AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores from Super Sunday, round 20
Nick Daicos returned to form while a number of SuperCoach studs flopped in a boilover. Discover the takeaways and relive all the action and analysis.
SuperCoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Hawthorn has continued its tremendous surge towards the top-eight with an emphatic annihilation of the Crows who held goalless for the majority of the second half.
The Hawks are so close to the top eight they can touch it. ‘
At the SCG, Sydney was stunned by the high-flying Dogs on their own turf as the away side clinched eighth spot, while Collingwood kept its slim finals hopes alive with defeat of Richmond.
Relive all the updates and SuperCoach analysis below.
The three takeaways
DAICOS DELIGHT
Nick Daicos was due. After a subdued few weeks by his elite standards, Daicos was primed for a big game and Adem Yze went into Sunday’s MCG clash with the questionable tactic of letting him run around apparently without an opponent in the first quarter.
Eighteen disposals later and the Tigers coaching box reassessed and tasked a combination of Liam Baker and Jacob Hopper with watching Daicos at stoppages while youngster Seth Campbell had the job of running around after him after that.
They were able to slow him down from his world record pace, but 42 touches and 147 points was instrumental in the Pies’ first win since round 14.
SWANS STAY HOME
What odds could you have got early on Sunday of just one Sydney player topping 100 SuperCoach points against the Bulldogs - and that player being Matt Roberts?
The Swans didn’t kick a goal until the second quarter and were never in the hunt in front of a stunned home crowd, with two Isaac Heeney shots at goal in the final term summing up their day. The first, a rushed snap under pressure, missed everything. The second, following a strong mark directly in front of goal, nearly missed everything, sneaking in for a behind.
Chad Warner’s day was even worse - just 11 touches for 38 SuperCoach points. Even SCG specialist Brodie Grundy couldn’t crack three figures.
POD ANYONE?
If there’s anyone with trades to spare - unlikely, I know - looking for a reliable point of difference midfield option for the run home, Hawthorn’s Will Day could be your man. He was arguably Hawthorn’s best in their Adelaide demolition job and topped the SuperCoach scoring with his 136-point effort.
Day sits in less than 5000 SuperCoach teams and has only dropped below the three figures once since round 10. Given the inconsistent showings plenty of top-line midfielders have dished up this season, you could do far worse. That stretch now includes three scores in excess of 130 and he hasn’t dropped below 92.
He’s priced at $543,800 and had a hefty breakeven of 121 so his price jump will be minimal.
6:50pm: 66-POINT WIN FOR HAWKS
That was a second half demolition as brutal as they come. The Hawks are loving their footy as they notch their 10th win from 12 games. Finals is no longer a distant long shot as they move up to ninth spot on the AFL ladder.
Turning to SuperCoach, Will Day remained the game’s leading point-scorer despite a quiet last term to finish with 136. Reilly O’Brien was also immense in the ruck for the Crows with 124 points, as was Rory Laird who finished with 116.
Popular forward Dylan Moore fell just shy of the ton with 96 points.
Crows rookie Billy Dowling was okay with 69 points, while Massimo D’Ambrosio’s 57 well below his best.
Hawks defender James Sicily was also quiet with 119 points.
6:48pm: TEX BREAKS DUCK
Adelaide has avoided its first goalless second half in history after Taylor Walker converted a set shot late. He shared some choice words with Jack Ginnivan in the aftermath and the pair appeared fired up. Ginnivan kicked two goals for the day.
6:44pm: SUPERB MACDONALD
After his four-goal effort last week, Hawthorn’s Connor MacDonald has enjoyed another brilliant game. With a few minutes to play he has two goals, 28 disposals, and a whopping 14 score involvements. It comes after he booted four for the Hawks in their demolition of Collingwood last week
6:39pm: TEMPERS FLARE
Tempers have flared at the Adelaide Oval as an all-in scuffle broke out when Adelaide’s Max Michalanney forcefully struck Dylan Moore in the sternum with an open palm.
James Sicily was ultimately awarded a free kick in front of goal and converted to extend the Hawks’ lead to 69 points. The Crows frustrations are understandable given they remain yet to kick a goal in the second half.
It's all boiling over for the Crows after staring down at a goalless second half.

6:21pm: HAWKS ACTIVATE SUB
Hawthorn has pulled a tactical sub with Luke Breust taken out of the game to make way for Finn Maginness as the final term gets underway.
6:13pm: 3QT AS HAWKS BLITZ CROWS
Adelaide was dominated by Hawthorn that quarter and could only register two points.
In SuperCoach, Will Day continues to lead the way with an emphatic 115-point total to reward his 2.6 per cent of owners.
Adelaide midfielder Rory Laird is also having a great game with 85 points to his name.
Crow rookie Billy Dowling is on track for an okay score for those - like me - relying on some cover for the absent Zac Fisher up forward. He has 48 points.
Hawthorn’s Massimo D’Ambrosio has been well below his best with just 36 points. James Sicily is another player that has struggled with the skipper on just 39 points.
Dylan Moore remained exactly on par for a ton as his score crept up to 75 points with a 25-point quarter.
6:09pm: SHARING IT AROUND
Hawthorn has kicked 13 goals and lead the Crows by 43 points in the third quarter and they’ve already has 10 different goal-scorers. Nick Watson, Jai Newcombe and Luke Breust have all kicked two majors but there has been a very even spread as seven others have kicked one.
It’s been a brilliant quarter from Hawthorn who have blown Adelaide out of the water this half. The Crows have just two points for the quarter as three-quarter-time nears.
6:02pm: CROWS ACTIVATE SUB
Elliott Himmelberg has been pulled out of the game by the Adelaide Crows as they activate their sub. It means Dan Curtin has been injected into the game. Himmelberg had had a quiet outing with just one mark and three touches in over a half of footy.
6:00pm: DOGS WIN
The Bulldogs are back in the eight and the Swans are suddenly looking wobbly after a fourth loss in their past five games, and another injury - to defender Lewis Melican.
Adam Treloar continued his brilliant season while Matt Roberts was the only Swan above 100. Even SCG specialist Brodie Grundy fell just short of three figures.
5:51pm: MOSQUITO FLEET FIRES
Blink and you’ll miss it. Just like that, Hawthorn leads the Crows by 35 points on their own turf. Polarising small forwards Jack Ginnivan and Nick Watson kicked the past two goals in as many minutes.
Ginnivan has had a quiet outing in comparison with his career-best 32-disposal effort against the Pies last week, but bobbed up in acres of space in the forward 50 to mark and convert.
The major was followed by Nick Watson’s goal, however Mabior Chol appeared to incorrectly dispose of the ball in the lead-up and the Adelaide Oval crowd voiced their displeasure, erupting into a chorus of boos.
5:48pm: RONALDO-INSPIRED CELEBRATION
As football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo so often has, Jarman Impey captured the attention of the stadium with a storming run up the guts of Adelaide Oval and deadeye conversion of the run. He followed the effort by adopting Ronaldo’s renowned ‘suiii’ celebration. Hawthorn now leads by 23.

5:44pm: WHERE ARE SYDNEY STARS?
It’s remarkable Sydney has kicked just five goals to midway through the fourth quarter, and some big SuperCoach names have been very quiet. Isaac Heeney has had 25 disposals but hasn’t hit the scoreboard and sits on 70 SuperCoach points. Chad Warner has 10 touches and 34 SuperCoach points - 20 fewer than his brother Corey who is playing his seventh AFL game.
5:25pm: HALF-TIME AT ADELAIDE OVAL
The Hawks pulled away late in the half to take a 15-point lead into the break, but it’s been a gripping between them and the Crows.
Will Day has been superb with a side-stepping goal the highlights of his 14 disposals. As such he leads the SuperCoach scoring by some margin with 88 points to his name.
Despite the ruck carnage as of late, Adelaide’s Reilly O’Brien is in just 0.8 per cent of teams but he also had a monster first half with 72 SuperCoach points.
Massimo D’Ambrosio started very slowly and was on just one point some way into the second term, however he rallied late to jump to 22 points. Another popular Hawk in Dylan Moore continued on from his solid start to the game to sit on 50 points.
Ben Keays is also shaping as a point of difference option for those searching for forward options after his monster score of 158 following his five-goal haul last week. He sits on 53 points and is in just one per cent of teams.
5:21pm: THREE-QUARTER-TIME AT SCG
It’s going to take a miracle for the Swans to win this one.The Dogs added another five goals in the third term to Sydney’s two, with Adam Treloar (29 disposals) and Marcus Bontempelli (19, five score involvements) leading the charge.
Matt Roberts is having some sort of game for the Swans, he has 28 touches already at 86 per cent efficiency.

5:14pm: TOUCHED CONFUSION
That one was confusing.
Hawks defender Jack Scrimshaw out marked Elliott Himmelberg in the defensive 50, but neither player could hear the umpires call of touched off the boot well upfield and played as if Scrimshaw had taken the mark. The umpire then intervened by stopping play and calling for a ball up.
5:11pm: HAWKS RUN HOT
Will Day. We all know he’s a serious player and that was a serious goal. He turned Adelaide’s Luke Nankervis into a witches hat as he danced around before launching the Sherrin through the sticks from just inside the 50m arc. The Hawks now have a seven-point lead.
How good was the dance step from Will Day? ðº

5:06pm: D’AMBROSIO UNSIGHTED
Massimo D’Ambrosio has had a very quiet start to the Crows clash against Hawthorn. Halfway through the second term D’Ambrosio sit on just one SuperCoach point and has only had one touch of the footy. The Hawk still sits in over 16 per cent of SuperCoach teams.
5:03pm: CROWS BACK IN FRONT
Adelaide is back in front of Hawthorn at the Adelaide Oval in a tense see-sawing affair at Adelaide Oval. The Hawks briefly hit the lead after a Jai Newcombe goal but the advantage lasted less than two minutes before Rachele hit back for the Crows.
4:46pm: QUARTER-TIME IN ADELAIDE
A great response from the Crows after Hawthorn jumped out of the blocks, but fans weren’t happy with a score review just before the break. The ARC ruled his kick off the ground in the goalsquare came off Billy Dowling’s leg above the knee.
Crows fans were left wanting after this review didn't go their way

4:33pm: KEAYS TO SUPERCOACH SUCCESS?
Ben Keays has hit form in the past month, averaging 123 SuperCoach points a game, and he has his first goal of the game here to jump to 24 points late in the first quarter.
Almost 3000 coaches jumped on before this round at a bargain price of $490k.
Lloyd Meek (42) and Jake Soligo (40) lead the game while Dylan Moore (26) has also started well.

4:29pm: HALFTIME
The Bulldogs steadied after Sydney threatened early in the second term, eventually winning the quarter 2.2 to 2.0.
Matt Roberts has 20 disposals while Marcus Bontempelli has eight contested possessions among his 13 touches.
Popular picks Isaac Heeney (40 points), Tim English (41) and Bailey Dale (34) are just off the pace at halftime.
4:20pm: HAWK VETERAN STRIKES
Luke Breust has become a regular sub for Hawthorn this season but he is starting today after booting four goals against Collingwood – and he has the first two goals against the Crows.
He skips to 29 SuperCoach points while Reilly O’Brien leads the Crows with 30 in the early stages at Adelaide Oval.

4:12pm: SWANS SUB PARKER ON
Luke Parker has taken off his tracksuit top as the Swans sub out injured defender Lewis Melican.
SuperCoach check-in – Matt Roberts has put in a stunning first quarter and a half to rack up 71 points while Marcus Bontempelli has 50 and SCG specialist Brodie Grundy 49.
Isaac Heeney (41) and Errol Gulden (37) have been good while owners would be hoping for a lift from Tim English (30) and Bailey Dale (28).
4:08pm: SWANS AWAKE?
Sydney trailed 5.5 to 0.1 at quarter-time but the Swans have the first two goals of the second quarter, thorough Will Hayward and Hayden McLean, to bring the SCG crowd to life.
Sydney gave up a five-goal start against Brisbane last week but hit the lead before halftime, can they repeat that today?
3:54pm: PIES WIN
Collingwood has snapped a four-match losing streak but are the Pies back in the finals mix? Let’s wait until they face Carlton next week to make a call. They made a fast start against an undermanned Richmond to lead by 24 points at quarter-time, and ended up winning by 26.
Nick Daicos had 18 disposals at quarter-time and finished with 42.
3:48pm: ANOTHER SWANS SLOW START
Sydney’s slow starts could be costing them again. The Western Bulldogs have a 28-point lead over the Swans with five minutes to go in the first quarter after Caleb Poulter goaled from the pocket.
The Bulldogs are doing what they want in the front third of the ground, with loose men all over the ground. Meanwhile up forward, the Swans have a solitary point on the board and won’t look like scoring at all.
3:45pm: TIGER SILVER LINING
It’s been a pretty rough day for Richmond but the Tigers might have found a forward in youngster Tom Brown. He has played in the backline early in his career but switched forward in recent weeks and has bagged three goals today, including his first in the AFL.
3:35pm: DOGS MAKE FLYING START
Ed Richards has just kicked the Western Bulldogs’ second goal at the SCG, and the Dogs are dominating the opening nine minutes against the premiership favourites.
Richards is receiving attention from James Jordon but won a free kick at a stoppage to have a shot from 50.
The Bulldogs have had six shots on goal and dominated possession, shell-shocking the Swans. Plenty of wind is affecting kicking across the ground, though.
3:25pm: PIES PUT PENDLES ON ICE
Scott Pendlebury has been subbed off to keep him fresh for game 400 next week. Lachie Sullivan is into the game.
A minute later Harvey Harrison leaves the field after a clash of heads with Jacob Hopper.
3:22pm: CROWS’ LATE CHANGE
Adelaide has made a late change for its clash with Hawthorn.
Defender Brodie Smith will miss with illness with top draftee Dan Curtin to come into the side.
But while plenty of Crows fans have been crying out for Curtin to get a run in the AFL side as Adelaide looks to 2025, the No. 8 draft pick will begin the game as the sub.
– Simeon Thomas-Wilson
3:15pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME
Can Nick Daicos catch Harry Sheezel? That’s the main interest in the final term at the MCG from a SuperCoach point of view – he needs another 41 points. Seth Campbell did a reasonable job that quarter.
Scott Pendlebury going OK in game 399!
3:05pm: TARANTO SUBBED
Richmond has subbed out Tim Taranto with what looks like a back injury. He has been unusually quiet today with just 11 touches.
Thomson Dow comes into the game closing on three quarter-time.
3:00pm: LOOK OUT, SHAI!
Not a whole lot happening in the third term with Collingwood extending its lead.
Dan McStay has three goals and Bobby Hill delivered this highlight.

2:50pm: PIES’ KILLER STAT
One stat that tells the tale of today’s game – Collingwood leads inside-50 marks 13-2.
Every time they go forward the Pies have a range of dangerous targets to kick to, while the Tigers are playing Kamdyn McIntosh at full-forward.
Efficiency inside-50 isn’t helping Richmond, either – the Tigers have kicked 0.4 in the third term and 5.8 for the match.
2:45pm: FINAL TEAMS FOR SWANS v DOGS
There are no late changes for the second Sunday game.
Luke Parker will start as Sydney’s subs while Caleb Daniel is sub for the Bulldogs.
2:34pm: HALFTIME
Nick Daicos falls just short of cracking the ton in a half, but he’s on for an absolutely massive score.
Jayden Short having a huge day, too. He has 19 touches at 95 per cent efficiency.
2:18pm: MASSIVE JOB FOR TIGER CUB
It looks like young forward Seth Campbell is now running with Nick Daicos.
Campbell has played 16 games, kicking nine goals, including one today. He is known as one of Richmond’s best endurance runners but this is on a whole new level.
2:07pm: NICK STILL RACKING IT UP
The early evidence is the Liam Baker move has slowed Daicos down ... a tiny bit.
Here are the leading disposal winners on the ground midway through the second quarter:
24 – Nick Daicos
15 – Scott Pendlebury, Daniel Rioli
13 – Jayden Short, Jack Bytel
12 – Josh Daicos
1:58pm: TIGERS MAKE DAICOS MOVE
It looks like Liam Baker has gone to Nick Daicos after his rampant first term. Can he put the brakes on a potential 50-plus disposal performance?
1:45pm: QUARTER-TIME
Nick Daicos has brought his own footy to the MCG today.
He has a ridiculous 18 disposals at quarter-time and is doing as he pleases – Nathan Buckley and Jack Riewoldt in the Fox Footy commentary box have called on Adem Yze to try something to rein in the Pies superstar.
Jack Riewoldt: “Someone’s got to go to him ... look at those stats, 18 disposals, 10 of those contested, seven score involvements.”
It’s happy days for those with the C on him in SuperCoach – he already has 68 points to his name.
Magpies are dominating pretty much everywhere with the only two Richmond playes in the top 10 both playing in the defensive 50.
1:27pm: TIGERS GET CREATIVE
With Toby Nankervis (concussion) out, Samson Ryan and Jacob Koschitzke are sharing ruck duties for Richmond.
Kamdyn McIntosh is playing as a key forward, and he should hae cashed in after marking 20m out – but his snap shot was touched on the mark by Mason Cox.
Less than a minute later we have another lengthy goal review at the other end. Both came back from the ARC as ‘umpire’s call’ – which both fell in Collingwood’s favour as Will Hoskin-Elliott is credited with a dribbed goal past several Tiger defenders.
1:22pm: NICK’S POSITIVE START
Almost 15 per cent of SuperCoaches ranked in the top 10 per cent are banking on a big captaincy score from Nick Daicos today.
He has five disposals early – second-most on the ground behind Tiger Nick Vlastuin, a score assist after a perfect pass inside 50 to Bobby Hill (who missed, and 21 SuperCoach points.
1:11pm: PIES’ PERFECT START
The first goal of the game goes to Collingwood via champion Scott Pendlebury inside the first minute. Dustin Martin is here – he’s watching from the Tigers’ coaches box.
1:05pm: WHAT’S AT STAKE
The Pies simply have to win today to have any hope of playing finals. And they probably need other results to go there way now, too.
12:30pm: MAGPIES MAKE LATE CHANGE
Final teams are in and there is a late change for Collingwood, with Joe Richards (illness) out. He has been replaced by Lachie Sullivan.
Richards was a late in for Jordan De Goey (groin), who was withdrawn from the team on Saturday.
Sullivan will start as the Magpies’ sub.
Richmond will go in as named, with Thomson Dow as the sub.
