More than 20 per cent of AFL Women’s players felt they were more disrespected than not by AFL headquarters, prior to this year’s landmark pay deal.

The players reported in a recent survey their access to club resources could be significantly improved.

AFLW players completed an online survey between January and March this year with each club’s results shared with respective club hierarchy.

The players were surveyed before this year’s Collective Bargaining Agreement was struck where wages and conditions were significantly improved.

Seven per cent of players reported they felt “low respect” from the AFL, with a further 14 per cent noting they felt “more disrespect than not”.

A small portion of players said they felt “extremely low respect” from the league and also their club’s men’s program senior coach.

Only six per cent of players said they felt “extremely high respect” from headquarters, with 28 per cent noting “high respect”.

The workplace culture score that was generated was significantly lower than that of their male counterparts.

Players also noted an inability to find time for a mental break between matches as many balance training commitments, employment, study and care.

Almost one-third of players feel that their football program is beginning to be integrated within the club, “but we have a long way to go”, while 7 per cent of players said they felt the women’s program was not integrated into the wider club at all.

Almost half of players indicated that “our AFLW program is somewhat integrated within the club but some staff still treat it as inferior to the male program”.

Resource availability was also noted by players with 41 per cent of the AFLW cohort of the belief that their access to club equipment and facilities was only “somewhat sufficient”.

Eight per cent deemed it to be not sufficient at all, while almost one quarter of players said availability of club doctors was rated as either somewhat sufficient or not sufficient at all.

100-minute deliberation fails to overturn Cat’s ban

Geelong star Georgie Prespakis will miss the Cats’ next two matches after failing to have her rough conduct ban overturned at a lengthy tribunal hearing on Tuesday night.

After a 100-minute deliberation, the jury determined the 19-year-old’s tackle on St Kilda’s Erin McKinnon last Thursday was unreasonable in the circumstances because there was significant force before the Saint hit the ground.

Prespakis argued that she did not try to injure McKinnon, who sustained a concussion post-match and is expected to miss up to three games, saying she laid a “very standard tackle”.

But the jury, chaired by Renee Enbom KC, agreed with the match review officer’s findings that the incident was careless conduct, high contact and high impact.

“The vision does … clearly capture more than Prespakis falling to the ground with her opponent,” Enbom said.

“There was a higher level of force at the end of the tackle … which we considered to be unreasonable in the circumstances.”

Prespakis said she dropped her knees to bring her taller opponent down at the same time, hoping they fell down together.

She did not feel that she slung, drove, pulled or dumped McKinnon into the ground.

“A strength in my game is my tackling,” said Prespakis, who had the equal ninth-most tackles in the competition after the round.

“I tackle with intent, I’m not out there to hurt anyone.”

The AFL’s counsel, Nick Pane KC, argued Prespakis left McKinnon in a highly vulnerable position by pinning her right arm, ensuring the Saint could not protect herself.

Pane said Prespakis drove McKinnon into the turf with excessive force.

“The tackle was inherently dangerous and had potential to cause even more serious injury,” Pane said.

It is just the third time in competition history that a player has received a two-week ban for a dangerous tackle.

Geelong sits sixth on the ladder with a 3-2 record.

Prespakis will miss the Cats’ games against the Western Bulldogs and Essendon.

Earlier, the tribunal upheld Essendon forward Daria Bannister’s one-game ban for a dangerous tackle on Collingwood’s Steph Chiocci.

Bannister will miss the Bombers’ clash against Brisbane in Queensland on Sunday.
