Gold Coast Suns captain Jarrod Witts says fans have reason to believe

Suns captain Jarrod Witts has told fans Gold Coast will start working their way up the ladder next season, declaring they will return better and stronger after another bleak season.

SUNS captain Jarrod Witts has told fans Gold Coast will start working their way up the ladder next season, declaring they will return better and stronger after another bleak season.

Gold Coast ended their 2019 season with a 20.7 (127) to 7.13 (55) loss to finals-bound GWS on Saturday in front of 7610 spectators at Metricon Stadium.

The game was pegged by the Suns as a ‘thank you round’ to supporters but were made to rue a second-half slump, inaccuracy while kicking for goal and poor skill errors that led to turnovers.

Gold Coast finished with the wooden spoon for the first time since their inaugural year in the AFL in 2011 with three wins 19 losses, 18 of them in a row.

But Witts remains confident the turnaround Gold Coast have been working towards is around the corner.

“We are so appreciative of the support we get from the members and fans,” Witts said.

“Both as players coaches and admin staff, it goes such a long way at our footy club.

“I also want the members to know we will be back better and stronger.

“We have had a lot of things to learn this year.

“There are some guys who have had career best years and they will build on that moving forward, the signs are good.

“We have a good core group staying here for a long time so we were really looking forward to building and working our way up the ladder next year.”

Gold Coast were competitive for the majority of the first three quarters but were made to pay for missing shots at goal and turnovers.

“They are a quality team and ran over the top of us a bit,” Witts said.

“We were cracking in a fair bit in the first half around the ball but they got on top of us and really made us pay.

“They put scoreboard pressure on and it was too much for us.”
