MT St Patrick College coach Simon Holder said all he had to do was sit back and marvel at his own players who have put the school into the qualifying stages of the AFLQ Schools Cup.
The Murwillumbah-based school beat Maclean High School 1.4 (10) to 0.2 (2) in the grand final to win the junior male division at the Northern Rivers Gala Day on Wednesday.
They came close to doing the double, with their junior female side losing to Linisfarne in their respective grand final.
Holder is in his first year of coaching the team who he said took control of their own destiny.
“It wasn’t difficult to coach the boys because they are all pretty good,” Holder said.
“A lot of them play in various local competitions and certainly know their way around a footy field.

“I was really just there to encourage and support them while letting them do their thing. They did a brilliant job.”

Holder said it was a special win for the school.
“We are a school that provides itself on success in all manner of forms and sport is one thing the college really promotes as a key plank to what we do overall,” Holder said.
“There is always a lot of pride around the school when a team goes away and does well.”
The team will progress through to the Gold Coast qualifying finals, to be held at Ormeau Australian Rules Football Club in the first week of August.
