AFL trade wrap: Latest news on Zac Fisher, Lewis Young, Tyler Brockman, the No.1 pick and Liam Henry

A month ago, Zac Fisher was playing in the VFL. Now, he has significant rival interest. But will the Blues let him go? Here’s the latest trade news.

Zac Fisher could sign a deal of up to five seasons at North Melbourne as the Blues prepare to haggle on an upcoming trade.

Fisher has been in slashing form after being recast as a Blues defender in the past three weeks and still has two seasons on his current contract on a good deal of between $400,000-$500,000.

It means the Roos would have to offer him a long-term deal to twist his arm to move given he will be leaving for opportunities but not on-field success.

Carlton is thrilled with its draft picks from this year — Ollie Hollands, Lachie Cowan, Jaxon Binns (unlucky not to debut despite excellent VFL form) and project tall Harry Lemmey.

So the Blues will be prepared to trade him for a mid-draft pick given Zac Williams will return from an ACL tear and take up that half back position next year.

North Melbourne doesn’t have its own second-round pick but has Adelaide’s second-rounder.

They might offer a third-rounder for Fisher as an ambit claim given their belief is the Blues are happy for him to leave, before the haggling begins.

BLUES NOT INTERESTED IN MOVING YOUNG

Carlton defender Lewis Young will not be part of the trade merry-go-round despite being pushed down the key position pecking order in a competition where clubs are desperate for shutdown defenders.

Carlton has overlooked him in the past month for Caleb Marchbank and the impressive Brodie Kemp, with the newly re-signed Mitch McGovern to return this week against GWS.

But Young, re-signed this year to 2026, is well aware of the issues he needs to improve in his game and is buckled up for the fight of winning his spot back.

The Blues suddenly have envious defensive depth, even if Lachie Plowman will move on in the final season of a heavily back-ended deal.

BROCKMAN LIKELY TO REQUEST TRADE

Hawthorn is bracing for Tyler Brockman to request a trade in the next fortnight despite their strong work helping him and his young family acclimatise to Melbourne life.

Brockman has played 15 games this year as an exciting small forward but was dropped last week.

His likely landing spot is West Coast given Fremantle has plenty of medium and small forwards including Sam Switkowski, Michael Frederick, Lachie Schulz and Sam Sturt.

A recent dinner with Eagles forward Liam Ryan in Melbourne made him realise how much he was missing playing in a city close to his family.

If the Eagles could secure him at a modest cost their forward line would include Jamie Cripps, Liam Ryan (back after hamstring surgery), young small Noah Long, Oscar Allen and Jack Darling.

HOW WILL INJURY IMPACT WINGARD?

Hawthorn is moving forward on talks with injured half forward Chad Wingard after excellent results from his Achilles surgery.

Wingard has been deep in talks with the Hawks in the weeks leading up to his torn Achilles, and the club was keen to see how that surgery went.

The next step for the Hawks is ensuring there are no complications with infection or any other delays which could push a nine-month recovery out to a year.

But it is understood the Hawks do still want to contract the popular Wingard so it would take a change of mind for them not to move ahead on a new deal.

That contract might have more incentives or even be a lesser sum but it will give him the chance to extend his career, with Wingard still only 30 at a Hawks club with so many young players.

REID LIKELY NORTH BOUND DESPITE DEES MEETING

Melbourne’s hopes of securing Harley Reid have plummeted but the Demons still put in their due diligence this week by meeting the Tongala junior star.

The Roos are likely to have the No.1 overall pick, which means Melbourne will now need to trade with North Melbourne, which seems extremely unlikely.

The strong market for Ben McKay - who is averaging 3.8 intercept marks a game - means the industry is now very confident he will depart on a deal sufficient to hand the Roos the No.2 overall draft pick.

It means the Roos could pick up Reid and then key back Daniel Curtin.

But the Demons still met with Reid and given they have the Fremantle pick (No.5 overall) they could still offer up some kind of package to secure Reid.

HENRY TO MAKE CALL AT SEASON’S END

Fremantle’s Liam Henry will make a decision on his future in the days after the round 24 clash against Hawthorn, with every sign pointing to him asking for a trade to a Victorian club.

The Herald Sun revealed in March that Henry was likely Victoria-bound, with the No.9 draft pick putting off all talks with the Dockers and rival clubs until season’s end.

Despite links with the Pies, Collingwood has not made contact about securing him as a wingman.

He has played the best season of his four-year career with 15 games averaging 20 possessions.

But while the Dockers played hard-ball with many of their departing stars last year he is the only real list issue for Fremantle so they would likely agree to a trade.
