AFL 2024: Re-live the updates and SuperCoach scores from Geelong’s win over Adelaide

Geelong star Tom Stewart has produced a record-equalling night in defence for the Cats as they shoved Adelaide to a 0-2 start. Catch all the SuperCoach details here.

Pitch invader disrupts AFL game

Milestone man Tom Stewart — in his 150th match — has taken a record-equalling 10 intercept marks to guide Geelong to a second win in as many weeks.

Adelaide had its chances, particularly when it took the lead in the third term, but failed to make the most of them.

It means the Crows have fallen to a 0-2 start with Fremantle in Perth on the horizon.

Rookies Shaun Mannagh and Jhye Clark showed their worth in your SuperCoach sides while Gryan Miers also produced a superb night.

10:26: FT — STEWART STEERS CATS TO WIN OVER CROWS

Tom Stewart has referred to himself as “one of the lucky ones” when asked about his journey to 150 games.

Stewart delivered one of his best performances yet with a record-equalling 10 intercept marks to defeat the Crows.

Jeremy Cameron lauded the star defender by saying “it honestly felt like there were three or four of him tonight” in Channel 7’s post game.

Gryan Miers joined Stewart with an outstanding night while Adelaide’s Matt Crouch found the footy 38 times.

10:22: GRYAN CALLS GAME

Gryan Miers has capped off his strong night with a match-sealing major.

The ball was in the Crows’ forward half for several minutes before the Cats found a way to slingshot.

Miers has recorded 117 SuperCoach points.

10:13: FOGARTY’S ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ MISS

Darcy Fogarty has missed such an easy opportunity, commentator Brian Taylor referred to the goal as “impossible” to miss.

Running into an open goal, Fogarty, who has had a good night, tried to nurse it through but smacked it into the post.

A goal would have brought the Crows back within nine points with six minutes left.

10:11: CATS CHEW CLOCK

Geelong has used all its experience to shave time off the clock in this fourth quarter.

Time is now an additional enemy to Adelaide, which trails by 22 points with seven minutes left in the game.

Tom Stewart is still having his way with the hosts, with 121 SuperCoach points.

9:59: TEX LIFTS CROWS

Adelaide forward Taylor Walker has kicked the Crows back within 19 points early in the fourth quarter.

He took a strong mark over Jack Henry before converting neatly.

It wasn’t without its question however, with the umpire sending it upstairs to continue the trend of the night.

9:48: 3QT — CROWS SQUANDER THIRD-QUARTER LEAD

Adelaide will need to produce a final term similar to last week after squandering its chances during the third quarter.

After hitting the front, Adelaide conceded a handful of goals to gift the Cats a 24-point three-quarter time lead.

Defender Jordon Butts had an opportunity to kick the Crows within three goals after the siren but shanked the kick across the face.

A big quarter from Cats champion Tom Hawkins has him as the only player with 100 SuperCoach points to the final change.

 9:39: STEWART FUMBLES MOTY

After Ben Keays dropped a pitch invader, Tom Stewart has dropped Mark of the Year.

The Cat couldn’t have had a better ride but the Sherrin slipped through his hands at the final second.

9:33: BEN KEAYS DROPS AN INTRUDER

By Matt Turner

Play was halted with 7.34 remaining in the third term when a spectator ran onto the field inside 50 at the northern end.

The man weaved in between players very close to the ball in Geelong’s forward line while the game was going while seemingly filming on his phone.

Adelaide midfielder Matt Crouch tried to stop him before he ran away from a security guard.

Finally, he was brought down by Crow Ben Keays and then jumped on by security.

“Outside of anything, the occupational health and safety issue that players have got no idea that a member of the crowd is suddenly moving around in the middle of frenetic play,” James Brayshaw said on Channel 7.

9:27: SHARP-SHOOTING CATS

Geelong is making the most of its chances tonight, kicking a perfect seven from seven on set shots.

Tom Hawkins has contributed three of that seven, including the past two to propel the Cats back up by nine points.

9:23: CROWS TAKE LEAD

Adelaide has taken the lead through a clever goal from livewire Izak Rankine.

The Crows have kicked six of the past eight majors in a dominant patch of footy.

9:14: DON’T ARGUE WITH DARCY

Darcy Fogarty has produced his best Dustin Martin impression with a fierce don’t argue before snapping his second goal.

He pushed off Oisin Mullin with ease to put the Crows within a kick.

8:58: EMERGENCE OF BURGESS

Despite Tom Stewart’s dominance, Adelaide forward Chris Burges has had a strong first half in his second game as a Crow.

The former Gold Coast Sun has two first-half goals and realistically should have a third, hitting the post from point-blank range during the second quarter.

As a forward option in your SuperCoach side, Burgess — who has 40 points to half time — costs just $129,100 and has a break even of 15.

8:53: HT — CROWS WITHSTAND CATS’ EARLY BLITZ

Adelaide has responded after an early Geelong blitz to trail by 12 points at half time.

The Crows were down by 26 points late in the first term but returned serve with a succession of goals of their own.

They got within eight points before a late Cats major.

Despite winning the term, the Crows will go into the main break disappointed with the margin after bombarding the Cats with inside 50s late in the second quarter.

Tom Stewart remains a thorn in the Crows’ forward line with six intercept marks while rookies Shaun Mannagh and Jhye Clark have had a great half.

8:41: SUPERCOACH ROOKIES LIGHT UP SECOND STANZA

Geelong rookies Shaun Mannagh and Jhye Clark are putting their best foot forward in a super second quarter.

Mannagh has registered 37 SuperCoach points late in the half while Clark has 30.

The pair are the two highest-owned players in this game.

Clark is owned by 56.9 per cent of coaches by Mannagh is in 36 per cent of teams.

8:31: STANLEY HAS RETURNED

After leaving the field early in the game, Geelong big man Rhys Stanley has escaped injury.

He has returned to the field to add nine hit outs in short time.

8:28: CROWS LAND BACK-TO-BACK GOALS

Including Josh Rachele’s goal after the quarter-time siren, Darcy Fogarty’s ever-reliable set-shot goal kicking has made it successive goals for the hosts.

After falling out to a 25-point deficit, the Crows are back in the game.

8:17: QT - STEWART MAKES SIZZLING START

Geelong has taken a 19-point lead into the first change, largely off the back of the rock-solid opening term from star defender Tom Stewart.

Stewart has seven touches and four marks for the return of 44 SuperCoach points.

Gryan Miers is the only player on the ground to have more with 47.

Rookie Shaun Mannagh has justified his selection in the starting side with an impressive 38 to quarter time.

8:06: MORE MADNESS AT AO

Adelaide Oval has been the scene for umpiring question marks as of late and tonight’s first quarter is no exception.

A far-too-long goal review was held at the end of Ben Keays’ now infamous goal, perplexing us all, including Channel 7’s Brian Taylor.

“That was 1.12 to get a result that was clearly obvious from a couple of angles,” Taylor declared.

8:01: STEWART CREATES HEADACHE FOR NICKS

Matthew Nicks recognised Tom Stewart as a major concern for the Crows pre-game and revealed his plan to send Luke Pedlar to the star defender in a tagging role.

It’s fair to say that tag is not working as Stewart already has five touches, four marks — three of those intercepts — and 37 SuperCoach points.

Pedlar, meanwhile, is yet to touch the football.

7:58: MANNAGH MAKES HIS MARK

Geelong rookie Shaun Mannagh has got majority of SuperCoaches out of their seats with his maiden AFL goal.

After starting as the substitute against St Kilda, Mannagh was upgraded this week and has kicked truly early.

He has 26 SuperCoach points late in the first term.

7:51: STANLEY BEING CHECKED

Geelong ruckman Rhys Stanley has gone down into the rooms after hobbling off with a leg injury.

He left the field clutching at his left knee after winning three early hit outs.

7:47: THEY HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN

Patrick Dangerfield has only had a couple of early possessions but the Adelaide army have noticed every one of them, booing the eight-time All Australian.

He’s played more games as a Cat than he did as a Crow but the Adelaide supporters haven’t forgotten.

7:20: PEDLAR TO TAG STEWART

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks plans to send Luke Pedlar to Geelong star Tom Stewart in a run-with role.

Nicks told the Fox Footy panel pre-game the Crows “want him to walk off where it’s not so positive for him”.

“We’ll set up to make sure they don’t take too much shape off us,” Nicks said.

“We’ll look at Stewart so we’ll put a lot of time into him, we know it’s his 150th but we want him to walk off where it’s not so positive for him.

“We want to give them no time ... it’ll be a front-half pressure game. Peds, he’s done it before. he’s got some more experience under his belt now”

Despite being highly owned, Stewart holds a break even of 133.

7:04: SLOANE UPDATE

Adelaide is giving Rory Sloane as much time as he needs to recover from his eye setback, according to Jon Ralph.

Ralph reported Sloane has a decision make on retiring or taking the risk of further damage after a second retina detachment.

Sloane is trialling goggles to get more peripheral vision.

Ralph also reported major injury and tribunal news from St Kilda’s win over Collingwood.

6:45: FINAL TEAMS, CATS HIT WITH LATE OUT

Geelong stars Mitch Duncan and Tom Atkins are late outs from tonight’s clash with Adelaide due to personal reasons.

Brandan Parfitt has come into the side while Mitch Knevitt will be the Cats’ substitute.

The Crows will go in as selected with Ned McHenry as sub.
