Richmond’s Marlion Pickett charged, arrested over alleged burglaries

A Richmond Tigers premiership player will face court in Perth after he was arrested and charged over alleged burglary offences.

AFL premiership player Marlion Pickett has been arrested and charged in Perth over a series of alleged burglaries.

Pickett, who plays for the Richmond Tigers, was arrested and charged in relation to alleged aggravated burglary, stealing and criminal damage offences, targeting commercial properties, in Western Australia last December and January.

Pickett played in Richmond’s 15-point win over GWS at Optus Stadium on Saturday night and was arrested in the aftermath of the game.

He has been remanded in custody and will face court in Perth on Monday.

The Tigers said in a statement: “Richmond Football Club player Marlion Pickett has been remanded in custody on alleged burglary charges and will attend Perth Magistrates Court for a bail hearing.

“The alleged offences occurred in December 2022 and January 2023.

“The Club will continue to support Marlion and his family while these matters are dealt with.

“As this matter is now before the courts, the Club will not be making any further comment.”

Pickett’s manager Anthony Van Der Wielen said in a statement: “In response to the allegations, Marlion has a strong intent to defend himself against the charges.

“Due to the ongoing legal nature of the proceedings, Marlion, or myself will not be able to provide any further details … comment or clarification about the matter at this stage.

“We understand and respect the public’s interest in this matter, but we also implore all to respect the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, and to allow the legal proceedings to follow their due course without prejudice.”

Pickett, 31, is a two-time premiership player, having played in Richmond’s winning Grand Finals in 2019 and 2020.

The 31-year-old was picked up by the Tigers in the 2019 midseason draft and made his AFL debut in the Grand Final.
