Gold Coast Suns midfielder Anthony Miles opens up about his pre-season injury

“I looked down and saw the hole in my chest and immediately knew something wasn’t right.” Suns midfielder Anthony Miles has opened up about the “freak accident” that has marred the start of his 2020 campaign and ruled him out for half the season.

“I looked down and saw the hole in my chest and immediately knew something wasn’t right.”

Suns midfielder Anthony Miles has opened up about the “freak accident” that has marred the start of his 2020 campaign and ruled him out for half the season.

Miles was benchpressing 110kg in the gym at the start of February when his right pectoral tore off the bone.

“Benchpressing is something I have done probably 3000 times before,” Miles said.

“Because of my ankle I missed quite a bit of the pre-season and getting stronger through my upper body was one of the main focuses.

“I had done 110kg fairly regularly over the weeks leading into it and it’s just one of those freak accidents.

“It just gave way and I pretty much knew straight away something was wrong. The first rep felt really good and the second came down and when I went to push it up it happened.

“I never had any tightness leading into it, no soreness in the pec or anything.”

Suns teammate Nick Holman and rehab coach David Bailey were on hand to catch the bar before it fell on Miles.

Miles had surgery to reattach the muscle to the bone last week and hopes to be back after the club’s Round 14 bye.

It’s a frustrating setback for Miles who played 17 games, the most in three seasons, in his first season at Gold Coast in 2019.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s really frustrating,” Miles said.

“Towards the back end of last year I started to get some continuity in my footy again and I was playing some reasonably consistent footy.

“I have been pretty fortunate through my career. This is my 10th pre-season and it’s the first I have missed.

“I haven’t really missed a significant chunk of footy either, so despite being in AFL for a while it’s new territory and a new challenge.

“With such a young list it provides other opportunities for me too. I’m looking forward to trying to get back as quickly as I can but still contribute to the team in a way.”
