AFL 2024: Live updates, SuperCoach scores for North Melbourne v Collingwood, GWS Giants v Port Adelaide

Taggers shut down two of the biggest names in SuperCoach, and one could have a date with the tribunal as a result. But Nick Daicos was having none of it. Recap all the big SuperCoach news

Collingwood has pulled off yet another miracle comeback – and this one might top the lot.

The Magpies were 54 points down after a stunning first half from North Melbourne, but stormed home to claim the narrowest of victories.

But it wasn’t without controversy.

And an inaccuate GWS has held out an equally inaccurate Port Adelaide in the final game of the round to consolidate its spot in the top eight.

Scroll down to see the big SuperCoach takeaways and replay all the Sunday action.

TAGGER CITY

We said taggers were back last week, well now they’re really back. North Melbourne made a late change to bring in Will Phillips, who tracked Nick Daicos for three quarters before being subbed off. Then Zak Butters (Toby Bedford) and Tom Green (Willen Drew) had targets on their back at ENGIE Stadium. The young midfield stars didn’t handle it too well – Butters finished with 76 SuperCoach points and Green 80 – but there is no stopping Daicos, who exploded after a quiet first half to finish with 129 as a key architect of Collingwood’s comeback.

POWELL MIA

Coaches who held Tom Powell hoping for a solid score through the byes or even a bargain forward keeper will be very disappointed after he could manage only 37 points. He was one of the few Roos to miss out on the party early, with only two touches in the first quarter and just 12 for the game. He also managed to give away a crucial 50m penalty to Nick Daicos in the third term that resulted in a Magpie goal.

LIVE SCORING ROLLERCOASTER

Following live scores was a wild ride in Sunday’s Marvel Stadium epic. George Wardlaw and Harry Sheezel were both tracking for close to 200 points when the Roos led by nine goals, with Luke Davies-Uniacke not far behind. At one stage there were three Kangaroos over 100 before halftime while Nick Daicos was in the 30s. Then everything flipped on its head with Daicos rewarded for his match-turning acts while points from the first half suddenly became less valuable with the game up for grabs. Davies-Uniacke scored almost 90 in the first half then barely moved for a quarter and a half before a string of crucial contest wins in the dying minutes shot his score up to 147. 6:40pm: GIANTS WIN

GWS kicked a horribly inaccurate 9.19 but it was enough to defeat an also horribly inaccurate Port Adelaide (6.15).

No surprise the respective kick-in takers put up massive SuperCoach totals!

It was a tough afternoon for Zak Butters (76 points) and Tom Green (80) but both had some important touches in the last quarter.

6:30pm: PORT ALIVE?
This has been a low-scoring, inaccurate arm-wrestle all day – both teams have kicked a combined 14.32 – but Port keeps its hopes alive with a long goal to Esava Ratugolea.

Unfortunately for Port fans, Todd Marshall misses the chance to make it even closer.

Fourteen points in it with just over four minutes to play – and Ken Hinkley is holding up the blue hot rod sign!

6:20pm: TOBY FINDS THE TARGET

Toby Greene had 0.5 for the afternoon but he finally kicks truly to give the Giants a 23-point break with 10 minutes to go.

And just to rub it in for Tom Green owners, he had marked 30m out directly in front but the umpire gave the ball to Toby after Quinton Narkle tried to take mark of the year by jumping on his head and failed miserably.

6:15pm: WHAT’S HAPPENED TO TOM GREEN?
Tom Green opened the season with scores of 132, 152 and 137.

But things have unravelled since his ankle injury in the opening minutes of the Sydney derby. Since then he has scored 116, 95, 78 and 79 – and he’s on 70 points midway through the final term.

His value has fallen to $473k from a high of $637k in round 5, and is set to drop further with a Break Even of 121 today.

6:00pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME

Massive night for Dan Houston in Sydney but a disappoining one for a lot of popular picks.

Zak Butters and Tom Green are both being tagged, and are on 65 and 46 points respectively.

Lachie Whitfield is rewarding those who held with 97 at the final change.

5.35pm: WHITFIELD STRUGGLING

Lachie Whitfield is getting his ribs assessed after a bruising hit in the centre of the ground. Whitfield went down and struggled to get back up after being cleaned up by a Power player after disposing of the ball, but now looks relatively pain-free on the bench.

5:20pm: IS BUTTERS IN STRIFE?

Zak Butters lost his cool in this exchange with Tom Green, does he have a case to answer?

5:10pm: HALFTIME

After conceding the first four goals of the game, the Giants responded with the next four including a goal to Harvey Thomas with three seconds left in the half.

Dan Houston is having a massive day with 18 disposals including 17 kicks.

Zak Butters has eight disposals under a heavy tag from Toby Bedford.

4:47pm: GIANTS HAVE A GOAL

It took until five minutes into the second term but after seven behinds GWS has its first goal via Callum Brown. He couldn’t miss after Esava Ratugolea kicked it straight to him 10m out.

Tag update – Willem Drew is following Tom Green.

4:35pm: QUARTER-TIME

Dan Houston has eight disposals – all kicks – while Lachie Whitfield is running rings around defensive forward Jed McEntee.

Five disposals for Tom Green ... but only one has hit the target. He has 17 points thanks to two tackles and four contested possessions.

4:10pm: BUTTERS TAG

Zak Butters appears to be the latest star to cop a hard tag with Toby Bedford assigned the stopping job.

4:00pm: POWER STRIKES FIRST

Port Adelaide has the first goal of the final game of the round through Mitch Georgiades.

There were no late changes.

Toby McMullin is the Giants’ sub again while Quinton Narkle is starting as the Power sub.

3:53pm: DID 50 CALL COST ROOS?

We’ll see this one a bit over the next few days. Bailey Scott marks outside 50 as the clock ticks down and two Collingwood players charge at him. Some might argue that’s an obvious 50m penalty! But the umpire waved play on ... and the rest is history.

3:50pm: FULL-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Luke Davies-Uniacke was immense in the final minutes and the second half was the Nick Daicos show.

3:46pm: MAGPIE MIRACLE

Collingwood has done it again – one-point winners in an absolutely insane game.

Zac Fisher nearly blew it for North Melbourne when he turned over a kick-in but he could have been the hero, with a scrambled snap over his shoulder floating towards goal as the siren sounded – but it went just on the wrong side of the post.

Absolute heartbreak for the Roos who were brilliant for three quarters but couldn’t survive the Magpie avalanche.

3:40pm: BOBBY DOES IT AGAIN

Collingwood is back in front!

Bobby Hill takes his second ridiculous hanger for the day. He didn’t get as high this time but the pressure was absolutely insane.

Fitting for this game.

3:37pm: NORTH IN FRONT

Holy moly.

The Roos have their first goal of the final term – through recruit Brynn Teakle.

It wasn’t overly convincing but North has the lead back. This is crazy stuff.

3:35pm: PIES IN FRONT

Unbelievable.

Another goal assist from guess who – Nick Daicos.

Collingwood has come from 54 points down to lead by one point with five minutes to play.

3:29pm: SUPER NICK

Nick Daicos – who else – charges through the middle of Marvel Stadium and hits up Bobby Hill with a 60m bullet.

And I don’t even know how to explain how he started that play – about to receive a handball under pressure he instead did a mid-air bicycle kick that rebounded to a teammate. Then he was off to the races.

It’s four goals to nothing in the final term and there is one kick in it.

North Melbourne fans have their hearts in their mouths.

3:22pm: WE SHOULD’VE KNOWN

The comeback kings are at it again. Nick Daicos sets up Beau McCreery for a goal and there are 13 points in it – with 12 minutes to go. Can North Melbourne hold on?

3:13pm: KANGAROOS ACTIVATE SUB

A big move by Alastair Clarkson, taking off Will Phillips who has been tagging Nick Daicos.

Jaidyn Stephenson is into the game for the final quarter.

3:10pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME

Just four touches each for George Wardlaw and Luke Davies-Uniacke in the third term, while Nick Daicos had eight including two goals.

Nathan Kreuger also bagged his first goal of the day to move to 25 points.

3:05pm: HOLD THE PHONE

Nick Daicos kicks his second for the term after running down Zac Fisher – then getting a 50m penalty when Tom Powell didn’t return the ball fast enough.

All of a sudden Nick has 91 SuperCoach points and the margin is 29 points.

2:50pm: SURELY NOT

We know Collingwood is the king of the comeback, but even the Pies couldn’t come back from here ... could they?

Nick Daicos gets his first goal of the game to give Collingwood four for the term. The Roos have managed two of their own but Pie fans are starting to sense something brewing.

Daicos has 54 SuperCoach points for the day, edging ahead of his tagger Will Phillips (45).

The Roos have three players over 100 halfway through the third quarter – George Wardlaw, Nick Larkey and Harry Sheezel.

2:40pm: WOODEN SPOON UP FOR GRABS

North’s fantastic start has delivered a shock percentage boost – and the last-placed Roos are closing on 17th-placed Richmond.

The Roos started five points adrift of the two-win Tigers, but the margin is now 0.4 – Richmond has eight points and a percentage of 63.9 and the Roos are sitting on one win (before today) and 63.4.

There are 11 rounds to go but the No.1 draft pick could suddenly be in play.

2:35pm: PIES SUPER SUB

Collingwood has activated its sub with Reef McInnes on for the second half at the expense of Fin Macrae (tactical).

And Reef makes an instant impact with the first goal of the second half.

2:20pm: HALFTIME

One of the upsets of the season – and a lot longer than that, to be honest – is shaping up at Marvel Stadium.

North Melbourne goes into halftime with a 48 point lead after piling on another six goals in the second term to the Magpies’ four.

Nine of the top 10 SuperCoach scorers are in blue and white. Nick Daicos has 41 points, Zac Fisher 45 and Nathan Kreuger 13.

2:05pm: MAYNARD IN TROUBLE?

Brayden Maynard has made a big impact in his 200th game, but not the kind Craig McRae would like.

A big sling tackle on Tom Powell will surely be looked at during the week. It drew a free kick and Powell set up Tristan Xerri for another North Melbourne goal – their 12th in an astonishing day at the footy.

2:02pm: BOBBY!

Collingwood needed a lift, and Bobby Hill answered with a huge hanger at the top of the goalsquare.

He took offand hung on the shoulders of Jackson Archer and Nathan Kreuger to take what will go very close to mark of the year. That was unbelievable!

1:47pm: PIE FIGHTBACK?

Collingwood has the first two goals of the second quarter, the second coming to Will Hoskin-Elliot after an assist from Nathan Kreuger.

The Magpies tall was traded into almost 40,000 teams this week. That’s his second touch for the game, taking him to 13 SuperCoach points.

1:40pm: QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Nick Larkey, George Wardlaw, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Harry Sheezel were all huge in that quarter, and a nod to Zac Fisher who still managed 31 points despite the limited ball in the Kangaroos’ backline.

Nick Daicos has 23 points at the first change.

1:32pm: NORTHBALL!

This is a total domination – and not from the team most of us expected.

Lachie Schultz kicks a goal on the siren – that’s Collingwood’s second.

North Melbourne has eight after its best first quarter in four years, and Nick Larkey has four of them.

Some of the match stats are wild – the Roos lead inside-50s 17-7, total disposals 117-66, centre clearances 7-3 and marks 34-16.

They also have the top eight disposal-winners on the ground led by Luke Davies-Uniacke, Bailey Scott and George Wardlaw who all have 12 touches. Nick Daicos leads the Pies with seven.

What a quarter.

1:20pm: WARLARD RULES

George Wardlaw is absolutely everywhere, adding a goal to go with 11 disposals and four contested possessions.

He shoots to 48 SuperCoach points and North has a four-goal lead.

Make that five as Harry Sheezel joins the party, snapping truly after winning a holding the ball free against debutant Tew Jiath.

1:16pm: LARKEY PARTY

Nick Larkey has three goals in 13 minutes – can he beat Joel Amartey’s haul of nine last night?

He also has 57 SuperCoach points halfway through the first quarter. Paul Curtis has 32, Luke Davies-Uniacke 31 and George Wardlaw 27.

Collingwood has one player above 20 – ruckman Darcy Cameron.

If you’re wondering why Zac Fisher has only six points and popular rookie Nathan Kreuger zero – North Melbourne is leading the inside-50s 12-3. Wow!

1:11pm: ROOS FIRE EARLY

North Melbourne has responded to Collingwood’s early goal with the next three, including two to Nick Larkey who is looking very dangerous against Darcy Moore.

Roos midfielders Luke Davies-Uniacke and George Wardlaw are controlling the middle of the ground – Wardlaw has had eight touches already and LUD has six. Collingwood’s top ballwinner is Nick Daicos with two.

1:02pm: DAICOS TAG

Taggers are back in fashion and it looks like we have another one today – late inclusion Will Phillips has gone straight to Nick Daicos, who had to deal with the attention of Alex Neal-Bullen last Monday.

Meanwhile, Collingwood has the first goal a minute into the game via Bobby Hill.

12:45pm: NEW FACES

Brynn Teakle will play his first game for the Kangaroos today after being snapped up with pick 15 in the mid-season draft.

The 24-year-old big man played six games for Port Adelaide across 2022-23 and if you’re looking for a cheapie in SuperCoach we’re out of luck – he’s priced at $283,900 RUC.

Collingwood also has a debutant today in Tew Jiath, the younger brother of Hawthorn’s Changkuoth. The 19-year-old is a $117,300 DEF in SuperCoach.

Remarkably, he’s the sixth debutant this year for the reigning premier.

12:10pm: FINAL TEAMS: ROOS’ LATE CHANGE

The final team sheets are in and Nick Daicos has been given the green light to take his place in today’s team.

But North Melbourne has made a late change with Jy Simpkin out after his matchwinning performance against West Coast. He has been replaced by Will Phillips.

Reef McInness is Collingwood’s sub while former Pie Jaidyn Stephenson will start as the sub for North Melbourne.
