“WE haven’t had anything like it.”

SAM Day is one of only three foundation Suns players left at Gold Coast, along with co-captain David Swallow and Rory Thompson, and the forward has made a declaration that will have every fan hoping 2020 is the year the club turns it all around.

Ten years into the Suns AFL journey and a flash of hope in 2014 is previously the only glimpse at could have been a history-making finals berth.

Gold Coast sat in third after round 10 with seven wins, two losses and a bye but a shoulder injury to then captain Gary Ablett in Round 16 against Collingwood, it fell to pieces, with the Suns ultimately finishing 12th.

Day said Gold Coast were playing a brand of football that eclipsed that period in a sign the Suns could eye finals for the first time.

“There are shades of what it was like at the start of 2014,” Day said.

“In terms of the playing group and everyone being so galvanised, there hasn’t been a time at the club where everyone has been so tight knit.

“I’m not sure it has come about because of the situation we are in but it’s just a great group of guys to be around.

“The environment at the club with the staff and coaches is really good. At the moment I don’t think we have had anything like it which is really exciting.

AFL SCHOOLS CUP: Is it on or off?

“We can see a real consistency coming out in our game. We are playing for four full quarters.

“The quality of the football, as a forward, you can definitely tell we are playing an exciting quick brand of footy.

“It’s coming in cleaner and nicer.”

Gold Coast also have one major advantage over the team of 2014, they no longer rely on a figure like Ablett to win games.

“The way the guys are playing, not only at AFL level but the reserves team has had some really convincing wins on the weekends as well,” Day said.

“The whole of the club is pushing forward for the same goal.

“At the moment, the way we are training during the week and how both teams are performing on the weekend, we are really striving and working towards a common goal.

“Whenever everyone is on the same page, that drives you towards success.

“Over the last four or five years you would be hard pressed to find a side that has been successful or played in a grand final where the whole club hasn’t been firing throughout the year. That is what we have been building towards and making sure we can make a consistent thing.”
