Luke Sayers is gone from Carlton but the mystery of the great “dick pic” saga remains unsolved.
Who was it that “compromised” Sayers’ social media account and why?
Did the former PwC Australia boss come good on his pledge to report the “hacking” to Victoria Police?
And was the appendage in the posting on January 8 indeed his?
Technically, it is legitimate for the AFL to say that Sayers had not breached any AFL rules in finding that he was not responsible for the post.
But in reality, after Bupa – a major club sponsor – and one of its most senior female executives had been publicly humiliated by the saga, Sayers had no choice but to resign. It was only a matter of when.
A week of silence from the AFL and Carlton before the league begrudgingly confirmed that its integrity unit was investigating was really all about facilitating the exit of one of football’s most powerful figures.
It’s a fair bet that AFL integrity unit investigators and the league’s top brass now know exactly who it was that gained access to Sayers’ account, but – given his decision to walk away from the game – now consider it a private matter for him to work out.
An outcome of convenience for everyone.
“Teflon Luke” was able to ride out a national tax scandal, but not even he could survive this sordid mess.
