Delisted free agents: Levi Casboult, Trent Dumont and Charlie Constable among those hoping for another AFL shot

Talented mark clunking tall forwards are hard to come by, could Levi Casboult be the answer to many club’s forward woes? We assess the best delisted talents.

AFL stars act on climate change

Geelong has already won the race for ex-Crow and Tiger Tyson Stengle, while premier Melbourne signed former Saint Luke Dunstan, who wasn’t technically a delisted free agent.

Not many of the cut crew will get a second or even third chance, but history tells us some will – and might even become an important cog.

Here are 10 delisted free agents who could get another shot.

Levi Casboult (Carlton)

The big fella kicked 156 goals in 154 matches for the Blues but was surplus to demands by year’s end. What makes the 199cm Casboult appealing is he can play at both ends and soak up minutes in the ruck. Both Queensland clubs considered him, but it’s Gold Coast that is set to add him in the rookie draft.

Brayden Sier (Collingwood)

There’s a what-might-have-been feel about Sier’s career. Finally established himself in the Pies’ senior line-up in 2018, including playing in the grand final, but the inside midfielder’s football life unravelled for various reasons. There was the recruitment of Dayne Beams, but also his comical and infamous decision to play domestic basketball while injured under the ‘Phil Inn’ moniker.

Charlie Constable (Geelong)

What more can the kid do? Averaged 33 disposals in nine VFL games this year, along with 14 contested possessions and seven clearances. Constable also hasn’t looked out of place in his 12 AFL appearances, but it’s a tough market for inside midfielders at the moment. The 22-year-old deserves another shot at the big time.

Ollie Hanrahan (Hawthorn)

Once pigeonholed as a small forward, Hanrahan put his speed to use in a new midfield role at second-tier level this year. Averaged 31 disposals, 12 contested possessions, seven clearances and more than a goal a game in the VFL. Gold Coast, Carlton and Geelong inquired about him, but the Blues’ last list spot will be used at the national draft. St Kilda’s also shown interest.

Marty Hore (Melbourne)

Played 14 senior games in defence for the Demons in 2019, but none since because of a series of serious injuries. Toe and quad setbacks ruined last year for him before he ruptured the ACL in his left knee in a training incident in January. Assuming Hore, 25, can get his body right, another club might see value in the former VFL Magpie.

Trent Dumont (North Melbourne)

From finishing in the top five of the Roos’ best and fairest award in 2018-19 to the scrap heap. A calf injury held Dumont back this year but he recovered to play the final 14 matches. Capable of playing on the wing or in the centre and can latch onto the best opposition on-ballers as a tagger. Dumont’s veteran teammate Shaun Atley might have more to give, too.

Richmond father-son pick Patrick Naish will hope another club needs a running machine after the Tigers cut him loose. Picture: AAP

Patrick Naish (Richmond)

The Tigers cut Naish in August and he’s spoken to several clubs since. Sees himself best suited on a wing or a flank at either end, given his contested ball winning is not a strength. But Naish – a hard runner with good kicking skills – has no trouble finding the Sherrin, averaging almost 29 disposals in the VFL this year. Could he rejoin Craig McRae at Collingwood?

Jack Lonie (St Kilda)

There’s been no shortage of rival club interest in previous seasons but Lonie stuck with the Saints for 87 games before being delisted this year. The trick for him might be convincing a new team he can again be the tackling machine he was in 2017. Lonie is dangerous in front of goal at his best and will hope to get a fresh start to prove just that.

Matt Ling (Sydney Swans)

It’s been one injury after another for the No. 14 pick in the 2017 draft. Ling was supposed to be a key piece in the Swans’ uprising with his blistering speed and kicking skills but played only four games in as many seasons. Might be the perfect rebuilding project for a club if they think they can get him fit and realise his potential.

Jarrod Brander (West Coast)

Another first-round draftee from 2017 on the hunt for a new team. Brander showed some nice glimpses at the Eagles but wasn’t able to string enough good performances together. Was used as a 196cm wingman at West Coast, but thinks his best football is as a second or third tall at either end. Could he end up at Geelong or Hawthorn?
