THE Suns will use their academy heartland to try and square the ledger in the 2019 QW Winter Series against the Lions this weekend.
Gold Coast’s rivals Brisbane already hold a one-game lead in the three-game series following 4.7 (31) to 2.3 (15) win over the Suns at Metricon Stadium on May 25.
The Lions will have to find a way to win on Saturday in Mackay to seal the series, a region that has become a breeding ground for Suns talent since their creation a decade ago and the beginning of their academy system.

Suns football manager Fiona McLarty said they hoped to inspire even more men and women to take up the game while putting on a show.
“Both from a Women’s Program and greater Club perspective, we’re looking forward to the opportunity to play at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay,” McLarty said.
“Being able to showcase our sport through events like this assists us in our commitment to inspire the next generation of footballers across Queensland.
“We’re proud of the strong relationship that we will continue to grow with the Mackay region as a talent pathway and a passionate football community.”
Kath Newman, AFL Queensland State Female Talent Manager, said the QW Winter Series provides high quality, competitive match experiences for Queensland’s two AFLW teams at AFLW quality venues.
“It is the role of AFL Queensland to provide pathways for all players with aspirations to play AFLW,” Newman said.
SUNS MID-SEASON DRAFTEE’S SCINTILLATING FORM
“Together with the state Under 18 Academy Program and the Queensland Emerging Talent team, the QW Winter series is another platform on which potential AFLW players can showcase their talent.
“The QW Winter Series allows the Lions and the SUNS AFLW teams to trial draft eligible players for the 2020 season and see how they fit into their team environment.”
The final match will be held as a stand alone fixture at the Gabba on Saturday 13 July, ahead of the Queensland v WA Representative Match at Optus Stadium, Perth on Saturday 20 July.
