The resurrection of Eddie McGuire’s radio career officially begins on Easter Monday.

And there are some industry figures who believe it is the beginning of a grand plan that could land McGuire in the hottest radio seat in Melbourne.

The former Collingwood president will step back behind the microphone with 3AW on Monday for Geelong’s traditional clash with Hawthorn.

He will call the game alongside Bruce Eva with Magpies premiership captain Tony Shaw and Richmond legend Matthew Richardson in the special comments chairs.

McGuire is scheduled to call a handful of games this season as he reinvents himself as a serious media player.

He most recently commentated on games with Fox Footy in 2021 before stepping away from the network after a decade as prime-time host and play-by-play caller.

McGuire, 58, made his name calling footy on Triple M where he helped turn the rock music station into an AFL broadcasting giant.

The man once dubbed Eddie Everywhere has recently talked about how excited he was to get back to the media full time.

This season he is hosting the Wednesday night edition of Footy Classified on Nine while also doing a podcast with Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel.

The podcast is promoted as setting the football agenda, released every Monday and is essentially a vehicle for McGuire to get his opinion out on all AFL issues.

Establishing a footing at 3AW – which is run by his former network Nine Entertainment where he was once the CEO – is seen by some observers as a bigger picture move.

It’s no secret in the industry that the prized role McGuire has his eyes on is Neil Mitchell’s 3AW Mornings seat.

Mitchell’s show is the dominant morning radio program in Melbourne and his contract expires this year although the 71-year-old is yet to reveal whether he’s even considering retirement.

He has joked previously about McGuire eyeing his job and has used the former Triple M Breakfast Show host as a regular guest on the show.

Drive host Tom Elliott, who is the other logical candidate for the gig, is filling in for Mitchell this week with McGuire appearing on the show on Thursday,

There wouldn’t be many better qualified to talk about all things Melbourne and being on the 3AW books – officially from Easter Monday – is a good place to start for the next coming of Eddie McGuire.
