Are Collingwood’s finals chances over?

The Pies season is on life support after a 20-point loss to Geelong on Friday night at the MCG.

The Cats powered past the Pies in the second half, kicking five of the last seven goals in the contest to win.

Led by Max Holmes, with 27 disposals, and three goals from forward Jeremy Cameron the Cats moved to third with the victory.

Collingwood is now 10th and face being a game outside of the top-eight if results don’t go their way for the weekend.

With a run home which includes matches against Sydney and Carlton, and three other matches against those battling for the top-eight, it is going to be a tough test for the Pies to make it.

IS DAICOS WORTH IT?

More than three quarters of the competition have him but his scoring in the past few weeks would have SuperCoaches seriously considering whether he stays in their side. In three of his past five matches, including Friday night, he has scored under 100 points, which is well below his usual output. He scored 89 on Friday night. With the price he is worth, $603,900, coaches might be thinking of trading him for someone else in better form. Daicos is a major watch right now.

LOCK IN HUMPHRIES

Geelong’s Lawson Humphries is a must-have for coaches. He might rise more than $60,000 dollars this week but his performances in his first two games suggest he is worth it. Last week he got 66 in his first game and scored 118 on Friday. He’s becoming a lock in the Geelong defensive half with his excellent kicking skills. Importantly, his efficiency, will also help his scoring. Just add him for next week.

DEMPSEY CONTINUES TO DELIVER

He might be working towards an AFL Rising Star award but Oliver Dempsey is also scoring nicely in SuperCoach. In the past five rounds he has averaged 94 points and that improves to almost 100 in the last three rounds. On Friday night he scored 91 even though he only had 17 disposals. His 10 marks, one goal and four tackles helped boost his score to another solid hitout. At $422,900, he might be a player to consider, particularly in the forward line with other key SuperCoach players out right now.

10.30pm: SuperCoach wrap

Darcy Cameron was the leading player with 131 points. He had 58 hitouts, kicked a late goal and had 18 disposals. He was one of the best for the night. All up, 10 players scored more than 100 points with six coming from Geelong and four from the Pies. Max Holmes was the best for Geelong with 118 points and despite spending half the final term on the bench Tom Stewart scored 105. 10.20pm: Geelong prevails over Pies

Geelong moves to third on the ladder, for now, after a 20-point win over Collingwood. Collingwood led during the third term but the Cats kicked five of the last seven games to put them in prime position to make finals. As for the Pies, the loss could be a major blow to their finals chances with a tough run home. The Pies could be as low as 12th and a game outside the eight by the end of the round. Score: Cats - 13.13.(91) to Pies - 10.11.(71).

10.16pm: Cats will win

It’s been all Geelong in the final five minutes who have controlled the contest and stifled every Collingwood attack. Tyson Stengle kicks his second for the night and the Cats lead by 26 points. Collingwood now have a major fight on their hands to play finals.

10.12pm: Time is running out

There’s five minutes to go and Collingwood needs four goals with Geelong leading by 19 points. It’s going to take a big effort for the Pies to win from here.

10.05pm: Henry taunts old club

He left the Pies to go down the highway to Geelong and Ollie Henry might have put a dagger in the Pies finals chances this year. The sub snaps a goal from the boundary line and the Cats lead by 18 points. One more goal and this game might be over.

10.03pm: Boost for Geelong

Tom Stewart looks like he is good to return to the field. So he’s either cleared his HIA test or didn’t have one and the injury was near his chest/ribs.

9.59pm: Collingwood sub is activated

Reef McInnes is on for Collingwood. He replaces Lachlan Schultz who went off with concussion earlier this term. The Pies did not take the risk of waiting to see if he cleared the test. McInnes came on straight away.

9.56pm: Injury concerns for both teams

Just as Geelong make their sub, Tom Stewart comes off after a collision involving a few players. Lachlan Schultz is also off following the contest. Both are having concussion tests. The Collingwood sub, Reef McInnes, is warming up.


9.53pm: Pies get the first goal

Steele Sidebottom gets the first goal of the final term and the margin is back to five points. Meanwhile, Geelong has made their sub with Ollie Henry on and Shannon Neale off. The Cats player did suffer a throat injury in the second term but was able to still make a big impact in the second and third quarters. He finished on 38 SuperCoach points after scoring 30 in the first term.

9.50pm: SuperCoach stats

Darcy Cameron is having a big night for Collingwood. He leads SuperCoach with 100 points and has had 44 hitouts alongside 11 disposals. He is 34 clear of the next best player. Geelong’s Max Holmes leads the Cats and is closing on 100 points. He has 98. Nick Daicos has some work to do to get to 100 again. He is currently on 71.

9.43pm: Three quarter time

Two late goals to Geelong has the Cats up by 11 points at the final break. Collingwood had the lead for most of the term and could have extended the margin but the goals to Tyson Stengle and Ollie Dempsey late have hurt. Score: 10.9.(69) to 8.10.(58).

9.40pm: Stengle breaks deadlock

Geelong takes the lead late in third term. Tyson Stengle gets the ball after Geelong run the ball through the middle. He doesn’t get a kick away with the first attempt but makes no mistake as he gets the ball back to kick his first for the night.

9.35pm: Pies holding on

The goals have dried up in the third term as both teams tighten up in defence. Pies lead by one point.

9.25pm: Pies take lead back

Jamie Elliott has been impressive in his return. He take a wonderful leap near the goal square and kicks his second goal for the night. Collingwood has the last two goals of the game and now lead by three points.

9.17pm: Geelong kicks first of the half

Jeremy Cameron kicks the goal of the night and Geelong leads by 10 points. He gets the ball 15 metres out and while being tackled he snaps the ball towards the goal. Cameron has three for the night.

9.10pm: SuperCoach wrap

Will Hoskin-Elliott still leads all players with 63 points. He is quickly being joined by the Daicos brother Nick and Josh (58 and 52 respectively). John Noble is on 58 after having seven disposals and two tackles in the second term. Max Holmes leads the Cats with 61 with Jeremy Cameron going from five at quarter time to 45 at half time after kicking two goals. Scott Pendlebury (35), Jack Crisp (28) and Ollie Dempsey (30) have had tough first halves and will be looking to lift for their teams.

8.52pm: Half time

Geelong leads at half time but Collingwood responded late to reduce the margin to four points. While the Cats dominated the quarter the Pies had chances late to lead at the main break. This contest is close, exactly how many predicted it might be when talking about the match. Score: Cats - 7.6.(48) to Pies 6.8.(44)

8.40pm: Cats back on top

Geelong has kicked four of the five goals this term and leads by 12 points. The Cats are dominating in all the key areas. They lead 10-4 in inside 50s, have had 48 per cent of possession this term and lead overall in contested possessions and disposals.

8.35pm: Neale back on for Cats

Shannon Neale is about to be back on the field after the injury to his throat. He looks set to continue.

8.31pm: Daicos is given all clear

A replay in the broadcast shows Daicos suffered from a corky during the tackle. So there’s no concerns about his hamstring. He should be fine to continue for the rest of the contest.

8:29pm: Neale off for Cats

Shannon Neale has gone off the ground and straight into the change rooms after being hit in the throat during a contest.

8.27pm: Cameron gives Cats lead

Jeremy Cameron kicks two goals in the space of three minutes and Geelong has the lead. Meanwhile there are some concerns about Nick Daicos who felt for his hamstring after being tackled by a Cats player. He is continuing at the moment, but it didn’t look good when it happened.

8.20pm: Hoskin-Elliott’s first quarter charge

Will Hoskin-Elliott was the leading SuperCoach scorer with 51 points in the first quarter. He’s on track for his second 100 points score of the year and has already got his breakeven score. Jamie Elliott in his return game is second for the Pies on 32 points after kicking a goal in the first term. For the Cats the number one player is Shannon Neale with 36 points. He kicked two goals in the first term. Tyson Stengle is second on 32 points. Those who struggled in the first term included Nick Daicos (20), Tom Stewart (19), and Jack Crisp (5).

8.15pm: Pies lead at first change

What a difference 25 minutes make. Geelong made a red-hot start kicking three goals in the opening two minutes of play. Collingwood then kicked the next four goals to take a six-point lead into quarter time. Brad Close had a shot after the siren to make the margin closer but missed for the Cats. Score: 4.5.(29) to 3.5.(23).

7.55pm: Scores level

Collingwood kick two quick goals and scores are level. Credit to the Pies who responded to the early pressure from Geelong. In terms of SuperCoach, Will Hoskin-Elliott leads after kicking the Pies third goal. He has 31. Shannon Neale has 29 SuperCoach points after kicking two goals for the Cats.

7.50pm: Collingwood settles

The Pies have responded to the fast start by the Cats. Patrick Lipinski kicked the first goal of the clash for the Pies and the margin is 12 points.

7.45pm: Geelong are flying

There has only been 111 seconds of game time and the Cats already have three goals on the board. This has been an electric start by the Cats and Collingwood have been smashed in the middle. Key forward Shannon Neale has two goals.

7.40pm: Match underway

The match has started and Geelong immediately get on the scoreboard. Shaun Mannagh takes advantage of a free kick in Geelong’s forward 50 and kicks the first goal of the game after 27 seconds.

7.30pm: History of clash

Geelong might have won seven of the past 11 clashes against the Pies but Collingwood won both clashes last year on their way to the premiership. The team won by 22 in round one before winning by eight later in the season in round 22. Before that Geelong had won the past four, including the semi-final in 2020 and the qualifying final in 2022. This is a game set for Jeremy Cameron. He has kicked 12 goals in his past three clashes, including seven in the last meeting between the two. Nick Daicos had 35 disposals in his last match against Geelong, in round one. He missed the round 22 clash with an injury. It should be a cracking contest between two teams keen to be part of September.

7.10pm: Henry the sub again

Geelong has named Ollie Henry as the sub for the second straight week as it looks to solidify a spot in the top eight. Collingwood has named Reef McInnes as it looks to bounce back into the top eight after a loss to Essendon last week.

The clock is ticking on Collingwood’s hopes of winning back-to-back premierships.

The Magpies enter round 18 outside the top eight on percentage, with three losses from their past five matches, the latest a 12-point defeat to Essendon.

And on Friday night they face a resurgent Geelong, which has jumped to fifth on the ladder with big wins over the Bombers and Hawthorn in the past two weeks.
