GREATER Western Sydney’s shock loss to Carlton means we have a new ladder leader after Round 12.
Adelaide is back at the top of the table following a big win against St Kilda.
There are plenty of other changes with Essendon making a big jump.
At the other end of the table, the once-mighty Hawks have dropped to second last.

AFL LADDER AFTER ROUND 12
ADELAIDE 9-0-3 36 PTS
All of those who let them down so badly against Geelong responded the way good players do. Their percentage is worth four points so still thinking home final and top four.
GWS 9-0-3 36 PTS
Have been cobbling together wins despite injury, so at some stage they were ripe for the picking. Patton should be ready to take the game by storm. Instead he is just going.
GEELONG 8-0-3 32 PTS
Parfitt and McCarthy are expected back in early July to provide the much-needed forward line crumbers.
RICHMOND 7-0-4 28 PTS
The feel-good story of the year, but the year is only half gone. And nothing short of at least one final win will now suffice. Luring Casboult across town would help for next year.
PORT ADELAIDE 6-0-5 24 PTS
A week after president Koch eulogised about coach Hinkley, they go and produce that rubbish. So it isn’t just racecourses where you shouldn’t go the early crow.
ESSENDON 6-0-5 24 PTS
Now that’s the Heppell we know. His best game since Rd 1. The role of Bellchambers shouldn’t be overlooked, nor that of Stewart. In fact the latter is starting to show signs of embarrassing the Pies.
WESTERN BULLDOGS 6-0-5 24 PTS
We keep making excuses, such as unsettled line-up etc. But right now they resemble Hawthorn of 2008 and Essendon in 1994, surprise Premiers who struggled the season after.
WEST COAST 6-0-5 24 PTS
Until Monday at least they somehow remain in the eight. As it stands they are losing respect quickly, so no better way to restore it than by thumping the Cats.
FREMANTLE 6-0-5 24 PTS
Fyfe deserves time after a broken leg, but just five contested possessions and three tackles? Plus his midfield mates got surprisingly little of the pill. And then there was that non-existent forward line.
MELBOURNE 5-0-5 20 PTS
A chance to go into the eight against the Pies at the G. Now what more could you ask for, with Gawn, Hogan and Spencer back in the next two weeks? Monday is when the football world finds out about this group.
COLLINGWOOD 5-0-6 20 PTS
They will go in six short of their best but excuses aren’t what the Pies need to be about. The problem is Elliott might be their most valuable player. So what better stage for Fasolo to kick three and make the difference?
ST KILDA 5-0-6 20 PTS
What promised so much has suddenly turned pear-shaped. A goal in each of the first three quarters v the Crows was insipid. Starting to wonder what they stand for.
GOLD COAST 5-0-6 20 PTS
Don’t worry, proud Gazza would have read Wayne Carey’s belief that he doesn’t belong in the top 10 current midfielders. Ainsworth showed some exciting signs and that’s what they need, kids coming through.
SYDNEY 4-0-7 16 PTS
Reckon that disaster against Hawthorn is going to come back to haunt them. Like Plugger before him, is Buddy a better player since joining Sydney? For mine more consistent.
NORTH MELBOURNE 4-0-7 16 PTS
Their ‘reset’ or whatever you bloody call it has brought them time, but not glaring inconsistency. I just can’t get that 3rd quarter against Richmond out of my mind.
CARLTON 4-0-7 16 PTS
If getting your defence right sets you up long term, then in the words of Renee Geyer, they are ‘heading in the right direction’. They keep giving their fans enough to suggest the glory days will return
HAWTHORN 4-0-8 16 PTS
Their youngest side in a decade so they were very gettable. They need to get games into their kids but the query is ‘how many of them are up to AFL standard?’.
BRISBANE 2-0-9 8 PTS
So Andrews is a 10-year defender. Hipwood and Schache want to hang around up forward. And their kids are learning the Fagan way. They might be bottom of the ladder, but would you rather be the Lions, Hawks or Dockers?
