on the full. The Lions dominated but should be up by seven or eight goals. Score: Lions 4.7.(31) to GWS 0.1.(1).

2.15pm: North fights back to lead

North Melbourne kicks the last two goals of the quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game against the Eagles. Toby Pink kicks a goal right on the siren to give the Kangaroos the lead. Score: North 4.2.(26) to Eagles 3.3.(21).

2.08pm: Lions on top

The contest could be over already between the Lions and the Giants. Brisbane are up by 27 points but could be leading by more than six goals. GWS needs to lift and do it quickly.

2pm: Danger signs for GWS

Brisbane kicks to a 13-point lead early but the worry is GWS are not getting the ball. The Giants have one inside 50 and are -9 when it comes to contested possessions. Last week the Saints got smashed in that area and on the scoreboard. The Giants will want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

1.56pm: West Coast on top

The Eagles have made a good start down in Hobart, kicking the first two goals of the game. The tall forwards are causing havoc to the Kangaroos defence.

1.50pm: No goals early

Both games have yet to see a goal in the opening five minutes. Aaron Cadman got the closest for the Giants, with a brilliant snap from the boundary line, but the ball clipped the post so it was a behind. Lions lead by one point and North leads by the same margin against the Eagles.

1.45pm: Both games underway

We are underway in Hobart and Brisbane for the first two games this afternoon.

1.15pm: Gaff starts as sub

Andrew Gaff’s second to last game will be spent mostly on the bench, barring injury to someone else, with West Coast putting the veteran as the sub for the match. North Melbourne have selected Zane Duursma as their sub for the match. For Brisbane, against GWS, the Lions have put Jaxon Prior as sub. GWS have picked Conor Stone as the sub for the match.

1pm - Welcome to the blog

It promises to be a big Saturday as Brisbane chases a top two spot and North Melbourne look to keep on winning against West Coast in the first two games of the day.

Subs will be announced in the next post.
