ALEX Sexton says the club will move on quickly from Tom Lynch’s free agency saga and go forward with players who want to be part of the Suns future.

Sexton said the club will use the upcoming off-season to determine exactly who is committed to the future of Gold Coast in the wake of the team’s 21.17 (143) to 7.5 (47) loss Melbourne in front of 23,072 fans at the MCG on Sunday.

“In our eyes it’s all over and done,” Sexton said after Lynch told his teammates on Thursday he would seek a move to a Melbourne club at the end of the season.

“We move on. You can’t dwell on things like that. That little speed bump through the week didn’t affect the result.”

DEW CONFIDENT SENIOR PLAYERS WILL STAY

Sexton is one of a number of players off contract next season, along with Steven May, David Swallow, Jack Martin, Rory Thompson and Callum Ah Chee.

Asked if the playing group should sit down at the end of the season to determine who wanted to stay at the Suns in the long term, Sexton said the off-season would reveal all.

“It’s about buy-in and who wants to be around,” Sexton said.

“I’m sure we will figure that out through the off-season and preseason. We will continue to build a strong footy club with the players that want to be here and we will move on with those guys.”

The 24-year-old kicked a career-high five goals against Melbourne from just seven kicks to take his season tally to 22.

It wasn’t the setting Sexton would have preferred to reach such a milestone but coach Stuart Dew praised the contribution of the forward who frequented final quarter highlight reels during game reviews at the club.

“I’m pleased for Alex that it happened (on Sunday) at the MCG,” Dew said.

“Ideally we would love a better result for the club but for Alex I think his whole season has been about the footy club and effort.

“Quite often on a Monday morning we have shown Alex’s effort in the last quarter when the scoreboard is either for or against us.”
