Gold Coast Suns continue to turn NEAFL season around with win over Aspley

Suns NEAFL coach Nick Malceski says team has started to turn their season around on the back of improved cohesion as they go into the bye week placed in the top six.

SUNS NEAFL coach Nick Malceski says team has started to turn their season around on the back of improved cohesion as they go into the bye week placed in the top six.

Gold Coast began the season 0-4 but have now won back-to-back games, the latest a 13.11 (89) to 8.12 (60) over Aspley at Voxson Oval on Saturday.

“The last couple of weeks we have started to turn it around a little bit,” Malceski said.

“It looks like the guys are gelling a little better and we tried to keep the same academy kids in this week.

“Aspley are good at their ground, they play a really good brand there.

“It is very windy there, it doesn’t die down.

“We were happy with our boys. We executed what we wanted for I’d say around three quarters.

“The second quarter hurt us a bit, when they were kicking with the wind we didn’t adjust to the conditions but we were able to in the last when we were going with it.

“We got back to the contest again. The boys wanted the same things going into this week, to keep it really simple and make it all about the contest.”

Ben King kicked three goals for the Gold Coast Suns NEAFL team against Aspley.

Ben King kicked three goals while Sam Day, Hewago Paul Oea and Josh Gore slotted two each to go with Will Brodie’s 34 disposal performance.

“Ben is contesting really well,” Malceski said.

“Him and Daysy have been really solid for us up forward, they are predictable with where they want the ball. All the boys played pretty well.

“They played their role for the team, that is all we expect from them each week.”

VETERAN’S STUNNING ADMISSION OVER AFL FUTURE

Former Richmond player Corey Ellis returned from an ankle injury to play for the Suns reserves, recording 10 disposals off halfback and wings he searches for fitness.

“He started at halfback and only played just under 80 minutes,” Malceski said.

“Previously we have started him on the wing and in our practice game against Palm beach he got a fair bit of it there.

“He had a quieter game but it was his first one back in a while so he will build and keep improving each game.”
