A KEY figure in the Brisbane Lions’ AFL Women’s success has joined the race to coach the Gold Coast Suns’ inaugural team in 2020.

Lions midfield assistant David Lake, who has been with the AFLW side since its birth in 2017, yesterday advised the club he was putting his hand up for the Suns’ top job when they join the league next season.

As a result, the former Morningside Panthers director of football has stepped away from Lions coaching duties during the application process, with fellow assistants Clark Keating and Simon Black to pick up midfield responsibilities in the interim.

There has also been speculation in recent weeks former Adelaide premiership-winning coach Bec Goddard will put her hand up for the role.

A Lions spokesperson said the club fully supported Lake’s decision to go through the process and wished him all the best.
