Hawthorn and Carlton coaching legend David Parkin remembers the joy in the faces of his children when they discovered their favourite Blues’ stars in packets of trading cards.

It’s that joy that has motivated the four-time premiership coach to lend his autograph to what is set to be the most sought after trading card in AFL history.

Parkin is one of four quadruple-premiership coaching greats to sign a card that some hobby experts are expecting to command more than $10,000, the jewel in the crown of the new Select Supremacy set, which will be released Thursday.

“Both my children collected cards and both became passionate Carlton supporters and certainly got everything (memorabilia) they could,” Parkin told the Herald Sun.

“My grandkids are struggling to keep their loyalty, but we’re still working on it.

“It goes on through the generations. I still sign regularly. I was only at a function — the Don Scott roast they had last Friday at Hawthorn footy club. After that there were seven or eight people who wanted their cards signed. Sam Newman, he was there, Peter McKenna.

“It’s an interest and a hobby for a lot of people, they love it.”

Joining Parkin on the Quad Coaches Signature card are Leigh Matthews, arguably the greatest player of all time, Essendon mastermind Kevin Sheedy and the great Ron Barassi — all four coaching four premiership teams.

“I’m one of four on it and it’s a great looking card and hopefully it’s something collectors will really appreciate,” Parkin said.

At $500 per box, the new Supremacy set won’t come cheap, but Select’s Steve Whitta said it would fill a gap in the market for collectors who are after high-end product comparative to the booming NBA offerings out of the USA.

“This set will have some of the highest-priced cards ever made, with several expected to go for thousands of dollars, meaning collectors will get plenty of bang for their buck if they want to on-sell their cards, or will have stunning pieces of memorabilia to keep and treasure in their personal collections,” Whitta said.

Some of the game’s greatest players from past and present have put their weight behind the set, with the likes of Wayne Carey, Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe, James Hird and Michael Tuck among those to sign cards.

Whitta expects the limited edition to sell out within three weeks of Thursday’s release.
