Port Adelaide wingman Xavier Duursma has officially requested a trade to Essendon in a move that could help the Power secure full back Brandon Zerk-Thatcher.

As revealed by this masthead on Thursday, the Power wingman was keen to move back to Victoria and seek a new start at the Dons.

The Power have stated a deal for Durrsma and a move to secure Zerk-Thatcher does not have to be linked but the move for the wingman will give the Power more trade collateral.

Port Adelaide has made clear Ollie Wines is a required player at the Power as the club traded its future first-round pick to offer Geelong an early-20s selection for key back Esava Ratugolea.

Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies admitted the club had its hands full attempting to secure Essendon’s Zerk-Thatcher, Geelong’s Ratugolea and Western Bulldogs ruckman Jordon Sweet.

The Power are keen to secure Richmond ruckman Ivan Soldo but Tigers list boss Blair Hartley stated point blank on Monday his club would not be releasing the contracted 27-year-old tall.

The Power handed its future first-round pick to Fremantle in exchange for this year’s No. 23 national draft pick and the Dockers’ future second-round selection.

It means the Cats are likely to be offered pick 23 by the Power, even though that selection could end up closer to 30 by the time free agency compensation and father-son picks are taken.

The Power might have to trade back into the first round next year or ask for special dispensation after using only one first-rounder on a player (Josh Sinn) in from the 2020-2023 national drafts.

Davies said the club had spoken with Duursma about his season and improving in 2024 but had not told him he should explore his options.

“If a player ends up wanting to move from our club then we have got a decision to make,” Davies said.

“We had a conversation with Xavier at the end of the year to align our expectations of him and also his position in the club. But from there it’s a discussion for the player.

“Does his perspective align with ours and if not there will be a discussion down the track.”

The Dons denied on Monday they had asked for a first-round pick for Zerk-Thatcher but privately they believe he is worth the same compensation as Ratugolea.

Davies said on Monday the club had not had any conversations with Wines about a trade even though rivals believe he could be gettable.

Essendon on Monday made clear he was not a player they were chasing.

“There wasn’t anything in his exit interview that suggests he wants to leave Port Adelaide and from our perspective nor do we want him to leave Port Adelaide,” Davies said of Wines.

“It’s about getting Ollie back to the form he has been in previously. He had an interrupted pre-season and with a better pre-season he will be a far better player for us.

“I am mindful of being categoric in a competition where it’s really hard to be but I could not be more forceful in the fact Ollie doesn’t want to go anywhere and we don’t want to lose Ollie.”

GWS WON’T RUSH FANTASIA MOVE

Greater Western Sydney won’t rush any move on Port Adelaide forward Orazio Fantasia as it also eyes contracted Crow Elliott Himmelberg.

Giants recruiting manager Adrian Caruso said Fantasia - who is out of contract at Port Adelaide after playing just three senior games this year - toured the club last week and met with Giants coach Adam Kingsley which Caruso said “was great”.

“We’re looking at Orazio along with a few other guys as a potential rookie, so we’ll just do our work,” he said.

“We don’t know where it’s going to land, but given it’s a possible rookie, we’ve got time on our side. We’ll just do our due diligence and we’ve got a few weeks to make that call before the rookie draft in mid-November.”

Contracted Crow Elliott Himmelberg could reunite with brother Harry at the Giants, with a trade needing to be facilitated out of Adelaide for the 25-year-old Caruso sees as “a key forward-ruck” that will add flexibility.

“He’s indicated that he’d like to get a trade to the Giants, but we understand that he’s contracted and that’s something that we’ll just have to work through with the Crows over the next week and a half,” he said.

“It’s hard to really say whether we’re going to have to go over and above, other than to say that we would love to bring Elliott in.”

Adelaide remains hopeful of retaining the tall.

Caruso said the club was unlikely to let go of pick six as negotiations ramp up.

And he is adamant that Nick Haynes - who was named as sub four times before being left out of the Giants’ finals line-ups - will remain at the club.

“Nick’s contracted for next year … we’ve heard nothing from him or his manager about him wanting to leave. Unless anything changes, he’ll be playing next year for the Giants,” he said.
