Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has reportedly taken a key step towards reviving his fledgling AFL career after taking indefinite leave.

'You lay down, you got to come for HIA'

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has reportedly checked himself into a health retreat in a key step towards reviving his AFL career.

It comes amid Ugle-Hagan’s indefinite leave of absence from the club to deal with his personal issues.

The Herald Sun’s Jay Clark and Lauren Wood reported on Monday that Ugle-Hagan, almost two weeks into said leave, ventured to an interstate retreat in a bid to eventually get back playing.

Per the report, the trip is considered ‘an important and positive step’ in dealing with the issues that have burdened him in his fifth AFL season.

The report also says: ‘The Dogs and league officials are adamant Ugle-Hagan needs to prioritise his health before he can return to the club.’

But it adds there is ‘significant optimism’ the situation could improve given his step in the right direction, with his teammates in particular thought to be encouraged by the move.

Prior to officially taking leave in late April, Ugle-Hagan had been on a modified training program and appeared at the club infrequently.

“Jamarra’s health and wellbeing remains the absolute priority, and he will be given whatever time he needs,” Dogs football boss Sam Power said in a club statement on April 30.

“We will continue to support Jamarra throughout this period.”

Since being drafted first overall by the Bulldogs in the 2020 national draft, the 23-year-old has played 67 games in four seasons.

During Fox Footy’s Super Saturday Live coverage last week, Clark remarked that the Bulldogs would “be open to some sort of deal” to send Ugle-Hagan — who is contracted through the 2026 season — to a rival club at year’s end.

Clark previously linked the Sydney Swans as a potential suitor.

“I’m not convinced he (Ugle-Hagan) is staying at the Western Bulldogs, and Sydney, for mine, is the club that’s in the box seat. He spends a lot of time up there,” Clark told Fox Footy’s First Crack in late March.
