'One f***ing job': GWS coach blows up at costly blunder

GWS Giants coach Adam Kingsley was absolutely fuming when his team committed a rare rule breach that arguably cost his side a chance to win the Sydney AFL derby.

The Giants and Sydney Swans were evenly matched at an overcast SCG on Saturday afternoon before the heavens opened in the second quarter, turning the clash into a scrappy affair.

GWS lost gun midfielder Tom Green to a foot injury, while Sydney key defender Tom McCartin was concussed from a hit by Giants forward Callum Brown that is sure to come under scrutiny from the Match Review Officer.

Both Green and McCartin were substituted out of the game in the first half in a fixture the home side would win 14.14 (98) to 10.9 (69).

The Swans took control of the contest in the third term as ruckman Brodie Grundy continued his love affair with his new home ground.

The Giants and Swans had kicked three goals each in the third quarter before GWS were penalised late on for a 6-6-6 rule breach.

At a centre bounce after Brent Daniels kicked a goal for GWS, the Giants didn’t have a wingman next to the centre square — and mistakenly had seven players in their forward 50.

Youngster Darcy Jones, who impressed on debut last week with his eye-catching speed along with a distinct orange and charcoal helmet, realised the error and rushed up to the wing.

But the umpire had given the Giants a warning and penalised them, giving Grundy a free kick in the middle.

“Free kick Sydney, starting positions,” the umpire explained.

He booted the ball inside Sydney’s forward 50 and Tom Papley snapped a goal out of a congested pack scrambling on the ground.

“Thirty four seconds. It would be a killer if the Swans were able to register (a goal),” Fox Footy’s Mark Howard said.

“Heartbreaker for the Giants. Free kick in the middle and it’s Papley out of the pack.

There was just over 30 seconds left on the clock at the time of the infringement and Kingsley was absolutely furious on the bench.

He appeared to scream at his staff on the sidelines: “One f***ing job.”

Leigh Montagna said: “Adam Kingsley not happy. I read his lips then. He said ‘one job’ for someone to make sure the players were in the right spots.”

The 6-6-6 rule — where a third of the team must be inside forward 50, defensive 50 and the middle at the time of a centre bounce — was introduced in 2019 in a bid to open up the game and make play more freeflowing after a goal is scored.

Will Hayward did his contract negotiations no harm with a superb four-goal outing, while Grundy, Errol Gulden, Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney were among Sydney’s best.

Gulden was awarded the Brett Kirk Medal, judged to be the best player on the ground.

The Swans ran away with the game in the final term in a result that moves them a game clear of the Giants and consolidates second spot on the AFL ladder behind the undefeated Geelong midway through Round 8.
