Then the script got completely flipped in the fourth quarter.
Ross Lyon’s men flicked the switch and came home with a wet sail as they kicked nine unanswered goals to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.
As the Saints drew to within a goal, the game was calling for a hero to emerge ... enter Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.
The star drifted deep inside the forward line and soared onto the shoulders of Bayley Fritsch before slotting the goal to level the scores up with only eight seconds left on the clock.
Then chaos unfolded. As the ball went back to the centre square Melbourne were pinged for a 6-6-6 infringement.
As the umpires attempted to get everybody set up before giving the free kick to the Saints, Wanganeen-Milera plotted with Rowan Marshall.
Marshall took the ball and instantly kicked the ball towards the 50m arc as Wanganeen-Milera burst forward to take the diving mark.
With the scores tied and the game on his boot, he made no mistake as he slotted his second goal and wrapped up the history-making comeback.
