North Melbourne veteran Todd Goldstein has told the Kangaroos he wants to finish his career at a new club.

The 35-year-old ruckman informed North he would depart Arden Street as an unrestricted free agent on Thursday after a decorated 315-game career spanning 17 seasons.

Goldstein, who holds the records for the most career hit-outs (9837) and most hit-outs in a game (80 against GWS in 2015), said it was “time for a clean break” from the Roos as he anticipated his senior opportunities would be limited in 2024.

Developing ruck Tristan Xerri was prioritised over Goldstein at selection several times during the season as the veteran made a pair of rare appearances in the VFL.

“It’s been a really tough decision – I’ve been talking to my manager and my family about what’s going to be best for us going forward … and I think that’s to look for other opportunities elsewhere,” Goldstein said.

“It’s probably time for the club to have a clean break and give Tristan (Xerri) the opportunity to shine in the number one ruck role.

“I appreciate everything the North Melbourne footy club and all the supporters have given me. They’ve been the greatest supporters I could have asked for.

“I hope for nothing but the best for this footy club and for this group going forward.”

Goldstein was taken at Pick 37 in the 2006 draft, debuting late in the 2008 season.

He won the Syd Barker Medal as North Melbourne’s best and fairest and earnt All-Australian selection in a stunning 2015 season.

Kangaroos football boss Todd Viney said the ruckman would be missed by his teammates and fans.

“Goldy has been a loyal and decorated servant of the club so it’s naturally sad to see him go,” Viney said.

“It’s a credit to him that he has been able to play over 300 games at the one club and it’ll be strange to see him in different colours.

“He’s incredibly popular among our members and supporters and he’s been a great mentor for our young and emerging rucks, especially Tristan Xerri.

“We wish Todd nothing but the best in his future endeavours and he leaves knowing that Flick and his family are welcome back at Arden St any time.”
