Former Brisbane Lions player Mitch Robinson has shared sad health news after causing a furore with a public swipe at his old club.

Former AFL star goes on attack after security incident

Former Brisbane Lions star Mitch Robinson has shared a sad health update about his brain when moving to explain the public swipe he took at his former AFL club on Saturday night.

Robinson caused a furore when claiming on Twitter he had been “denied entry” to the Lions’ rooms following their elimination final win over Carlton at the Gabba.

He also described the football club as a “fake family” and said he will “never go to a Lions game again”.

The 35-year-old on Sunday deleted the tweet.

The Lions also communicated Robinson was denied entry to the Lions’ inner sanctum by Gabba security staff because he did not have the required accreditation.

According to the football club, Robinson was issued an accreditation pass by a member of the footy department when it became known he had not been let through.

Robinson is understood to have turned down the offer when a group of friends he was with was denied entry.

Robinson on Monday addressed the incident in his latest YouTube vlog where he gave security staff at the venue both barrels while also appearing to blame the situation on a “miscommunication”.

“Let’s address the elephant in the room,” Robinson said in the video shared on his YouTube page.

“Now if you know me if I’m passionate about something I will state my mind. So the first thing everyone’s asking is why did I take down the post? Well I was sitting on it for about an hour and reading through some of the comments and they were pretty negative towards the club and to be honest it’s not the whole club that’s a problem.

“Especially after being sent some articles by some journos not doing their job and not doing any research.”

Robinson said he has spoken with a member of the football club after his tweet made headlines around the country, confirming he had been offered a “wristband” that would have allowed him inside the dressing room.

“To be honest I did speak directly to club about getting some wrist bands to go and see the boys after the game to celebrate a win or a loss, to take my family down there and go and spend some time with the boys.

“Benefit of the doubt there was some miscommunication around that and I addressed that this morning when I spoke to someone from the club.”

He also said he was pissed off with how security staff handled the situation.

“Understand that it wasn’t just a miscommunication, the security guards there were absolutely rude,” he said.

“They’re doing a job and being ‘f***wits about it. I simply asked if I could go down to a club representative to get one of the wrist bands and come back up and then take the family down.

“If any Lions supporters were there they would have seen how bad they act. That kind of pissed me off in that sense.”

The most striking claim in Robinson’s deleted post centred around feeling neglected despite what he described as “bleeding for a club for eight years, copping copious amounts of head knocks and staples in my face”.

In the video released on Sunday night, Robinson revealed brain scans recently detected seven “white matter spots” or white matter abnormalities that show potential for traumatic brain injuries he has suffered.

He said last year he has had eight concussions in his 14-year career as a footballer.

“There’s been some positives to come from the post. I’ve been hit up by some past players, not just of the Brisbane Lions, but other players who feel like they’ve been neglected after they’ve finished their careers,” he said.

“You just feel like you don’t matter to the club when you’ve given so much to the club. I know it’s not about me feeling entitled or deserving that I want to go down there. But it’s the feeling that I’m so passionate about the club and I love those boys and I’m still really good friends with a lot of them.

“But in the post I did mention that I’d had a lot of long-term effects from football. Yes, I did get a brain scan and I had seven white matter spots.

“During my career obviously I’ve had a lot of concussions and I don’t blame anyone.

“I knew exactly what I was getting into when I sign up to play footy. But that is the reason I haven’t been playing much footy this year and why I’m not continuing with boxing.

“It’s sad, but that’s the way it is. That’s the sport you play. There’s long term effects from getting these head knocks. But it is what it is.

“It could have been handled a lot better. But I am super happy the boys got a massive win. And they’re onto the next one. I do hope they go well deep into September, but I stand by the last post I made. I don’t think I’ll be going to another game.”

The Brisbane Lions did not wish to comment on Robinson’s video.

The Lions will travel to face the Giants at Engie Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday night.
