AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores from Super Friday, round 21

The Bont might have helped thousands of SuperCoaches get on the front foot in finals with a scintillating performance. He is part of our takeaways from the night. Relive all the action and analysis here.

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 21

The Western Bulldogs have moved into the top-four with a big win over Melbourne to all but end their finals hopes.

The contest was over in the first 20 minutes as the Bulldogs kicked away.

While Melbourne came back at times the Bulldogs overpowered them in the second half, kicking away to win the contest.

It was part of a double-header with West Coast stunning Gold Coast in the other game to win by 10 points.

A final term comeback gave new Eagles coach Jarrad Schofield his first win.

The Suns are still winless away from home this season with their finals chances also slipping away after the loss.

Relive all the updates and our SuperCoach analysis below.

The four takeaways

There will be thousands of SuperCoach anxiety hoping the 182 points scored by Marcus Bontempelli doesn’t either eliminate them or cost them victory in qualifying finals. Especially if rival coaches made him captain. His game was extraordinary with 33 disposals, eight marks, five tackles and two goals. You can almost certainly hand him the three Brownlow votes for his night out. The Bulldogs captain is a must-have after his performance tonight and has scored 100 or more points in eight of his past nine games.

Ruck options might be worth the risk

Max Gawn and Jarrod Witts both proved tonight they can play a major role in SuperCoach in the next few weeks. But only if they are fit. Gawn scored 130 points and was the Demons best scorer. Witts, in his second game back from injury, scored 161 points to be the best player in the West Coast and Gold Coast game. If fit, both are handy options, but that is the risk. Gawn still didn’t look 100 per cent against the Bulldogs with Witts coming back from a bad back injury. If I was siding with one player it would be Witts. He looked back to his full fitness tonight and is only going to get better in that department with more games. Could be a very handy player in the next three weeks.

Time to trade Harley Reid

Currently 32 per cent of SuperCoaches have the number one draft pick from last year in their team. At this crucial time of the year you want players scoring large points and being the difference between winning and losing. Reid is not going to do that, not in the next three games at least. He only scored 68 points tonight and hasn’t scored more than 82 since round 10. While he’ll be a star in the next few years, it might be time to trade him for someone else to win SuperCoach.

Ugle-Hagan continues to shine

In the rise of the Bulldogs the past few weeks, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has also lifted his game and helped his SuperCoach score. He scored 108 points on Friday night, which could have been more if he kicked straight, and is averaging more than 100 in his past four games. If the Bulldogs resurgence continues, which it could with their run home, the forward could be a handy option in the forward line. Especially against Adelaide next week, who have a habit of conceding goals to forwards.

LIVE UPDATES

11.15pm: Eagles rock

The West Coast Eagles win a classic over the Gold Coast Suns by 10 points. Jarrod Schofield has his first win as coach while the Suns once again are winless away from home this season. What a contest. Score: West Coast Eagles 15.7. (97) to Gold Coast Suns 13.9. (87).

11.10pm: Eagles kick another

Eagles win the contest and get inside their 50. Jamie Cripps has the ball near the boundary line, on the left side, and checkside kicks the ball and kicks a goal. Eagles lead by 10 points with just under three minutes to go.

Liam Duggan take a bow. He gets the ball from a ruck tap inside 50 and quickly snaps a shot on goal. It’s straight through the middle and the Eagles lead by four points.

11.06pm: Next goal might win the game

Margin is two points with four minutes to go. All the momentum is with West Coast but Gold Coast is holding on to the lead.

11.03pm: Reid injured

And while that happens Harley Reid dislocates a finger. He is off the field getting treatment for it but should be able to get back on the ground.

11pm: Pressure is on

This is a cracking contest as both sides are trying to get over the line. Massive tackles, a lot of stoppages and hardly any players winning a free football. The margin is one point with the Suns leading.

10.55pm: Suns still lead

Ben King kicks his third goal of the game to extend the margin to nine points but the Eagles respond. Liam Ryan snaps a goal and the margin is back to three points with just over 12 minutes to go.

10.50pm: Close game alert

Eagles forward Jake Waterman kicks his fourth goal for the night and the margin is less than one goal. Jack Darling had a chance to give the Eagles the lead but missed. The margin is three points.

10.43pm: Gold Coast makes their sub

Suns defender Joel Jeffrey has been subbed out of the match. He is replaced by Malcolm Rosas Jr.

10.36pm: Three quarter time in Suns and Eagles contest

And we have a game at the final break. Eagles forward Jake Waterman snaps a goal right on the siren and West Coast is nine points behind at the final break. This contest could go either way in the final term. Score: Suns 12.7. (79) to Eagles 11.4. (70).

10,30pm: Gold Coast kicks away

This has been a good five minutes from Gold Coast. The Suns have kicked the past three to now lead by 16 points. The side has composed themselves well after the Eagles got on top during the term. The final goal, kicked by Brayden Fiorini, was scored after a contentious call in the Suns' 50. He won a free kick after he was held in the contest by an Eagles defender. The commentators were adamant it wasn’t a hold but the replays clearly showed Fiorini was grabbed at, despite the Eagles player also using it to apply pressure to mark the ball in the contest.

10.25pm: Suns back in front

Ben King kicks his second of the night and Gold Coast leads by four points. He will be a challenge to the Eagles for the rest of the night with his direct opponent from earlier, Harry Edwards, off the ground and subbed out of the game. Jeremy McGovern is now on him and Clay Hall is on the ground for Edwards.

10.22pm: West Coast takes the lead

Four goals in a row for the Eagles has them in the lead and on top in the contest. The Eagles have dominated in the middle and are making it count. Their pressure is also at 195, which is far higher than the Suns.

10.13pm: Eagles coming back

The third quarter is underway and West Coast has fought back from 22 points down in the early stages of the third term to bring the margin back to 10 points. This is an important 10 minutes in the contest.

10.05pm: SuperCoach wrap

Marcus Bontempelli got to 182 SuperCoach points, 18 short of the 200 milestone. He was one of nine Bulldogs players to score more than 100 points in the match. The next best was Adam Treloar on 149 points. Max Gawn was the best for the Demons with 130. A full wrap will be done above in the takeaways.

(120) to Demons 9.5. (59).

9.27pm: Sub made for Bulldogs

Tom Liberatore has been taken off for the Bulldogs with Caleb Daniel to replace him. The change was made at the final break.

9.25pm: SuperCoach update final break – Dogs v Demons

Marcus Bontempelli needs 44 points in the final term to score 200 SuperCoach points in the game. Can he do it? He is one of two players to score 100 points in the game with Adam Treloar on 114 in his 250th match. Max Gawn is the best for the Demons with 92 and is on track for a 100 plus point game. Others to shine include Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (85), Tom Liberatore (85) and Trent Rivers (69).

9.20pm: Dogs in commanding lead at final change

The Western Bulldogs kicked away in the third term and have full control of the contest. The Dogs kicked five goals to two to open up a 38-point lead at three-quarter-time. It’s going to be tough for the Demons to come back from here. Score: Dogs – 11.17. (83) to Demons – 7.3. (45).

9.10pm: SuperCoach update first quarter – Eagles v Suns

Eagles duo Elliot Yeo and Alex Witherden lead all players in SuperCoach with 43 points each in the first term. Jack Darling is the next best on 39 after kicking one goal and getting six disposals. The best for the Suns was Noah Anderson with 37.

9.04pm: Poulter magic extends margin

Caleb Poulter gets an incredibly lucky bounce as he has a shot on goal from 55 metres out. It turns at left angles and beats the Melbourne defenders to go through for a goal. The Bulldogs lead by the largest margin of the night, which is now 41 points.

8.59pm: The 200-point game is alive

Marcus Bontempelli kicks his second goal of the game and he has now scored more than 150 SuperCoach points in the game. He’s had 26 disposals in the game and has every chance of scoring 200 points tonight.

8.54pm: Sub made for Demons

Steven May is now out of the game for the Demons with sore ribs. He has been replaced by Daniel Turner.

8.51pm: Dogs kick away

The Western Bulldogs kick the first three goals of the second half and the margin is now out to 36 points. After being inaccurate in the first half the team has responded with three straight goals to start the third term.

8.47pm: Game stopped momentarily at Optus Stadium

Ben King is in the hands of trainers after being involved in a heavy collision, in a marking contest, with West Coast Eagles player Harry Edwards. King stayed on the ground for a couple of seconds but has been able to get up and walk off the ground. Highly likely he is done for the game after getting a head knock. The game was stopped for a minute but has now continued.

8.42pm: May still in doubt to return

Steven May may not play a part in the rest of the match. He is off the ground with sore ribs so the decision will be left to him and the doctor. At this stage the sub has not been made.

8.20pm: Fritsch reduced margin more

Bailey Fritsch kicks his 250th goal in the AFL and the margin is 16 points. The Demons are coming back.

8.18pm: Demons staying alive

7.50pm: SuperCoach first quarter update

It’s been a strong start by the Bulldogs and that’s been reflective in the SuperCoach scores. Nine of the first 10 players in the list are Bulldogs players. The leader is Marcus Bontempelli who had a monster first quarter with 75 points. He is 30 points clear of the next player. Steven May, who is on 45 points, is the next best and the best Demon in the contest. The Bulldogs then dominate the rest with Rory Lobb (40), Bailey Williams (39) and Tom Liberatore (36) rounding out the top five.
