AFL Trade 2023: All the latest news and intel ahead of the exchange period

The big offers are coming for Tom Doedee – so what compo pick could the Crows get? Plus, the latest on Harrison Petty, Ivan Soldo, GWS’ search for a tall and more.

Adelaide will be prepared to release contracted key tall Elliott Himmelberg to the Giants if they can secure more key position cover to replace him.

Himmelberg is keen to get to GWS to play alongside his brother Harry, with the Giants considering him as their only trade target in a summer of stability.

But Adelaide is searching for key position defenders given the likely loss of Tom Doedee to an opposition club and Nick Murray’s ACL tear in July.

So the Giants will wait with bated breath as the Crows go searching for key-position insurance, keen to secure Himmelberg.

Lachie Keeffe played an interesting role as a back-up ruck and key forward, but kicked only one goal for the season.

So, as the Giants wait for last year’s No.1 pick Aaron Cadman to mature, Himmelberg would be a handy pick-up.

Doedee compo becomes clearer as Lions, Pies circle

The market for free agency defenders continues to skyrocket with Doedee set to be offered a deal of up to five seasons as Brisbane, Collingwood and Sydney chase the interceptor.

Adelaide is unlikely to match any free agency deal, having pulled its initial deal when Doedee suffered a second ACL tear, then replacing it with a modest offer.

Brisbane is seen to be the favourite ahead of Collingwood, with Sydney a late bidder.

The Crows expect Doedee’s offers to hit five years and as much as $600,000 a season – the same deal Brisbane free agency forward Dan McStay secured to move to the Pies.

Adelaide could receive second round compensation of pick 30 under that contract scenario, given the McStay precedent.

Collingwood is interested in Doedee as a potential replacement for Jeremy Howe, while the Lions see him as a replacement for Marcus Adams and eventually Ryan Lester.

In 2020 and 2021 Doedee averaged 2.8 and 2.9 intercept marks a game, but the Crows were worried about his body after needing surgery for two ACL ruptures.

No SA homecoming for Dees

Melbourne will rebuff Adelaide’s attempts to secure star duo Harry Petty or Tom Sparrow in the Shane McAdam deal.

The Crows are keen on a ready-made quality player in return for McAdam, who turned his back on a fresh deal at Adelaide to join Melbourne in the exchange period.

But the Demons will likely offer the Crows a third-round pick or low-round pick swap in the McAdam deal.

Melbourne’s top priority is to secure adequate compensation in the trade for Brodie Grundy to Sydney, such as a second-round pick.

Soldo going nowhere – for now

Richmond is keen to hold onto Ivan Soldo despite Port Adelaide’s interest in him as a ruckman to play alongside Jordan Sweet.

Soldo battled plantar fascia issues this season but his form was strong playing the last seven games of the year in a row.

The Power has delisted ruckman Brynn Teakle and, while it has offered Scott Lycett another year, footy boss Chris Davies said last week he was banged up and pondering retirement.

That is unlikely, with the Roos, St Kilda, Geelong and Essendon all needing a back-up ruckman.

But Richmond has no intention of releasing Soldo, given it has only young rucks Samson Ryan and Ben Miller under co-captain Todd Nankervis.

He comes out of contract next year but they could still trade him then so aren’t inclined to let him go.

Under new coach Adem Yze, the Tigers will need to get a trade deal done for Hawthorn’s Jacob Koschitzke, who has asked for a trade to Punt Road.
