Call them the deadline dozen.
After nine days of list managers facing off like western antiheroes and largely keeping their guns holstered, the trades will begin popping off as Wednesday’s 7.30pm deadline approaches.
Heading into the final day, there are 12 players seen as realistic chances to be traded to new clubs, some more realistic than others.
And that deadline day dozen doesn’t include a name that will surely come from nowhere in the final frantic hours, like new Power player Rory Atkins did leading into the blockbuster Dan Houston trade.
Here’s the lowdown on the 12 players waiting to find out their fate on Wednesday.
TRADE NEWS: ALL THE KEY MOVES FROM DAY NINE
TOM BARRASS
West Coast stuffed itself around by letting pick 14 slip last week and surely can’t turn down an offer built around Hawthorn’s future first and second. The Hawks have played this well and should still get their man.
VERDICT: LIKELY
WADE DERKSEN
You can just about put a line through this one. Melbourne made offers that weren’t listened to and only have future picks in hand now to use. Even Derksen’s camp rates this as a one per cent chance of getting done.
VERDICT: UNLIKELY
JAKE STRINGER
Like the boyfriend who has had his clothes thrown out onto the street, it’s hard to see how Stringer goes back to the Bombers after what has been a slow-motion break-up. He wants to go to the Giants, the Giants are happy to have him and the Bombers may even drive him to the airport. Seems this gets done.
VERDICT: LIKELY
DANIEL RIOLI
The Suns will need something back from Richmond’s draft hand as they send picks six and 23 to the Tigers for Rioli. It will get done but Gold Coast is short on picks once it hands over six and 23 and needs points for Leo Lombard. So still a bit of negotiation here.
VERDICT: LIKELY
LUKE PARKER
Sydney wanted a second-rounder for 293-gamer Parker and have held firm despite North Melbourne’s offer of pick 62. Sure, Parker is contracted, but a bit of respect would see this one taken care of.
VERDICT: LIKELY
JACK MACRAE
St Kilda bought itself extra options here by landing picks 32 and 45 from Brisbane in a swap on Tuesday. The initial offer from the Saints was around pick 47, so that could be a sign that they are willing to offer something better. Looks like this one will be tight.
VERDICT: IN LIMBO
CALEB DANIEL
The Bulldogs showed little interest in moving Daniel all week and like a kid with a plate full of brussels sprouts, there is still little appetite. If the Roos stump up pick 25 for him they would be paying overs but it could get the deal done. Don’t have high hopes.
VERDICT: UNLIKELY
BAILEY SMITH
There is a reason why Luke Ball was called up this week about being walked to the draft a whole 14 years ago – history says it doesn’t get to that stage and there are very few examples of it happening since Ball. The Dogs have pick 17 on the table for Smith and a consolation of a future pick would be nice but there is little reason for the Cats to offer that. All expectations were that this one would go the distance and it is running along like Robert de Castella.
VERDICT: LIKELY
MATT KENNEDY
The Bulldogs popped up on Tuesday as the first club to seriously register interest after the Blue was told he could look at his options. A lot to work through to get a deal done but if the Dogs ship out Smith, Macrae and Daniel this one gets more likely.
VERDICT: IN THE AIR
SHAI BOLTON
One of the many deals that could have been done days ago. Sure, Richmond wanted picks 10 and 11 for him but that was never going to happen. Accept 10 and 18 and shake hands.
VERDICT: LIKELY
JAMES PEATLING
Any particular reason why this hasn’t been ticked off yet? Future picks will sort this one out, the haggling over future thirds has pushed it to the last day. Surely the paperwork is in midafternoon.
VERDICT: LIKELY
DEVEN ROBERTSON
Eagles CEO Don Pyke said on Tuesday that his club will “continue to explore the possibility of bringing Deven into the club”. In this draft hand, the Eagles only have picks 12, 26 and 73 and the Lions want current picks for draft points. Makes a deal tricky but Robertson has been on the fringe for a couple of years.
VERDICT: IN LIMBO
NOT EXPECTED TO BE TRADED: Clayton Oliver, Ivan Soldo, Jack Hayes, Denver Grainger-Barras, Lewis Young, Dylan Shiel, Jayden Laverde, Brodie Kemp.
