Stuart Dew reveals when the Gold Coast Suns will crown new AFL captain

Suns coach Stuart Dew has revealed when the club will crown their newest captain and if two will share the role as Tom Lynch and Steven May did.

THE Suns will crown a new skipper within the next month with coach Stuart Dew declaring they are undecided if they will continue to operate with the co-captains model from last year.

Dew said the club would begin the process of finding the replacement of departed captains Tom Lynch and Steven May in the coming weeks in the lead up to their preseason games, starting on March 3 against the Western Bulldogs.

“We will work through that through the back end of February,” Dew said of the leadership search.

“We have had a big change and have seen two captains depart so we are giving everyone a fair chance to show their leadership wares.”

Four members of last year’s leadership group remain at the club including Touk Miller, David Swallow, Jarrod Witts and Pearce Hanley and they are considered among the frontrunners for the role.

“History suggests that it will come from within that group,” Dew said.

“We still have a process to go through but we have some good leadership experience. There are certainly benefits of having co-captains. There is a greater demand off field at football clubs and it helps in that space.

“We are open to it and we have done it previously but we are not opposed to having a sole captain.”

Dew said the playing group will vote on their leadership group while the football department will also have an input as to who gets the top position.

Meanwhile, the Suns have announced @Realty as their official coaches partner for the coming five years in a major boost to the club’s financial position going into 2019.
