Brittany Brymer has swapped surf lifesaving for Aussie rules while also balancing four jobs

THE sensation of being chased is nothing new to Australian surf lifesaving representative Brittany Brymer – although tackling is illegal on the sand.

THE sensation of being chased is nothing new to Australian surf lifesaving representative Brittany Brymer – although tackling is illegal on the sand.

An Under-19 beach relay world champion, Brymer was chasing a break from surf lifesaving and after a suggestion from a friend, decided to employ her prolific pace on the Aussie rules field for the Coolangatta Bluebirds.

“One of my friends from the surf club suggested I start playing and I was looking for something new in the off-season so I tried it, and loved it,” she said.

“I was pretty bad and couldn’t kick or handball but I’ve come a long way since then and have grown so much since I started.

“I love the community we have down at the Bluebirds.

“I grew up with rugby league so it took a while to learn the game and I feel like I still make mistakes every game but I love it.”

And although generally unmatched on the track, the 26-year-old admits it has been harder to burn off opponents on the footy field.

“I do try (to use speed) but I don’t know whether I’m that successful,” Brymer said.

“It’s the main attribute of my game and I try to use my speed as much as I can but there are some pretty quick girls on the footy field.

“I think footy has improved my beach sprinting because I can get a bump in during the beach flags now and hold my ground where I used to be quite scared to contact people.

“I love elements of both but I’m definitely better at beach sprinting.

“I love anytime we get to sing the bluebirds team song after a win.”

And as if it wasn’t hard enough to balance Aussie rules training with sprinting, Brymer also manages to hold down four separate jobs and works up to seven days a week.

The Yepoon nipper recently launched her own physiotherapy business called Upside Physiotherapy aimed at working with kids and young adults with physiotherapy.

Brymer also works for the Queensland department of education, a physiotherapy clinic and at a hospital.

“It’s hard to find the balance between training and work but I’m getting there,” she said.

Brymer is hoping to see out the rest of the football season before hopefully travelling around Australia to compete in several interstate races in 2021.

Coolangatta continue their QAFLW season on Saturday against Wilston Grange at home while Bond University plays Maroochydore at home.
